Veep Day (1974): August 9

On August 9, 1974, President Richard Nixon became the first president to resign from office in US history. That same day, his ‘veep’ Vice President Gerald Ford assumed the presidency and became the 38th president of the United States and led the country from August 9, 1974 – January 20, 1977. Robert Birch of Pun Corps created this event. Mr. Birch died in 2005.

Assistance Dog Week, Intl.: August 4-10

International Assistance Dog Week is observed annually in early August to honor and raise awareness about animals and their trainers that enrich life for those with disabilities. Key objectives include: 1) Raising awareness and educating the public on the role of assistance animals. 2) Honor the puppy raisers and trainers of assistance dogs. 3) Recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities. Davis Innovations' CEO Marcie Davis created International Assistance Dog Week. She is also the author of "Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook."

National EOS Awareness Week is an Australian awareness campaign and research fundraiser. The following is a description of what EOS is from the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders' press release: "Eosinophils (pronounced "ee-oh-sin-oh-fills") are a type of white blood cell that helps our immune systems fight off infections and parasites. They also play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system, tissues, organs, or bloodstream without a known cause, they may have an eosinophil-associated disease. These conditions are further characterized by the areas of the body in which the eosinophils have accumulated. Examples include the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis), stomach (eosinophilic gastritis), and bladder (eosinophilic cystitis). Symptoms of eosinophil disease may vary depending on the area of the body and age. Patients often embark on a long, frustrating journey of seeing many different specialists before a diagnosis is made. Although not commonly life-threatening, these chronic diseases require lifelong treatment and can cause debilitating symptoms. Most subsets of eosinophil-associated disease do not yet have an FDA-approved pharmaceutical indicated for treatment." The United States holds its Eosinophilic event in May.

Exercise with Your Children Week: August 4-10

Let's Move! This day aims to increase opportunities for kids to be physically active, both in and out of school, and to create new opportunities for families to move together. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where almost 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one-third of all children born in 2000 or later will have diabetes, and many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. Active Families: Engage in daily physical activity: 60 minutes for children and 30 minutes for adults. Active Schools: A variety of opportunities are available for schools to add more physical activity into the school day, including additional physical education classes, before–and after-school programs, recess, and the opening of school facilities for student and family recreation in the late afternoon and evening. Active Communities: Mayors and community leaders can promote physical fitness by increasing safe routes for kids to walk and ride to school, revitalizing parks, playgrounds, and community centers, and providing fun and affordable sports and fitness programs. The US Government previously supported the week-long event, which continues without official sponsorship.

Farmers' Market Week, Ntl.: August 4-10

National Farmers Market Week supports farmer's markets throughout the US and always occurs the first full week of August. Farmer's markets preserve America's rural livelihoods and farmland by providing economical distribution options for smaller farmers and those wishing to test new markets. Furthermore, they stimulate local economies. Growers selling locally create 13 full-time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned, and farmers that do not sell locally create three jobs per $1 million. Farmer's markets increase access to nutritious food, particularly in cities where access to fresh food is often limited to wealthy neighborhoods. On top of that, farmer's markets are cost-effective. The middle man is eliminated, and the farmer sells directly to the consumer. Farmer's markets are increasingly popular with SNAP families (welfare). Fifty-two percent of SNAP households shop at farmer's markets and direct from farmers today than did in 2011. Perhaps, most importantly, farmer's markets bring the country to their customers. Farmers help educate people about where food comes from and often provide cooking ideas and homemade jams, canned food, and juices. This week is about getting out and getting to know your local farmer's market and benefiting from fresh food at its peak.

World's Fair of Money (US-IL): August 6-10

The history of the World's Fair of Money dates back to the mid-20th century when the American Numismatic Association (ANA), founded in 1891, began holding annual conventions. Over time, these conventions evolved into what's now known as the World's Fair of Money. This event usually occurs in a different city each year, usually in the United States, attracting thousands of collectors, dealers, and the general public worldwide. The World's Fair of Money aims to provide a platform for coin enthusiasts and collectors to come together. It includes auctions, educational forums, exhibits, and a bourse floor where dealers can buy and sell coins. It's an excellent opportunity for investors and collectors to meet with coin dealers, learn and add to their collections. The highlight of the World's Fair of Money is the exhibit area, where rare and historically significant numismatic items are displayed—many seldom seen outside of a museum setting. The United States Mint and several foreign mints often have booths at the fair, offering the latest coin and medal releases. Representatives of various numismatic organizations and clubs are also present, making the World's Fair of Money a central hub for networking and knowledge-sharing among the numismatic community.

Great River Tug Fest (US-IL/IA): August 8-10

The Great River Tug Fest takes municipal rivalry to a whole new level, with the towns of LeClaire, Iowa, and Port Byron, Illinois, challenging each other annually to a game of tug-of-war across the Mississippi River. Like so many crazy events, this one started with a group of men challenging each other in a bar. The match is held on the second Thursday through Saturday in August and includes carnival rides, live entertainment, a large parade, food vendors, crafts, and other attractions. However, the main event is undoubtedly the tug-of-war across the Mississippi River, with the losing city getting soaked in America's biggest river and the winner claiming the title for the following year. The tug-of-war tradition started in the 1980s and features a large 2,700-foot, 700-pound rope stretched across the river. Port Byron's team digs in on their side in Illinois, and LeClaire occupies the bank in Iowa. Boaters and river traffic gather in the center of the river for a front-row seat as both sides then engage in a titanic tugging match, pulling with all their might to claim victory. The competition includes several categories, with men's, women's, and youth teams all participating. Typically around ten tug-of-war matches play out each year, with the calmative wins determining which city is the year's victor.

Shabbat Chazon, or the Shabbat of Vision, is the Haftarah (Tanakh sections) read on the Saturday before the fast of Tisha B'Av, which mourns the destruction of the two temples of the Hebrew faith. Shabbat is Sabbath or Saturday in Hebrew. Shabbat Chazon is sometimes called the "Black Shabbat" as it is the saddest of the year. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday.

Qixi Qingren Jie, Chinese Valentines Day or Double Seven Day always on the 7th Day of the 7th month of the Chinese calendar; this festival originated during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD). Chinese Valentines Day, or the Qixi Festival, celebrates the union of two star-crossed lovers in Chinese mythology who, through the help of magpies creating a bridge between them, now form the Milky Way in the stars. In China, this is a festival for young girls and newlywed couples, and it ultimately symbolizes sexual happiness and marital devotion.

However, national retailer Pet Food Direct (now Chewy) has taken up the mantel in promoting this day and offers the following suggestions for National Spoil Your Dog Day. 1) Dish out the "treats." 2) Create an adventure. 3) Head to the dog park. 4) Find a special "doggy" event. 5) Give him/her new dog toys or fashion accessories. 6) Get wet. 7) Throw a "paw-some" party. 8) Take your dog to work. 9) Make it a spa day. 10) Keep it unique - No one knows your dog better than you. You probably know what he or she loves even more than they do. The most important thing is that you make the day extra special. After all, it is Spoil Your Dog Day.
