Mouth Cancer Action Month (UK): November

Mouth Cancer Awareness Month raises awareness of mouth cancer, its causes, and its prevention.

Mouth cancer causes more deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer, or melanomas. Tobacco use is still considered the leading cause of mouth cancer. According to the World Health Organization, up to half of the current smokers will die of a tobacco-related illness, including mouth cancer.

Drinking to excess can increase the risk of mouth cancer by four times. Those who smoke and drink are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer. Mouth cancer is twice more common in men than in women, though an increasing number of women are being diagnosed with the disease. Age is another factor, with people over 40 more likely to be diagnosed, though more young people are now being affected than previously. Poor diet is linked to a third of all cancer cases.

Movember: November

Movember, also known as No Shave November, is a campaign challenging men to grow a mustache and beard during the month to raise awareness of men’s health issues. Sponsored by the Movember Foundation, health issues highlighted include early detection of certain kinds of cancer and depression. First held in 2004, today, it is supported by thousands of organizations worldwide, and the cause is considered one of the top 100 NGOs in the world.

Native American Heritage Month: November

National American Heritage Month celebrates the myriad of contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives to the American nation. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”), have been issued each year since 1994.

No Nuts November: November

No Nuts November is one of those silly events that came about based upon dares, likely from a bunch of drunk college students, sometime around 2011, when it first appeared in the Urban Dictionary.

There are two ways to look at this month.

The G-rated version considers it a month without nuts, no cashews, pecans, or Brazil nuts (peanuts are okay as they are a legume, not a nut).

The X-rated version, and why we are pretty sure a group of drunk men created this event, is No Nuts November challenges men to refrain from anything to do with their ding-a-ling and cherry sacks—the kind they come equipped with, generally at birth.

The objective of No Nuts November is to ignore the eggplant and meatballs sans sauce for thirty days. It’s a rolling joke with men who will ask each other, “Have you failed No Nut November?” Yes, it’s silly. But the guys seem to have fun with this.

Novel Writing Month, Ntl.: November

National Novel Writing Month focuses on the creative way to keep on writing. On the first day of the month, participants begin a 50,000-word novel to pass to the organizers by 11:59 PM on November 30. This event started in July 1999 with only 21 participants, but the number of participants has increased to over 50,000 a year. The first novel is believed to have been written around 2000 BC.

Pecan Month, Ntl. Georgia: November

National Georgia Pecan Month kicks off the holiday season with the fruit most people mistake for a nut. It is an awareness campaign by the Georgia Pecan Commission to bring attention to the crop and its uses.

Personal Story from Laura:

"My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that we had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents were so sneaky about it! Or that I believed them.

We still laugh about that to this day."

So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!

Pet Cancer Awareness Month, Ntl.: November*

National Pet Cancer Awareness Month, sponsored by the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, was first marked in 2005; the month-long awareness campaign focuses on pet cancer, its causes, and its devastating aftermath.

Many pet owners don't know how to care for their pets to help them avoid cancer. Some are well-intentioned, like vegan and vegetarian owners who choose to feed their cats with carrots or legumes, a diet severely detrimental to a carnivore's health and life. Others believe in treating their furry friends with anything from chocolate to too many treats.

November, leading into the indulgent holiday season, is the month set aside to educate pet parents on how best to take care of their pets, from diet and exercise to domicile and environment. National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is one of two pet cancer awareness months, each with different sponsors.
