Unplugging, National Day of: March 6/7

National Day of Unplugging is a 24-hour period where people worldwide volunteer to unplug and live without technology from sundown on a Friday in March to sunset Saturday. What’s with the sundown-to-sundown timeline? The event was started by Reboot, a Jewish consortium of artists, writers, intellectuals, and others who explore what it means to be Jewish and Jewish culture. In the Jewish faith, events start at sundown. The Sabbath, the day of rest in the belief, always begins on Friday at sundown and goes until Saturday at sunset. It is outlined in the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) the Sabbath is to be kept holy as a day of rest and introspection to commune with God. What better time to unplug, relax, connect with family and friends and do something other than remain chained to technology?

Universal Human Beings Week: March 1-7

Universal Human Beings Week was created by the International Society of Friendship and Goodwill in the 1980s to focus on universal human rights, diversity, inclusivity, and recognizing the commonalities shared by all people, regardless of their backgrounds. Though the organization no longer exists, the Internet promotes this week via social media. Universal Human Beings Week focuses on: Promoting Human Rights: Emphasizing the importance of universal human rights as defined by international declarations and treaties. Celebrating Diversity: Recognizing and celebrating the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of people worldwide while acknowledging our shared humanity. Fostering Global Unity: Encouraging a sense of global community and solidarity, transcending borders, ethnicities, and social divisions. Educating about Inclusivity: Raising awareness about the importance of integration and equality in all aspects of society. Addressing Global Challenges: This section highlights the need for collective action to address global challenges that affect all human beings, such as climate change, poverty, and conflicts. Encouraging Empathy and Understanding: Promoting empathy, understanding, and respectful dialogue among people from different backgrounds. Though the organization behind the event no longer exists, the idea of a day celebrating the universality of humanity lives on.

Umbrellas have protected people from the wind, sun, snow, and rain since around 2000 BC. The superstitions originate in pagan faiths that believed that the natural world represented various gods and spirits. It was thought that opening an umbrella indoors would block these spirits or gods, thus leaving you unprotected.

National Umbrella Month celebrates the parasol, sunshade, brolly, parapluie, rainshade, gamp, Bumbershoot, and umbrolly, better known as the umbrella. The umbrella as a sunshade dates back to ancient China, nearly 4,000 years ago. Using umbrellas for rain didn’t gain favor until the 1600s, and then it was only something women used. That was changed when Englishman Jonas Hanway defied convention and began carrying one everywhere he went in 1750s Europe. Practicality overcame vanity. By the end of the century, men and women regularly carried umbrellas to shield them from the rain. This event was created by Thomas Edward Knibb and is currently unsponsored.

On March 21, 2006, it started with the saying, "just setting up my twttr." Its author, Jack Dorsey. It would be another three months before Twitter would be known to the world when it officially launched on July 15, 2006. Though not very long ago, Twitter, for better or worse, has heavily impacted every nation it touches. Today, it is hard to imagine the world without it or what those five little words would come to mean in the years that followed. Twitter was purchased by Elon Musk in October 2022.

Trisomy Awareness Month: March

Trisomy Awareness Month raises awareness of trisomy, a rare condition in which a person has three copies of a chromosome in a cell rather than the usual two. Trisomy manifests differently depending upon which chromosome receives an extra copy. Trisomy 18, for example (when the 18th chromosome has a third copy), occurs in 1 in 7,000 live births. Trisomy 13 (13th chromosome having a third copy) happens in 1 in 10,000 live births. How these extra chromosomes affect individuals varies—additional and bigger heart chambers, ductus arteriosis, smaller or bigger sizes of different organs, etc.

Transgender Day of Visibility, Intl.: March 31

The United States created Transgender Day of Visibility in 2021 via a Presidential proclamation as an annual observance honoring the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities, including their struggles, activism, and courage. A person identifies as transgender when he or she feels and believes the sex they were born with is not their authentic gender. For example, a male will identify and prefer to live as female and visversa. Changing one's biological sex, or as the community prefers, gender, can involve hormone drug therapy and surgery, but not always. Sometimes it is as basic as changing names, pronouns and wearing different clothes. A transgender woman is born male but identifies as female. A transgender man is born female but identifies as male. Transgender is not the same as being gay, lesbian or bisexual. These terms describe sexual orientation and a person's preference in romantic and sexual relationships. Transgender refers to the gender (biological sexual) identity, how individuals see themselves regardless of their biology or sexual orientation. Transgender people identify as heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or a combination. Roughly 0.03 percent of the global population identifies as transgender.
