Created in 2005 by Clive O. Callender, M.D., National Minority Donor Awareness Day increases awareness of the need for more organ/tissue donors, especially from people of color. It occurs on National Minority Donor Awareness Week's first day, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Each year the annual observance reaches out to minorities and focuses on the various fears and obstacles associated with donation. The campaign's goal is to promote healthy living and disease prevention, increase the number of people who sign donor cards, have discussions with their families about their wishes, and become donors. Minority Donor Awareness Day raises awareness of the behaviors that may lead to the need for transplantation, such as smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, and poor nutrition.

Rounds Resounding Day: August 1

While researching her book Rounds Re-Sounding, Gloria T. Delamar found references to several "Catch Clubs" in eighteenth, nineteenth, and even twentieth-century England. They were traditionally for gentlemen who met to sing rounds, catches, and canons. As is often the custom, alcohol played a central part, with separate ladies' nights for female singers. From 1763 to 1794, participants in rounds and catches submitted songs and lyrics to the club to the Warren Collection, a Georgian music publication of record. In 1987, Delamar founded the concept club Rounds Re-Sounding Society and created Rounds Re-Sounding Day. Its purpose is "to sing rounds, catches, and canons in folk contrapuntal tradition." The motto is 'As rounds re-sound and resound, the world joins in a circle of harmony.' Rounds Re-Sounding Day is August 1.

This celebration honors the bond between sisters, whether genetically linked, step, or through shared experience. It's a day to show your sister your appreciation and spend time together if possible. World Wide Web Day occurs on August 1 to mark the anniversary of the creation of the World Wide Web in August 1990. The creator, Tim Berners-Lee of CERN, first proposed the concept of the World Wide Web in 1989. The first proposal for The Web appeared in MacWorld (March 1990), and the first website appeared on August 6, 1991. The founders of the Internet suggested the August 1, 1990 anniversary date. Critical dates in what we know today as the World Wide Web include: 1990: First commercial dial-up ISP 1991: First web page, content-based search, webcams introduced, and MP3 standardized. 1993: First graphic browser (Mosaic) that regular people could use; White House and United Nations go online. 1995: Netscape develops SSL encryption for financial transactions, eBay and Amazon go online; JavaScript is created and the precursor of social media, Geocities launches. 1996: Web-based email (Hotmail) launches. 1997: Netflix is created. 1998: News media breaks its first story online, rather than in traditional media (Clinton/Lewinsky Scandal); Google and Napster launch. 2001: Wikipedia launches. 2002: LinkedIn is launched. 2003: VoIP via Skype is launched, and MySpace goes live. 2004: Web 2.0 was released, allowing social media giants, including Facebook, to be created. 2005: YouTube launches. 2006: Twitter launches. 2007: iPhone is introduced, and the mobile web is created. 2008: Presidential Candidate Ron Paul uses the Internet to raise over $4.4million in a single day. Birth of crowdsourcing. 2010: iPad is introduced, and the application industry takes off. 2012: Netflix launches Lillehammer, its first original program. 2017: In China, Alibaba generated 25.3 billion dollars in online sales on one day (Singles Day) on November 11. For anyone born after 1990, a world before the web must seem like a very primitive thing!

Braham is the homemade pie capitol of Minnesota, and Pie Day is how the state shows off. You'll find baking competitions, a lot of pies, a car show, live music and vendors from all over the state demonstrating products and services. The Braham Pie day draws over 5,000 people annually. Coloring Books aren't just for children. In 1970 National Coloring Book Day championed Dover Publications as a promotion. They published the first-ever coloring book for adults featuring and called "Antique Automobiles." The coloring book studies vintage cars and provides car enthusiasts with hours of relaxation and information. Dover later created books that allowed you to recreate art masterpieces, explore history, and engage in different hobbies. In 2010, they published the first 3D coloring book. National Coloring Book Day encourages children and adults to take a day off and discover the wonder of coloring.

Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day, Intl. (1944): August 2

Established by the European Union Parliament in April 2015, August 2 is International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day. Previously it had been noted on December 16 each year. This day draws attention to the Roma survivors, who struggle with persecution and prejudice in many parts of Europe and America. The Nazi Holocaust targeted various groups of people who the eugenics program designated poison to the race. Those targeted included one-quarter of the global Jewish population, over 75,000 mentally ill and disabled persons, people of color, 2.5 million Catholics and Poles, homosexuals, and the Romani. All those mentioned above were persecuted, interned, and killed. Romani, sometimes called Gypsies, Travelers, or Roma, like the Jewish population of Europe, lost 25% of their global population, amounting to 550,000 people. And yet, they are rarely mentioned. The Roma were singled out beginning December 16, 1942, when Gestapo commander Heinrich Himmler ordered the relocation of all Romani in European countries to the “family camp” of Auschwitz. The Romani wore black triangles on their sleeves and were rounded up, starved, and executed, often digging their graves before being shot or gassed. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, more facts about the Romani Holocaust experience emerged. Researchers believe the actual number of Romani killed might be three times what they initially thought, around 1.5 million. International Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of August 2, 1944, when 2,897 Romani, most of them children, elders, and women, were murdered in the “Gypsy camp” at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
