Amelia Earhart Day (1897): July 24

Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Aitchison, Kansas. She is the 16th woman to receive a pilot's license from the FAI and is best known as the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean. In 1937 she undertook the monumental challenge of attempting to be the first woman to fly around the world. On July 2, 1937, around 8:45, she sent her last message, then her plane disappeared. Neither the plane nor her body was recovered. Amelia Earhart day occurs each year on her birthday as a celebration of her life and accomplishments.

Mormon Pioneer Day is an official holiday in the American state of Utah and is celebrated worldwide within Mormon communities. Mormonism is a derivative of Christianity, following some customs and teachings of the faith, including the Bible. However, Mormonism includes scriptures (Book of Mormon), traditions, and beliefs not found in Christianity. Pioneer Day commemorates the establishment of the first settlement of Mormons, self-described as Latter-Day Saints, in Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Mormonism began on April 6, 1830. It currently counts nearly 17 million members worldwide, placing it as the sixth-largest global faith, just slightly ahead of Judaism at 15 million.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) occurs on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). Devotees observe daylight fasting until darshan (the sight of the moon). Once seen, prayers to Lord Ganesha are said, and the fast ends. National Thermal Engineer Day celebrates the science and its pioneer, Frenchman Nicolas Leonard Sadi Carnot (June 1, 1796 - Aug. 24, 1832). Considered the Father of Thermodynamics, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot lived for just 36 years between 1796 and 1832. His theories, today referred to as the Carnot Cycle and first published in his 1824 book "Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire," focused upon the idea of a heat-driven engine. With such an engine, the gas expands and creates energy through piston movement. His work impacted the Industrial Revolution, contributing to the creation of the diesel engine, and later supplied the foundation for the discovery of the second law of Thermodynamics: total entropy (disorder) of a system never decreases through time.

Chili Dog Day celebrates the combination of two American inventions: the hot dog and chili. You can't understand the Southwestern United States without understanding its affinity for chili. Chili is a Mexican-American invention. It is a mole-based stew developed during cattle drives between Northern Mexico and Montana during the western expansion in the US of the 19th century. Mole is a style of sauce from Mexico. Beans, one of the easiest to transport and inexpensive sources of protein, were the cowboys' main sustenance on the cattle trail. Often beans were all they had, so the cowboys mixed these with spices and chilies. Meat, usually beef, bison, or venison when available, was added, creating Chili con Carne. Today, people take great pride in their chili recipes. Chili appears on hamburgers, hotdogs, and nachos served in bread bowls or eaten alone. What chili is, is really up to the chef, as long as it has chilies of several varieties.

Drowning Prevention Day, World: July 25

Drowning is a significant global public health issue, causing approximately 236,000 deaths annually. It is one of the primary causes of accidental death, particularly for individuals aged 1-24 years, and constitutes 7% of all injury-related deaths. Drowning affects all regions and economies, but over 90% of incidents occur in low and middle-income countries, with over half of global drownings happening in the WHO Western Pacific Region and WHO South-East Asia Region. In response to this issue, the General Assembly declared World Drowning Prevention Day, which takes place annually on July 25th. This day is meant to raise awareness about the devastating impact of drowning and promote proven preventative measures. Some of these measures include installing barriers to limit access to water, creating safe areas away from water, teaching water safety and swimming skills, training in safe rescue and resuscitation techniques, enforcing safe boating regulations, and improving flood risk management. The UN General Assembly invited the World Health Organization (WHO) to coordinate drowning prevention efforts within the UN system. As part of this role, WHO produces advocacy materials, organizes a global launch event, and supports national and local activities in countries worldwide.
