Key deer are a sub-species of the North American white tale deer and native to the southernmost Florida Keys. The miniature deer average 25-35 inches (64 - 89 centimeters) high at the shoulder, making them roughly the same size as a Labrador Retriever. Key deer landed on the endangered species list on March 11, 1967, when only a few dozen remained. Today they are protected and swim from island to island, with the majority living in the national refuge. Key Deer Day is an awareness campaign that focuses on education and protecting the habitat of this fun size deer.

Kamada Ekadashi (H): March 28

In the Hindu religion, Ekadashi is a holy day with two Ekadashi each month. Lord Vishnu is worshiped. Kamda Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the Shukla (waxing moon) paksha of the Hindu month of Chaitra. As its name Kamada suggests, worship on this day is believed to grant the individual all his or her desires while cleansing each of sins. Family members are freed from curses. Kabaddi Day, World: March 24

Kabaddi is a contact team sport that originated in South Asia and is especially popular in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran. The sport involves two teams sending a "raider" into the opponent's half of the court to tag members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi," all in one breath. The objective for the defenders is to either evade the raider or tackle them before they can return to their half of the court. The sport is described in various ancient texts, including the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, and traces back over 4,000 years. It is one of the oldest games still in play and is believed to have originated in ancient India. The term "Kabaddi" is derived from the Tamil word "kai-pidi," which means "to hold hands." The sport includes several regional variations, including Sanjeevani, Amar, and Punjabi, with rules and styles differing from one region to another. The basic principle remains the same: two teams send a raider into the opponent's half of the court to tag or touch members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi" in a single breath. Kabaddi received international exposure when demonstrated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the Indian National Games in 1938. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity, especially in South Asia, and has become a regular feature in multi-sport events like the Asian Games. World Kabaddi Day seeks to increase the sport's appeal beyond Asia, the United Kingdom, and Canada to the rest of the world. World Kabaddi Day began in 2018 and is celebrated annually on March 24.

K-9 (Police Dogs) Veterans Day (1942): March 13

March 13, 1942, is the official birthday of the United States K-9 Corps. Dogs have been in the military and law enforcement for centuries. Thousands have died in the line of duty, and they perform many functions, from search and recovery to defense and security. K-9 Veteran's Day was created by the late Joe White and his wife, Sally. Though Joe left this world in 2009, this event continues to grow in importance, with several states now honoring the services of K-9 soldiers and police officers in times of war and in keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe.

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month (CA): March

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month occurs in March in Canada and July in the United States. In Canada, approximately 61,500 children live with arthritis. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood, and it is characterized by persistent inflammation in the joints that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling. Physical activity is essential for children with arthritis. These children can develop weak muscles and low bone strength because of their condition and because they tend to be less physically active than children who don't have arthritis. The Linking Exercise, Activity, and Pathophysiology in Childhood Arthritis Canadian Collaborative Team (LEAP) studies the link between physical activity and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The work of the LEAP team will provide information and help develop safe and effective exercise programs to keep children with arthritis healthy and improve their quality of life. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is about supporting research and helping kids with arthritis be kids!

Johnny Appleseed Day (1845): March 18*

Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds for lodging, old clothing, and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22. Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims. Both settlers and Native Americans respected Appleseed. He spoke several languages, protected the environment, and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants. The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.

Joe Franklin Day (1926): March 9

The Bronx, New York native started interviewing in the dawn of television and interviewed thousands of movie stars often before they were famous and up-and-coming musical talents. Sadly. Joe Franklin passed away from prostate cancer on January 24, 2015.

He became the African nation’s first president, and its seventh president upon its independence. Liberia was created as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS) to provide freedom and prosperity in Africa for persons of African descent. Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847. JJ Roberts Day is a national holiday.

Passion Plays are a Christian tradition, a telling of Jesus Christ's last days from Palm Sunday through the crucifixion and resurrection. Also referred to as the Way of the Cross, the largest of these in the world has been delighting audiences since 1843 in Iztapalapa, Mexico. Over one million people attend each year as thousands of residents make up the cast and perform the play. It is a spectacular celebration, something to be seen at least once in a lifetime.
