Peach Blossom Day: March 3

National Peach Blossom Day has significant connotations in Chinese mythology. An ancient Chinese parable entitled "The Peach Blossom Spring," also known as "The Legend of Shangri-La," tells of escape from political unrest into a utopia of peace at the end of a river shrouded in peach blossoms. The parable is likely the source of James Hilton's 1933 novel "Lost Horizon," which brought the mythical Shangri-la into global awareness. In this utopia, told through the journey of a lone fisherman navigating the flower-laden river, a valley hidden by the peach blossoms emerges, introducing him to a civilization absent of hate, war, pettiness, prejudice, lying, despair, and scorn. It is a world where man and beast live in peace and harmony, and all is perfect. Perfection is too much for the man. Failing to appreciate it, he leaves and returns to the real world. But he is quickly disillusioned and yearns for what he had. Having experienced paradise, he is horrified by reality. Vainly he attempts to return to his perfect place, Shangri-La, never to find it again. Peach blossoms symbolize an ideal society where personal differences, illustrated in the divisions caused by politics, abate, and people work together rather than against each other.

March 23, 2010, was the day when the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into Law in the US, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. Its institution split the nation in two. Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, this act was the biggest and most significant regulatory overhaul of the US healthcare system since 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were added. Even with its passage, the United States remains the only advanced economy without universal healthcare and the only advanced economy where getting sick can quickly bankrupt a family.

The term "Paralympics" is a combination of the words "paraplegic" (originally) and "Olympics," highlighting the close relationship between the two events. The Paralympics are held every four years, just like the Olympics, with separate events for the Summer and Winter Games. They usually occur shortly after the respective Olympic Games, often using the same venues and facilities. The Paralympic Games aim to promote the spirit of sportsmanship, competition, and inclusiveness by showcasing the incredible skills and determination of athletes with disabilities. Since their inception, the Paralympics have grown significantly and now feature thousands of athletes from over 100 countries competing in various sports. The first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960, but the event's origins can be traced back to the Stoke Mandeville Games, which were organized by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann in 1948 for British World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. Over the years, the event expanded to include athletes with various disabilities, such as visual impairments, amputations, and intellectual disabilities. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the governing body responsible for organizing the Paralympic Games and promoting the Paralympic Movement worldwide. The IPC classifies athletes according to their disability to ensure fair competition, and the classification system is continuously updated and refined. The Paralympic Games stand out with a diverse range of sports, some of which are unique to the event, such as goalball, boccia, and wheelchair rugby. Other sports are adapted versions of those in the Olympics, like wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and para-swimming. The number of sports and events included in the Paralympics has grown over time, reflecting the increasing diversity of the athlete population and the ongoing efforts to make the games more inclusive.

Pandemic Day might go down in history as one of its eeriest coincidences. On March 11, 1918, the first cases of the Spanish Flu were reported in the United States when 107 soldiers at Fort Riley, Kansas, were diagnosed. The Spanish Flu would claim the lives of 500,000 US citizens and 22 million people worldwide. Fast forward to March 11, 2020, when the novel Coronavirus, named COVID-19, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. As of this writing (June 2021), the world is still amid this pandemic. Over 614,000 Americans have died, and globally, nearly 4,000,000. However, the global number is considered a vast underestimate, with experts estimating that the number is closer to 20 million. Nations, including India, Brazil, Syria, Yemen, Palestinian Territories, and others, lack the medical infrastructure, testing, and reporting mechanisms to track infections and deaths, particularly in rural communities, accurately.

The day commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem in 33 AD, an event that all four Gospels agree on. The name is derived from the laying of palms on the road done by the people as He entered. Today it is customary for the faithful to carry palm leaves into the church to mark this auspicious event.
