Spilled Milk Day, Don't Cry Over (1678): February 11

06:20 AM | -
Today is the anniversary of the poem published in 1678 by Jean de la Fontaine, "La Laitière et le Pot au Lait." The poem is the origin of the saying, "Don't Cry over Spilled Milk." Below is the English Translation from the original French. The Milkmaid and the Pot of Milk By Jean de La Fontaine Perrette, on her head having a pot of milk Well-placed on a little cushion, Was intending to get without problem to the town. Dressed lightly and short, she went with long strides, Having put on that day, so she'd be more agile, Simple garments and flat shoes. Our milkmaid so attired Counted already in her thought The income from her milk; was using the money; Bought a hundred eggs; had a triple brood of chickens. Everything was going well thanks to her diligent care. "It is, she said, easy for me To raise chickens about my house. The fox will be very skillful. If he doesn't leave me enough to have a pig. The porker to become fat won't take much bran; He was, when I got him, of reasonable weight: I will have, when I sell him, fine and good money. And who can stop me from putting in our stable, Considering the money I will have, a cow and her calf, Whom I will see leap about among the herd? Perrette on this thoughts, leaps also, carried away: The milk falls; goodbye calf, cow, pig, chickens. The lady of all these goods, leaving with sorry eye Her fortune hence spread out, Goes to ask forgiveness to her husband, With a good chance of getting slapped. The story was made into a farce: It was called the Pot of Milk.

Spiritual Teachers Month: February 1

06:20 AM | -
Spiritual Teachers Month is an unofficial event observed in various spiritual communities dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contributions of spiritual teachers. It acknowledges the importance of guidance and mentorship of individuals on spiritual journeys. This idea resonates with many faith traditions and spiritual paths, where teachers play a crucial role in imparting wisdom, understanding, and practices. It is an opportunity for students and followers to recognize the impact of these teachers on their personal growth and spiritual development. Activities during this month may include special gatherings, ceremonies, discussions, and sharing experiences and lessons learned from spiritual teachers. A spiritual teacher, in various traditions, is an individual who provides guidance and instruction in matters of spiritual development, religious practices, and moral guidance. These teachers are characterized by their experience, wisdom, and deep understanding of the spiritual or religious paths they follow and teach. They can be found in many forms, ranging from religious leaders, such as priests, rabbis, imams, and gurus, to non-denominational mentors who offer guidance on more individual and personalized spiritual paths. The history of spiritual teachers is as old as humanity's quest to understand existence's spiritual aspect. Across cultures and religions, spiritual teachers are revered for guiding ethical living, meditation, prayer, and pursuing enlightenment or a deeper connection with the divine. They often embody the teachings they impart, serving as role models for their students or followers. Spiritual Teachers Month is a time for reflection and appreciation for the role of spiritual teachers in enriching and guiding the spiritual lives of individuals. It underscores the timeless importance of mentorship and guidance in spiritual and religious practices, acknowledging these teachers' profound impact on personal growth and understanding.

Spring Festival Holiday (CN): February 17-23

06:20 AM | -
THE SPRING FESTIVAL The dates shown are for the official national holiday. The Spring Festival, a major holiday, is the name for the 15 days between Chinese New Year's Eve and the Festival of Lanterns. It is revered like Christmas in the west or the Eid holidays in the Islamic world. Nationally, it is a whole week's celebration. During the Spring Festival, gifts and red packets of money in even number denominations are exchanged. Families travel to be together; holiday foods are prepared on Chinese New Year's Eve. That night's feast is the "reunion dinner" and the most important holiday meal. Retailers go crazy with specials leading up to and during the festivities. Activities culminate on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival, marking the end of the annual Chinese New Year Celebration. For organizations with business interests in China, block out the week leading up to and the first seven days of the Spring Festival. Getting anyone to pay much attention will be challenging, and celebration is the theme. Each day of the Spring Festival has a different activity. Day one is the welcoming of the deities with firecrackers, dragon dancing, and a vegetarian diet. On day two, married daughters visit their parents. Day three is Red Mouth Day, and paper is burned, symbolizing the destruction of wrath. It is considered very unlucky to visit or have guests on this day. Day four features dinners hosted by employers. Businesses go back to work. Day five features birthday celebrations for the god of wealth. Firecrackers light the sky, ensuring his favor, good fortune, and prosperity in the year ahead. Day six is a day of rest. Day seven is the universal birthday, where everyone becomes one year older, regardless of their actual birthday. Buddhists will avoid meeting people, and non-Buddhists will eat a raw fish salad to promote wealth and prosperity in the year ahead. Day eight focuses on family dinners, with companies hosting lunch or dinner to celebrate the birth of the Jade Emperor. In the hours leading up to midnight, burning incense and food offerings make their way to the shrines of the Jade Emperor. Should a family fail to make offerings, the kitchen god reports their lack of adherence to the Jade Emperor. Day nine is a day for prayers and offerings to the Jade Emperor. Days ten through twelve host parties for the Jade Emperor. Day 13 is vegetarian, a day designed to cleanse the stomach. Prayers, offerings, and tributes to the Chinese god of war, General Guan Yu of the Han Dynasty, take center stage. Day 14 is open. The final day features the Shangyuan Festival of Lanterns. People eat traditional Chinese foods like rice dumplings, rice ball soup, and candies. Traditionally, families stroll the town carrying colorful lanterns.

Spunky Old Broads Month: February

06:20 AM | -
If you’re over 50 and female, Spunky Old Broads Month is your month! Of course, the term ‘old’ is debatable. Fifty is only old if you’re under 40! What does spunky mean? First used in 1786, according to Webster, it describes a courageous person with an attitude, high-spirited and energetic. The word “Broad” was first used in 1659, though not to refer to a woman. The English slang appeared during the early 20th century as a derogatory term for common women of the lower classes. The context used for Spunky Old Broads Month is cheeky and defiant. How will you celebrate Spunky Old Broads Month? This event was created by Dr. Gayle Carson, lifestyle coach and media personality, to celebrate personal reinvention and living life to its fullest. Her practice mentors individuals so that they not only survive but flourish and reinvent themselves personally and professionally.

Sticky Bun Day, Ntl.: February 21

06:20 AM | -
Delicious, sweet, buttery, and nutty, sticky buns have been a favorite breakfast sweet (or mid-afternoon sugar rush) for centuries. Sticky buns originated in North Africa and Greece and worked their way through Europe as the Romans expanded their empire. These sweet breads didn’t hit major popularity until around 1688 when the Germans and Dutch, fleeing war in their regions, immigrated to the United States, many settling in Philadelphia. Today if you get a chance to visit the Reading (Pronounced Red-ing) Terminal in downtown Philadelphia, you’ll find an Amish Bakery and several others that continue to make the sticky buns the way they’ve been made for centuries. Enjoy!

Strawberry Day, Ntl: February 27

06:20 AM | -
National Strawberry Day is an unofficial event that strawberry lovers, food enthusiasts, and the agricultural community embrace. It serves as an opportunity to highlight strawberries' versatility, flavor, and nutritional benefits. The strawberry is beloved for its taste and valued for its nutritional qualities, including being rich in vitamins and fiber and high in antioxidants and vitamin C. Strawberries have a long and rich history that dates back centuries. The wild strawberry, known for its smaller size and intense flavor, originated in ancient Rome. The cultivation of strawberries began in Europe in the 1300s. In the 18th century, cross-breeding of North American and Chilean varieties in Europe led to the larger strawberries we know today. The history of strawberries in the United States is also significant. The Native Americans were already using strawberries in their diets, and the colonists quickly adopted the fruit into their cuisine. The first documented strawberry cultivation in America was in 1835, and since then, the US has become one of the largest producers of strawberries in the world. The most common strawberries grown are the June-bearing, Everbearing, and Day-neutral varieties. Each type has its unique growing season and characteristics, making strawberries available almost year-round. National Strawberry Day celebrates the strawberry, highlighting its history, cultivation, and numerous culinary uses. It's a day for individuals and communities to appreciate and indulge in this delicious fruit, which has a rich history and remains a favorite in diets around the world.

Student Volunteering Week (UK): February 9-15

06:20 AM | -
Student Volunteering Week in the United Kingdom has a significant history and is vital in fostering community engagement among students. Established in the early 2000s, the week began as a response to the growing interest in youth volunteering, aiming to harness young people's energy and enthusiasm to benefit local communities. The event marks a pivotal moment for educational institutions to encourage and facilitate student engagement in volunteering activities. Student volunteering in the United Kingdom traces back to the early 20th century. In 1912, for example, the Student Christian Movement (SCM) was a significant national presence in colleges and universities, promoting social service among students. University settlements pioneered in the 1880s were the initial sites where students volunteered, offering practical training and discussion on social problems. Students were involved in volunteer-run services in partnership with local authorities, such as children's care committees and maternal and child welfare services. The primary purpose of Student Volunteering Week is to promote participation in volunteering and community service. It aims to inspire students to understand the importance of contributing to their communities and raising awareness about social issues. The week offers opportunities for students to develop valuable skills like teamwork and leadership, and it facilitates connections between students, educational institutions, and community organizations. Celebrating Student Volunteering Week involves various activities, from participating in volunteer projects to attending workshops and seminars that educate about the importance of volunteering. Recognition of outstanding volunteers and the creation of platforms for networking and engagement are also key components of the week.

Summer's Day, National (AU): February 28

06:20 AM | -
Summer's Day in Australia is a national day to remember all the children who have lost their lives due to preventable injuries and to assist those children and family members who are still struggling with the consequences of avoidable injuries (accidents). Summer's Day is named in honor of four-year-old Summer Steer, who swallowed a button battery and died when it burned through her esophagus into her aorta. Summer's mother started the holiday to educate parents, honor her daughter and prevent other such deaths from happening. It is held annually in Australia on the last day of summer, usually the 28th of February, unless it is a leap year.
