Indigenous People, Ntl. Day of Mourning (1492): November 28

Today is the indigenous people of America's National Day of Mourning. Organized since 1970 by the Native Americans of New England, it's a day of protest against, and a reminder of, the genocide against them. Between 1492 and 1900, 90% of the Native American population in the United States was wiped out by guns, famine, forced relocation, and disease. The National Day of Mourning coincides with Thanksgiving Day on purpose. For Native Americans, it is a day of mourning, not one of thanks.

Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, celebrates its National Day on November 28, the Proclamation of Independence Day or Restoration of Independence Day. This public holiday commemorates the declaration of independence from Portugal on November 28, 1975.

Decolonization in Timor-Leste began in 1974 when Portugal initiated a series of political reforms and started to withdraw from its overseas colonies. On November 28, 1975, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the country's independence unilaterally. However, just nine days later, on December 7, 1975, Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste and annexed it as its 27th province, leading to a long and bloody struggle for independence. Timor-Leste's battle for independence continued for 24 years, with various resistance movements fighting against Indonesian occupation.

Finally, in 1999, a United Nations-sponsored referendum was held in which most of the population voted for independence. Following a period of United Nations administration, Timor-Leste officially became an independent nation on May 20, 2002. National Day is a significant event in Timor-Leste, marked by various festivities and activities throughout the country. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders.

The day serves as an opportunity for the people of Timor-Leste to express their national pride and unity and honor the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence.

Thanksgiving in the United States falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and it is a national holiday, often spreading over the entire weekend. Thanksgiving celebrations occur in most American households, where the focus is a large feast shared with friends and family. Roast turkey is the usual meat dish, served with mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and cranberry sauce. For Americans without friends or family to feast with, volunteering at local soup kitchens or hosting free dinners for the homeless is a common activity. In New York City, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually and is usually played in the background as the meal is prepared. The President of the United States pardons a turkey, assuring that the turkey can freely roam farmland for the rest of its life. Thanksgiving in the United States was first proclaimed in 1789 by George Washington. Yet it would wait until 1863 to be a national holiday. At the time, President Lincoln decreed it to bring people together during the Civil War. Thanksgiving commemorates the harvest feast, which occurred over three days in October 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, between the Native Americans and pilgrim settlers. Without the help of Native Americans, the pilgrims would not have survived their first winter. In 1939, President Roosevelt fixed Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday in November.

Indie Week, Just a Card (UK): November 25-29

Just a Card Indie Week began in 2016 as a grassroots effort led by artist Sarah Hamilton of London to encourage people to shop their local retailers in the lead-up and through Black Friday. Each year, thousands of small businesses supporting local artisans, shopkeepers, and independent retailers go out of business due to the expansion of the internet and big box retailers. This competition decimates the availability of unique, handmade, and handcrafted gifts. The shift away from boutiques kills jobs and destroys the fabric of communities. It doesn't take much to show your support. Something as small as purchasing a card (thus the name) can keep these unique and precious companies in business. By 2018, over 50,000 businesses across the United Kingdom had signed on to participate. Look for the "Just a Card" campaign sign in the shop window and show your support, even if it is just a simple piece of candy or a paper card. Every purchase keeps these businesses alive.

Many stores and shops in the US open up early and offer severe discounts on goods. It is not uncommon for people to camp outside malls and stores to be the first in line when the store opens. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas can account for up to 60% of a retailer’s annual sales. How well sales go on Black Friday and the weekend often determines how profitable the holiday season will be.

Created by Judith Donath of MIT in 1994, e-cards have evolved from simple messages to rich media images with animation and audio-video effects. E-cards are less expensive than traditional cards and have become a preferred greeting method. E-greetings have significantly cut into the market of traditional greeting cards, but they lack the personal feeling and touch physical cards provide. This day has no specific sponsor and is unofficial.

Traditionally, today represents the optimal day to mail physical Christmas Cards if you want to ensure they arrive before the Christmas holiday.

Friendsgiving: November 29

Popularized by Bailey's Irish Cream in 2011 as part of an advertising campaign, Friendsgiving is a more casual version of the Thanksgiving feast that leaves the family behind and brings friends together. Typically it occurs the day after Thanksgiving but can be any friend-attended dinner party during the holiday season between November 15 and January 1 each year. The origin of this event is an episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey called "Gobblefellas," in which the women competed against each other to host the best Friendsgiving party.
