Orthodox Palm Sunday, the beginning of Passiontide, the lead-up to the resurrection. The day commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem in 33AD, an event on which all four Gospels agree. The name is derived from the laying of palms on the road done by the people as He entered. Today it is customary for the faithful to carry palm leaves into a church to mark this auspicious event. In the Orthodox Christian faiths, holidays follow the Julian calendar and therefore fall on different days than those based upon the Gregorian calendar.

Qingming Festival (CN/TW): April 5

The Quingming Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day, or the Pure Brightness Festival occurs each year in early April and is a public holiday in most Asian nations historically tied to China. The festival signals the beginning of the planting season and a day for paying respect to ancestors. The holiday originates from the legend of the acts of Jie Zitui (770 - 476 BC). Legend says that Jie cut a piece of meat from his leg and gave it to his lord to save his life during exile. When the lord returned to power, he initially forgot about Jie but later found and rewarded him. Jie, however, sequestered himself and his mother within a mountain. To find Jie, the lord set the mountain on fire, only to find Jie and his mother died. Heartbroken, the lord established the day of Jie's death as the Hanshi (Cold Food) Festival. The following year the lord went to the mountain again and found the willow trees revived. He instructed that the day after the Hanshi Festival was called Qingming Festival. In time, the two festivals became one.

Read a Road Map Day celebrates an essential component of civilization for the past 3,000 years. The first known road map is the Turin papyrus map showing the travel-friendly riverbeds near Thebes, Egypt, in 1160 BC. GPS devices have replaced standard road maps in recent years, but map reading is essential for everyone. Maps are still used in books, can be drawn, and are critical in understanding historical events as they are often the only reference point. Plus, what happens if the GPS isn’t working? Can you find your way around old school? Most young people today cannot. Take this opportunity to test your map reading skills and make sure you and your children still know how to read a map if it ever becomes necessary (like when traveling in many places overseas where GPS isn’t available). It is a skill that may save your life!

Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi (H): April 5

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) occurs on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers precede the breaking of the fast to Lord Ganesha. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Army Day (1917): April 6

First proclaimed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 during the height of WWII, Army Day has been celebrated in America each year since. April 6, 1917, is the day the US entered the First World War. The following is the proclamation in the President's own words. "I have proclaimed April 6 Army Day. That day means more than ever to us this year. We are fighting an all-out war in defense of our rights and liberties. Army Day becomes, therefore, in fact, a total-war day. It becomes a day when all of our citizens in civil pursuits can rally to the support of our armed forces, for only in the united effort of all of our forces—Army, Navy, and civilians—can we find the strength to defeat our enemies. Never before in the one hundred and sixty-six years of our history as a free Republic under God have, our armed forces had so much meaning for us all. We are engaged in our greatest war, a war that will leave none of our lives wholly untouched. We shall win that war as we have won every war we have fought. We are fighting it with a combined force of free men that is, in Lincoln's words, of the people, by the people, for the people of the United States of America. Our Army is a mighty arm of the tree of liberty. It is a living part of the American tradition, a tradition that goes back to Israel Putnam, who left his plow in a New England furrow to take up a gun and fight at Bunker Hill. Caramel popcorn mixes sweet and salty, creating a delicious snack that satisfies both cravings. Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania used to make a special treat for the holidays from corn they cooked in oil with salt and sugar, which is why we call it "kettle corn," and it's different from caramel popcorn. German brothers Frederick and Louis Rueckheim opened a popcorn store in the United States during the 1870s. To expand their brand, they experimented with various toppings. They hit the winning combo when they mixed popcorn with molasses and peanuts. Today their invention is known as "Cracker Jack." Caramel popcorn can be made of molasses, drizzled caramel, or both. Today it is one of the most popular varieties of popcorn and is especially cherished during the holiday season. National Caramel Popcorn Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

On March 6, 1782, Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok Maharaj, known formally as Rama I, King of Siam, established the royal succession and dynasty of Thailand, which continues to the present day. King Rama claimed the throne of Siam via military conquest, crowning himself on this day. He had 42 children, ten by his wife. Chakri Memorial Day is a public holiday in Thailand, marking this anniversary.
