Girl Scout Week, Intl.: March 8-14

International Girl Scout Week begins with Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday. The Girl Scouts have been an organization since March 12, 1912, when Juliette Gordon officially registered the first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. Traditional celebrations consisted of seven days of service during Girl Scout Week. Taking part in a religious service has been part of Girl Scout Service in the past and continues today. Girl Scouts also celebrate by giving back to their communities and families. They practice maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating right, getting plenty of exercise, and doing things that bring happiness.

Ging Zat (CN): March 5-6

Ging Zat, (sometimes spelled Ging Zit in English) or "Awaking of the insects" in Chinese, is a rather funny tradition in Hong Kong culture. It's the day each year when insects emerge from hibernation, and tradition states that the gates of hell open and the spirits of the dead return to the world of the living. It is a time to honor and appease these spirits with offerings of food and other gifts. The aggrieved persons hit a paper puppet of a villain or an enemy with a shoe or slipper to expel lousy luck and misfortune and ward off negativity and evil spirits. Effigies represent a specific person, such as a political figure, spurned lover, or a business rival. Participants may take turns hitting it with a shoe or slipper while shouting insults and curses; it is quite effective at releasing negative emotions and channeling them into the representation rather than the actual person.

National Problem Gambling Awareness Month (NPGAM) is a grassroots public awareness and outreach campaign to educate the general public and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness about the available help locally and nationally. Warning Signs include: Lying to loved ones about gambling activity Deterioration of work performance Trouble concentrating Missing deadlines and essential responsibilities Worry about mounting debts and inability to pay them The American Psychiatric Association (APA) now classifies gambling disorder as persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior that disrupts personal, family, or vocational pursuits. "Gambling becomes a serious problem when you can't stop," says Keith Whyte, Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling. "A problem gambler loses control and cannot stick to limits, even when gambling is causing serious financial, family, work or other problems." Six to eight million Americans currently grapple with gambling addictions.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Meltdown (JP) (2011): March 11

Referred to as three-eleven in Japan, today is the anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Meltdown, March 11, 2011. The nuclear disaster occurred when the plant was hit by a tsunami triggered by one of the world’s most deadly earthquakes, a magnitude of 9.0. Radioactive material began releasing the next day. The cleanup continues. Some contaminated water made it to the sea, infecting fish and plant life. More than 300,000 people evacuated the area due to the tsunami and earthquake. The nuclear disaster was ruled manmade as the plant was unable to weather such a disaster. The first three of their six reactors melted down in March 2011, damaging the fourth reactor. Decommissioning could take more than 40 years. Nuclear refugees total over 71,000, most remaining in temporary housing.

Fruit Compote, or as it’s known in cafeteria lunch rooms, fruit cocktail, is a 17th-century French dessert of fresh and dried fruits, and sometimes nuts in a sweet syrup. In Eastern Europe, Fruit Compote is more of a punch, with fruits drenched in juices and drunk from a glass. This version originated with the Turks in the 14th century. National Fruit Compote Day has no official standing or sponsor. We’re not sure why it ended up at this time of the year, but it is a popular dessert during the Jewish observance of Passover, which generally occurs in March or April.

Frozen Food Month, Ntl.: March

March is National Frozen Food Month, sponsored by the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association. Clarence Birdseye is credited with inventing the quick freezing method used to preserve foods by freezing in 1924. Before frozen foods, people had to rely on canned or salted foods to keep supplies fresh for extended periods (unless they lived in frigid climates where freezing was possible in the winter months). It meant that anything perishable had to be bought close to or near the time it was to be cooked, and that isn’t easy to imagine today. Birdseye’s freezing method was so revolutionary because it preserved the flavor and quality of the food through flash freezing. Rather than take hours, which often resulted in freezer burn, ice crystals, and other contaminates to the quality of the food, flash freezing captured the full flavor and nutrition. The food tasted almost as good months later if flash frozen as it would have cooked that day.
