At least once a year (January in the Northern Hemisphere, June in the Southern Hemisphere), Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched, and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that connects to this unique experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally, the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example, around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.

Sundance Film Festival: January 18-28

The Sundance Film Festival, organized by the Sundance Institute, is the largest independent film festival in the United States. Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and the Sundance Resort host. It showcases the work of indie filmmakers. Founded in 1981 by Robert Redford, Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides and preserves the space for artists in film, theatre, and new media to create and thrive. The Institute's signature lab, grant, and mentorship programs develop unique artists throughout the year. The Sundance Film Festival and its public programs connect audiences to artists with new ideas, assist in discovering original voices, and build a community dedicated to independent storytelling. Olympics, Youth Winter (CN): January 19 - February 1

The Youth Winter Olympics, officially known as the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), is an international multi-sport event organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for young athletes aged between 15 and 18 every four years to promote sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and education among the participating youth from around the world. The Winter YOG features competitions in various winter sports disciplines, similar to the senior Winter Olympic Games. The idea for the Youth Olympic Games began with former IOC president Jacques Rogge in 2001 to inspire younger generations to participate in sports and embrace Olympic values. The inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012. The 2024 games will be the fourth edition. The Winter YOG showcases many of the same sports as the senior Winter Olympic Games, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track, curling, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, and more. The Winter YOG also serves as a platform for young athletes to gain experience in international competitions, potentially paving the way for their participation in future senior Olympic Games. In addition to sports competitions, the event features a rich cultural and educational program, the Culture and Education Programme (CEP), designed to foster personal growth, social responsibility, and Olympic values among the athletes.

You can tell a lot about a person from their handwriting. It lays bare insecurities, strengths, personalities, biases, and where they are. Graphology is the study of handwriting; graphologists or graphoanalyst are the people who study it. Writing is individual to the person, and it changes over time. Consider diary entries you made in your teens and checks you wrote in your early twenties. Go back and look at those and see how your writing has changed. Increasingly with texting and computers, handwriting, especially cursive, is becoming a lost art. Some schools don't even teach cursive writing, which is a shame. It disadvantages students, especially in higher education or a business atmosphere. One writes two to three times faster in cursive than in printing. International Handwriting Analysis Week is your opportunity to learn what your writing says about you, play with your signature and appreciate the written word. HUD requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens on a single night.
