World Humanitarian Day honors humanitarian aid workers for their work in helping people throughout the world. Its purpose is to increase knowledge of various humanitarian activities and honor those who died pursuing humanitarian causes. Established by the United Nations in December 2008 under the General Assembly A/63/L.49 and observed the following year. August 19 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Iraq, in which 22 people lost their lives, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq.

A full moon occurs when the moon is illuminated by the sun and on the opposite side of the earth. Its ecliptic longitude is 180 degrees. For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.

Narali Purnima (H): August 19

Narali Poornima occurs on the full moon of the month of Shravan (Sawan). Naral is Hindi for "coconut." Offerings of coconuts are made to the sea gods as part of this ritual to mark the beginning of the fishing season to appease anger and assure a good catch. On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent for the Daguerreotype process from Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. His is the invention that made photography possible. Rather than keep it just for the French people, the government gifted it to the world so that all people, no matter where they lived, would have access to photography. This selfless gift of technology is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the patent acquisition as World Photography Day.

Popsicle Day (1924): August 19

Popsicle Day honors the popsicle on the anniversary of patent US 1505592 for a frozen confection on a stick, August 19, 1924. Popsicles are the accidental creation of 11-year-old Frank Epperson. On a cool winter evening, he left a mixture of soda flavoring and water on the porch. The following day, he discovered that the drink had frozen during the night’s low temperature and tasted good. Popsicles became a sensation at a fireman’s ball in 1922, where they were introduced. Epperson sold his pops on the stick at Neptune beach in California in 1923. First named Epsicle (Epperson icicle), this simple frozen flavored water or juice on a wooden stick has become a favorite summer staple worldwide.

Potato Day, Ntl.: August 19

National Potato Day honors the versatile root popular the world over. Potato starch packs more vitamins and minerals than other carbohydrates, including wheat and barley. Because of this and its ease of cultivation, potatoes quickly became a staple of European diets once introduced. Potatoes are native to South America, most notably Bolivia and Peru, and were brought back to Europe by Spanish Conquistadors in 1536. In 1589, Sir Walter Raleigh brought the potato to Ireland. By 1621, potatoes returned to the New World and arrived in North America. The potato was the first organic crop cultivated and grown in space in October 1995. The Inca were the first to cultivate potatoes between 8,000 and 5,000 BC.

Raksha Bandhan (Siblings Day) (H): August 19

Raksha Bandhan can also be called Siblings Day. It is a celebration of sibling love observed on the Purnima of Sawan in the Hindu calendar. Raksha Bandhan is an ancient observance ripe with myth and historical legends. One recounts how the Rajput queens practiced the custom of sending rakhi threads to neighboring rulers as a token of fraternity. This legend is illustrated today by sisters tying a sacred thread, rakhi, on her brother's wrist as a symbol of her love and prayers for her brother's well-being and his lifelong vow to protect her. Happy Bacon Lovers Day. Like so many great things, from sunglasses to pasta, bacon originated in China around 1500BC. By salting pork, the Chinese could preserve it during hot months. The same technique made its way to Europe and eventually America. Bacon is considered an adequate hangover food (ever noticed you seem to crave fatty foods when hungover?), and the choline found in bacon is said to help in fetal brain development. Our favorite bacon recipe at LEEP? Pita chips dipped in classic hummus and dipped again in bacon bits. It's easy, fast, and addictive. Mosquito Day, World (1897): August 20

Mosquitos seem to really like some people, and this writer is one of them. If a mosquito is within fifty feet, I will be bit, multiple times. These little insects form the foundation of several food chains but can also be deadly. World Mosquito Day honors Dr. Ronald Ross of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's discovery of the malaria parasite in a mosquito on August 20, 1897. He received the Nobel Prize for his work in 1902. Currently, 350-500 million cases of Malaria occur worldwide each year, with over 1 million dying from the disease. The American Mosquito Control Association champions World Mosquito Day each year as a public service designed to educate people about the need for mosquito control and what each of us can do to minimize mosquito infestations around our homes and in our communities.

Pecan Pie Day, Ntl. Chocolate: August 20

National Chocolate Pecan Pie is the food celebration. A Thanksgiving and Christmas time table staple, pecan pie was first baked by the French in New Orleans. However, it was Native Americans who first introduced pecans to the French. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that you had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!"

Radio Day, Intl. (1920): August 20

International Radio Day marks the anniversary of 8MK (WWJ) radio Detroit's first broadcast on August 20, 1920. It was what we'd call a 'beta test,' not really for public consumption. But, it was the first. The station would officially go live with the first radio newscast on August 31, 1920. At the time, creating a for-profit business in the newly emerging radio industry was a radical idea. News Radio was officially born! A few months later November 25, 1920, the first live sportscast occurred on WTAW, a college station in central Texas. August 28, 1922, saw the first paid radio commercial on New York's WEAF for apartments in Jackson Heights. However, the first public radio broadcast occurred in New York City on January 13, 1910. Though a historical anniversary, in 2013, Sabrina Roach of Brown Paper Ticket's Doer's Program made an effort to have this day marked internationally. Today, radio stations globally celebrate International Radio Day. The radio itself as an invention occurred through the efforts of multiple people. With its complex transmission and reception methods, different technologies were involved in its development, as were various inventors.
