It's every parent's nightmare. Your child comes home from school, steps off the bus a couple of houses away, and vanishes into thin air. This is what happened to 16-year-old Ali Lowitzer on April 26, 2010. As of this writing in 2020, Ali has yet to be found. Her mother, JoAnn Lowitzer, created National Missing Persons Day to bring attention to her daughter's situation and highlight the plight of the over 600,000 people in the United States who go missing every year and the 4,400+ unidentified bodies recovered each year.

Molasses Bar Day, Ntl.: February 8

National Molasses Bar Day (Treacle Bar Day) celebrates the sweet, nutty cookie-like cakes that are a favorite winter treat. Technically this day is about the cookie, which is dull, and it has no reason for being or sponsor. We propose a better purpose, that it serves as a reminder of a tragic event a century past, even if it doesn't fall on the same day. We're talking about the Great Boston Molasses Flood (Boston Molassacre). On January 15, 1919, an immense storage tank filled with 2.3 million gallons (8,700 m3) of molasses collapsed, sending a thick wave of the sticky liquid through Boston's historic North End. The force of the flood pushed buildings off their foundations and tipped over vehicles and railway cars. Twenty-one people, predominantly immigrants and city workers, died; another 150 were injured. The molasses was stored to make ethanol, which is used in alcohol and munitions. A rapid warming of temperatures that day caused the tank to implode and the city to be flooded. We think remembering the people who died and the dangers associated with leaving tanks unattended during rapid weather changes is a much better tribute to Molasses Bar Day. It is certainly more interesting. Thoughts? After all, bars are like bricks, and bricks are used to rebuild.

The National Money Show provides coin collectors access to hundreds of dealers offering extensive numismatic inventory at all price levels, a live auction, exhibits of rare and historical treasures, and educational programming for both beginning and seasoned hobbyists. Hosted by the Colorado Springs-based American Numismatic Association, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items, The National Money Show encourages the collecting public to discover and explore the world of money through an array of instructional and outreach programs. For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.

International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62) to promote the preservation and protection of the world's languages and linguistic and cultural diversity, and multilingualism. The date represents the day on February 21, 1952, when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, one of the two national languages of what was then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh. This event first ran in 2000.

Wellcat Herbs has created a unique niche for itself by inventing crazy holidays, and this is one. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was once the home office of the David Letterman show. The logic goes if one media icon could make Amish country home, why not the rest of Hollywood or Broadway? There was a 2010 Indy film called Lebanon, PA. Though the film was titled for the city, it was filmed elsewhere in Pennsylvania. It hardly seems fair!

However, it is only exciting if you have skin in the game and have seen the movies. To this end, in 2020, the governing body of the Academy Awards created Global Movie Day. It's your opportunity to kick back, catch up on this year's nominees and pick your favorites. It's also a rare opportunity to engage with Academy members and filmmakers across social media. Muffin Day, Ntl.: February 22

Muffin Day raises awareness about hunger and homelessness. Originally, Muffin Day was another superfluous food holiday created on the internet without sponsors, purpose, or reason. Enter attorney Jacob Kaufman, the "muffin man of San Francisco." Kaufman regularly distributed fresh muffins to the city's homeless on his way to work each morning. In 2015 he saw a chance to take a useless day, Muffin Day, and make it mean something. Reaching out to his colleague, Julia Levy of Atlanta, the two created a community-focused initiative centering on muffins in their cities. Volunteers, or muffineers, purchase muffins to raise money for homelessness and then give these muffins to the homeless to address hunger—two objectives accomplished with one muffin? Now that is an impressive quick bread! Kaufman's muffineering inspired others worldwide to do the same in their cities. The event moved from its fixed date of February 20 to a weekend nearest that date, thus allowing muffineers to take part in "spreading the muffin" over weekends globally. Are you interested in becoming a muffineer or creating a Muffin Day drive in your city? Try donuts, croissants, or breakfast strudels if muffins aren't your culture's thing.
