Shaun McLaughlin created black Family Month in New York to focus on the needs of Black families. The month utilizes the tradition of family reunions to get the community involved. Involvement includes supplying free health services, education, and entertainment opportunities. Families are encouraged to do activities together such as reading, family dinners, classes, and attend annual check-ups. The organizers are no longer available for this event; however, tradition has it on the calendar, and it continues to be observed by African American families throughout the country.

Blueberry Month, Ntl.: July

Since 2003 the NABC and the US Department of Agriculture have recognized July as National Blueberry Month. The Canadian Government also recognizes its National Blueberry Month in August. Blueberries are grown in 36 of the 50 states in the US. They are a favorite summer fruit, high in antioxidants and other health benefits. This month's celebrations include family discounts at u-pick farms, recipe contests, promotions at supermarkets and farmers' markets, and blueberry festivals throughout the country. Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Ntl.: July

Founded in 2002 by etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore, National Cell Phone Courtesy Month occurs each year in July. In a 2010 poll, 40% of Americans stated they “often experience generally rude or disrespectful behavior, cursing, near-cursing or people interrupting conversations to use e-mail or cell phones.” Cell phone rudeness is on the rise. This is a month to focus on what you can do. The following are some basic guidelines: 1) If live people are with you, pay attention to them. The calls and text can wait. 2) Don’t advertise your business. Excuse yourself from a gathering if you need to speak on the phone. 3) If you know taking the call will be emotional, reject it until you’re in a quiet place without an audience. 4) Keep your phone on vibrate when in public. 5) Watch your voice volume. If you have to yell to be heard, hang up and resume when you are at a quieter place. 6) Excuse yourself ahead of time by alerting your companions if you’re expecting a call and will need to leave the group to take it. 7) Send a text message when you want to send a quick message, but not as a replacement for a conversation. 8) Use earphones or a headset to avoid distracting others in public areas whilst listening to streaming media. 9) Never text and drive. 10) Avoid texting and social media postings if you’ve been drinking.

Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness-Prevention Month, Ntl.: July

National Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month occurs in July and is sponsored by AmeriFace and CleftcAdvocate. Cleft and craniofacial conditions affect thousands of infants, children, teens, and adults in the United States annually. Some are born with congenital anomalies like cleft lip and palate, others with more complex, life-threatening craniofacial conditions. Some are burned, injured in accidents and animal attacks, or diagnosed with various oral/head/neck and skin diseases. Header Picture: Angieleca Hayahay of the Philippines was born with a cleft lip. She had surgery when she was denied a job as a nurse because of her cleft lip. Today Angieleca works as a nurse, helping others overcome cleft and craniofacial disfigurement. Culinary Arts Month, Ntl.(1929): July

National Culinary Arts Month falls in July, the same month the American Culinary Federation was formed in 1929. Many restaurants and culinary schools throughout the United States use this month to focus on the various aspects of cuisine and the careers available in food preparation and presentation. Various organizations have sponsored this month. Currently is an unofficial observance without a formal sponsor.

Disabilities Dignity (Pride) Month: July

Disability Dignity Month focuses on the 30% of Americans with a physical or mental disability. It celebrates the unique culture of various disability communities and their achievements. Advocates hope to teach the general population to avoid terms considered ableist. Ableist language uses common words tied to a disability that can be seen in a derogatory context. Examples include saying retarded instead of mentally impaired. Blind instead of saying vision impaired, or dumb instead of mute. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Due to the anniversary, July is chosen as Disability Dignity Month; some refer to this event as Disability Pride Month.

Doghouse Repairs Month, Ntl.: July

July is a month for men to mind their Ps & Qs and avoid getting in trouble with the women in their lives by making an effort to show how much they care. "National Doghouse Repairs Month" was created by Heidi Richards Mooney. Being in the "dog house" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving just the doghouse for sleep. Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and an uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. National Doghouse Repairs Month is the month to avoid all that with a pre-emptive strike of kindness.

Dry July is a fundraising event for people affected by cancer. To participate, register, pledge to give up alcohol for a month, and ask your friends and family to sponsor you for a Dry July. If you don't drink, try giving up soda, sugar, or something else for the month. It's all for a good cause and one of the easiest things you can do for someone and yourself!

Family Reunion Month: July

With summer upon us and the kids out of school, many families use vacation time to visit and meet with their extended families. Family reunions are a social and valuable means for cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents to mingle, get to know each other, and create lasting memories. Another way to celebrate Family Reunion Month focuses on safety. Do you and your family have a plan of what to do in the event of a fire, earthquake, tornado, or other disasters that might cause you to become temporarily separated? Do your children know where to find emergency supplies? Do you have a family rendezvous point? Use the month to place an emergency family reunion plan that helps keep you and your family safe in the event of a disaster. Family Reunion Month in July (or August, depending upon who you ask) is an unofficial monthly observance in the United States with no sponsor. Tradition forms its origin.

Fibroid Awareness Month: July

Commencing in 2016, July is Fibroid Awareness Month. Currently, several states and the District of Columbia recognize the month, with a grassroots push to make it a national month in the works. Estimates say that over 200,000 women are affected in the United States only, and this event is to spread awareness about the disease, what symptoms women should be wary of, and how or where to seek help. Fibroids (uterina myoma) are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years. The cause of fibroids isn't well understood. Risk factors include a family history of fibroids, obesity, or early onset of puberty. Symptoms may include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and pelvic pain. Treatments include medications and removal of the fibroid. Fibroids are chronic, meaning they can last for years or even lifelong. Supporters of the campaign are encouraged to wear white throughout July.

Grilling Month, Ntl.: July

National Grilling Month educates Americans about safe food handling, storage, and cooking in the great outdoors. Grilling is an excellent way to prepare meats and vegetables that are low fat and tasty. However, thousands of people are hospitalized yearly due to illnesses caused by food not being prepared, cooked, or stored properly. The Department of Agriculture has put together several booklets on food safety and various types of meat, from hamburgers to wild game.

Group B Strep Awareness Month, Intl.: July

Each year in July, Group B Strep International sponsors International Group B (GBS) Awareness Month to focus on educating pregnant women about the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.), 25% of pregnant women are at risk or carriers. GBS infects babies during pregnancy and their first months of life, and GBS can cause miscarriages, stillborns, and premature birth. Many children who contract GBS become sick, suffer from lifelong handicaps, and/or die.

Herbal Prescription Awareness Month: July

The Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc. sponsors Herbal Prescription Awareness Month. With the rise in over-the-counter supplements and the increased reliance on prescription drugs, hospitals and doctors are seeing a marked increase in illnesses resulting from herbal medicines interacting with prescription drugs. Herbal medicines can interact with prescription drugs in three ways: • Causing an exaggerated response to the effect of the prescription; • Counteracting the effect of the drug; • Inhibit absorption of a prescription by the body leading to the patient not getting enough medicine. This month teaches about herbal medicine's side effects and potential interactions and the prescriptions you take. Check with your pharmacist and ask for a list of any herbs known to cause issues with your medication.
