Multilateral disarmament and arms limitation have long been central to the United Nations' efforts to maintain global peace and security. Concerns over weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, remain significant due to their destructive power and threat to humanity. Excessive accumulation of conventional weapons, illicit trade in small arms, and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas pose challenges to international peace, security, and sustainable development. Emerging technologies like autonomous weapons have also garnered attention and raise global security concerns. Observed on March 5, the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness contributes to enhancing understanding of how disarmament efforts contribute to peace, security, conflict prevention, and alleviating human suffering caused by weapons. The General Assembly, through resolution A/RES/77/51, invites Member States, UN organizations, civil society, academia, media, and individuals to commemorate the day through educational and public awareness activities.

The first day of spring is Día Del Turista (Day of the Tourist) in Mexico, and it is celebrated predominantly in the northern cities and towns bordering the United States. It’s a day for the vendors in Mexico to thank the snowbirds (Americans who spend the winter months in the Southwestern US and Mexico) who come down during the winter months by offering specials and gifts, including miniature sombrero pins. The event originated in Nuevo Progreso in the late 1970s. It continues to be a much-anticipated event, especially in Southwestern Texas each year.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: March

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March "Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month." The deinstitutionalization movement of the seventies and early eighties laid the foundation for significant social change. This presidential proclamation called upon Americans to provide the "encouragement and opportunities" necessary for people with developmental disabilities to reach their potential. As those citizens began living within the general community in more significant numbers, programs to provide career planning, job coaching, and supported employment began to emerge. The idea that individuals with developmental disabilities could become productive workforce members was new to many people, and entrenched preconceptions had to be overcome. Advocates recognized a moral imperative to engage individuals with developmental – and other – disabilities. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, workplace discrimination against people with disabilities became sanctionable. The Special Needs Alliance was formed in 2002 by a core group of prominent disability and elder law attorneys who recognized the unique planning needs of younger individuals with disabilities and their families. While the SNA now has members in 47 states, the organization continues to limit membership to those with proven credentials in disability law and advocacy.
