National Moth-er Day celebrates moths and those who protect, study, and care for them. There are over 11,000 species of moths in the world, each unique. Moths and their caterpillar form are food for many animals, and they are also essential in pollination, nectar collection, and seed distribution. The Malay archipelago hosts the largest moth in the world, which can be up to 60 square inches (152 square centimeters) in size with a wing span of over a foot (30 centimeters). Moths can be extremely colorful, like butterflies. The main difference between a moth and a butterfly is its antennas. In a moth, these are fat and look like feathers or small saws. Butterfly antennas are smooth and thin. Butterflies also tend to fold their wings above them when at rest. A moth will rest with its wings open and on full display.

Moshoeshoe's Day has to be one of the most delightful events linguistically. Simply saying Chief Moshoeshoe's name brings a smile to the face. Born in 1776, Chief Moshoeshoe became the first king of the African nation of Lesotho, uniting the Basotho people. He was known for his generosity toward defeated enemies. Upon his death on March 11, 1870, colonialism became a reality for his people. Today he is celebrated for his diplomacy and as the nation's first king.

For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.

Middle Name Pride Day is celebrated by telling three people who don't know your middle name what it is and the story behind it. Through the first 4,500 years of biblical human history, surnames rarely existed, and people operated on a first-name basis. Surnames were infrequent in western society until the tenth century AD, and exceptions occurred, generally within the aristocracy. However, most people were identified by their tribes, culture, city, job, characteristics, or position of influence. Consider King David, Erik the Red, Attila the Hun, Julius Caesar, Socrates, Aesop, John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth, and Mary [of} Magdalene. Then a person's name qualified its bearer like a business card rather than today's use of names which act more like a serial number. The first known use of a middle name occurred in Europe around the 14th century. The use of middle names took off in the 20th century, and they benefit people with ubiquitous first or last names like Mohammed, Joseph, Lin, Mary, and Sarah. In the United States, individuals can lose their middle name upon marriage, which is why you will see many people with two last names and no middle name. In other societies, generation after generation strings together surnames to trace their family's genealogy and produce really, really long names. Often the wife's last name becomes the children's middle name.
