Ice Cream Cone Day (1903): December 15

Ice Cream Cone Day celebrates the edible and portable summer treat. The first edible cone for ice cream was created in 1904 by Ernest Hamwi at the St. Louis World's Fair. The Syrian immigrant had his zalabis (Syrian Waffle) booth at the fair adjacent to the ice cream vendor. When his neighbor ran out of dishes to serve the ice cream, Hamwi displayed brilliance, rolled a waffle into a cone, and put ice cream in it. And thus, a legendary treat was born! There were other edible dishes for ice cream. That honor goes to Italo Marchiony, an Italian immigrant who created mini dishes from pastry to make ice cream a portable street food in 1896. He filed his patent for the ice cream cuplets on September 22, 1903, and received a patent on December 15, 1903. This day falls on the anniversary of that patent. The cone itself, though, was created and popularized by Hamwi. PROMOTION IDEA: The next time you eat an ice cream cone, pause and thank the immigrant who created it. Today, under the current laws, Hamwi would have difficulty immigrating to the United States because he was from Syria. Eating an ice cream cone today in his honor could protest immigration policies. For enterprising NGOs and vendors serving the Syrian refugee community, today is a chance to raise much-needed funds and awareness through the simple yet elegant ice cream cone.

July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.

The idea of covering fruits, nuts, and even nougat with chocolate wasn’t possible until the 19th century. The technology needed to separate chocolate from cocoa butter wouldn’t be invented until 1828 by Conrad Van Houten in today’s Netherlands. Without this process, chocolate could only be used as a spice, much the same way you would use cinnamon or ginger. Fortunately, the process was developed, and different techniques, including conching, invented by Rudolph Lindt in 1879, would eventually lead to that box of chocolates everyone loves to get. South Africa celebrates its Day of Reconciliation on December 16 each year as a national unity day. Accepted as a public holiday in 1995 following the end of the apartheid era in 1994, it marks two anniversaries, one of importance to white South Africans: The December 16, 1864, Voortrekker victory over the Zulu tribes at the Battle of Blood River. And one dear to Black South Africans: The December 16, 1961 founding of the African National Congress' Umkhoto we Sizwe. Today is also known as The Day of the Vow, The Day of the Covenant, or Dingaan's Day. It is the official start of the South African summer and is the first of four major public holidays, including Christmas, Day of Goodwill, and New Year's Day.

Jasmine Uprising, Tunisia, Arab Spring Begins (TN)(2010): December 17

Today is the anniversary of the Jasmine Uprising, the catalyst for the Arab Spring. On this day, a street vendor, twenty-six-year-old Tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi, had enough. Enough corruption. Enough struggle. Enough brutality under one of North Africa’s most heavy-handed dictators, Ben Ali. Enough of everything. In the early hours of the day, young Bouazizi got up, loaded his wheelbarrow with produce, and headed to the market to sell them. On his way, government authorities confiscated his wheelbarrow and sole source of income and proceeded to beat him in public. In his despair, he walked into the middle of the street, poured gasoline over his head, and lit himself on fire. This single act of defiance ignited the imagination of millions across the Arab world and was followed in quick succession with uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Bahrain, and other nations. By February 2011, the brutal dictator would be gone, and Tunisia would be remembered as the spark that ignited much-needed change across the Arab world.
