Cotton Bowl, Goodyear (US-NV): January 25

06:20 AM | -
THE SOFTER SIDE OF FOOTBALL: THE COTTON BOWL The Cotton Bowl, a revered institution in American college football, boasts a storied history that traces back to its founding in 1937. The brainchild of Dallas oilman J. Curtis Sanford, the inaugural game kicked off on January 1, 1937, at the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas, Texas. Originally conceived to bolster tourism in Dallas, the Cotton Bowl swiftly ascended to a position of eminence and influence within the college football community. Traditionally held on New Year's Day, the Cotton Bowl was one of the major bowl games, often featuring top teams from the Southwestern and Southeastern United States. Its importance grew as it became part of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998, aligning it with the national championship race and attracting higher-ranked teams. In 2014, the Cotton Bowl was anointed as one of the six esteemed bowls in the College Football Playoff (CFP) system, a testament to its enduring significance. It now takes center stage, hosting national semifinal games every three years in rotation with the other New Year's Six bowls: the Rose, Orange, Sugar, Peach, and Fiesta Bowls. This pivotal role in the CFP system underscores the Cotton Bowl's influence in determining the national champion. The competition typically features high-profile teams from various conferences, but the participants can vary depending on conference agreements and CFP selections. Historically, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference (SEC) teams have often competed in the Cotton Bowl. Still, introducing the CFP has broadened the pool of potential participants to include top teams from across the nation. The Cotton Bowl is not just a game but a celebrated event in college football, drawing large crowds and significant media attention. It symbolizes excellence and tradition in the sport, providing memorable moments and contributing to the cultural fabric of college football in America.

ALA Youth Media Awards: January 26

06:20 AM | -
The American Library Association honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens each year. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards, including the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, guide parents, educators, librarians, and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in children's and young adult literature and media. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Laba Festival (CN): January 26

06:20 AM | -
WELCOMING THE NEW YEAR: CHINA'S LABA FESTIVAL The Laba Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday, marks the start of preparations for the Lunar New Year. Celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the festival has deep historical and cultural significance, blending ancient agricultural customs with Buddhist traditions. The Laba Festival's origins date back over two thousand years to the early dynasties of China. Initially, it was a time to give thanks for the harvest and offer sacrifices to ancestors and deities. With the advent of Buddhism in China, the festival took on additional meanings, commemorating the day Prince Siddhartha, who later became Buddha, attained enlightenment. One of the most important customs of the Laba Festival is the preparation and consumption of Laba congee, a special porridge made from various grains, beans, dried fruits, nuts, and sometimes meat. The ingredients symbolize wealth, health, and harmony. According to legend, when Prince Siddhartha was meditating under the Bodhi tree, a kind woman offered him a bowl of mixed congee, which sustained him on his path to enlightenment. Today, families across China prepare this porridge, sharing it with relatives, neighbors, and the less fortunate, reflecting themes of charity and community. Another key feature of the Laba Festival is the offering of Laba garlic, especially in northern China. Garlic cloves are soaked in vinegar and turn a vibrant green color by the Lunar New Year. This tangy condiment is believed to cleanse the palate and is often served with dumplings during the festive season. In addition to culinary customs, the Laba Festival involves various religious and cultural activities. Buddhist temples hold special ceremonies and prayers, inviting the community to participate in chanting and meditation. It is a time for reflection and renewal, setting intentions for the coming year. The Laba Festival, with its deep historical roots, serves as a significant cultural bridge, connecting modern Chinese society with its rich heritage. It fosters a sense of unity and continuity, reminding people of the values of gratitude, compassion, and togetherness. This aspect of the festival is particularly important, as it plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the unique cultural identity of China, making us all feel the festival's cultural significance. In recent years, the Laba Festival has experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity. Cities across China are organizing public events, food fairs, and educational activities to celebrate and preserve this ancient tradition. This resurgence is a testament to the enduring appeal of the festival, with its blend of culinary delights, religious significance, and communal spirit, making it a cherished and significant part of China's cultural landscape.

Clean Energy Day, Intl.: January 26

06:20 AM | -
TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLEAN ENERGY The International Day of Clean Energy is an annual observance that promotes the adoption and development of clean energy sources worldwide. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of transitioning to sustainable energy solutions to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and ensure a healthier planet for future generations. International organizations, including the United Nations, environmental NGOs, and clean energy advocacy groups, support this event. Clean energy, also known as renewable energy, is derived from sources that do not deplete natural resources or cause significant environmental harm. It encompasses technologies and processes that harness natural phenomena, such as solar radiation, wind, hydrological cycles, geothermal heat, and biological processes, to generate power. Clean energy systems are characterized by their low or zero emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, making them environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional fossil fuel-based energy production. This definition aligns with the principles of sustainable development, aiming to meet current energy needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The primary purpose of the International Day of Clean Energy is to highlight the benefits of clean energy, encourage investments in renewable technologies, and advocate for policies that support the global shift towards sustainable energy. It serves as a platform for governments, businesses, and individuals to showcase their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener future. IMPORTANCE OF CLEAN ENERGY Clean energy is crucial for several reasons: —Environmental Protection Reducing reliance on fossil fuels helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the impacts of climate change and reducing air pollution. —Health Benefits Cleaner air leads to fewer health problems, such as respiratory diseases, and improves public health. —Energy Security Diversifying energy sources reduces dependence on finite resources and enhances energy security. —Economic Growth The clean energy sector generates jobs, stimulates technological innovation, and contributes to economic growth. A SHORT HISTORY OF CLEAN ENERGY The history of clean energy dates back to the early 19th century when the first experiments with solar power and wind energy began. However, significant advancements in clean energy technologies have occurred over the past few decades, driven by increasing concerns about climate change and environmental degradation. In the 1970s, the oil crisis highlighted the vulnerabilities of fossil fuel dependence, leading to renewed interest in alternative energy sources. Since then, technological advancements, government policies, and international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, have accelerated the development and adoption of clean energy solutions. TOP FIVE CLEAN ENERGY ALTERNATIVES —Solar Power Solar energy harnesses the sun's power through photovoltaic cells or solar thermal systems. It is one of the fastest-growing clean energy sources, offering a sustainable and abundant electricity supply. —Wind Power Wind turbines convert wind kinetic energy into electricity. Wind power is a mature technology with a significant capacity for large-scale energy production. —Hydropower Hydropower generates electricity by using the energy of flowing water. It is a reliable and established clean energy source, particularly in regions with abundant water resources. —Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy taps into the heat from the Earth's core to generate electricity and provide heating. It is a consistent and low-emission energy source. —Biomass Energy Biomass energy is produced from organic materials, such as agricultural residues, wood, and waste. It provides a renewable and versatile energy source for electricity, heat, and transportation fuels. CONSEQUENCES OF NOT MIGRATING TO CLEAN ENERGY Failing to transition to clean energy in the next 100 years could have catastrophic consequences: —Accelerated Climate Change Continued reliance on fossil fuels would lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating global warming and more frequent and severe weather events, rising sea levels, and disrupted ecosystems. —Environmental Degradation Increased pollution from fossil fuel combustion would lead to more severe air and water quality issues, harming wildlife and natural habitats. —Health Crises Higher pollution levels would contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, increasing healthcare costs and reducing quality of life. —Resource Depletion Finite fossil fuel resources would become increasingly scarce and expensive, leading to economic instability and energy insecurity. —Economic Risks Delaying the transition to clean energy would hinder economic growth, as countries needing sustainable technologies may miss out on the financial benefits of the burgeoning clean energy market. The International Day of Clean Energy is a critical reminder to embrace clean energy solutions to ensure a sustainable, healthy, and prosperous future for all.

Juan Pablo Duarte Day, (DO)(1813): January 26

06:20 AM | -
Juan Pablo Duarte, born on January 26, 1813, in Santo Domingo, is a revered figure in Dominican history, often hailed as the father of Dominican independence. He was known for his fervent dedication to liberating his homeland from Haitian rule, which he achieved through establishing the Dominican Republic in 1844. Duarte's early years were tumultuous in Hispaniola, an island shared by the modern-day Dominican Republic and Haiti. The eastern part of the island was under Haitian occupation following its unification by Haiti in 1822. This political climate profoundly influenced Duarte, who sought an education in Europe and thrived on the liberal and nationalist ideologies sweeping the continent. Completing his education, he returned to Hispaniola in the 1830s and discovered a society yearning for autonomy. He became the driving force behind a secret society named La Trinitaria, established in 1838. La Trinitaria attracted like-minded young nationalists who aimed to overthrow the Haitian government and proclaim a sovereign Dominican state. Duarte's leadership and organizational skills were instrumental in unifying the factions opposing Haitian rule. The movement faced numerous challenges, including internal dissent and the Haitian army. However, with dogged determination, the Trinitarians ultimately prevailed and declared the Dominican Republic independent on February 27, 1844. This historic event marked the culmination of Duarte's lifelong dream and efforts. Despite his pivotal role in the country's independence, Duarte's life after 1844 was anything but easy. Political rivalries and turmoil led to his exile, and he spent many years abroad, primarily in Venezuela. A sense of disappointment and detachment from the political affairs of the Dominican Republic marked Duarte's later years. Juan Pablo Duarte died on July 15, 1876, in Caracas, Venezuela. His legacy is celebrated in the Dominican Republic, where he is remembered as a national hero and the architect of the nation's independence annually on Duarte Day, a national holiday in the Dominican Republic.

Play God Day: January 9

06:20 AM | -
Play God Day is based on the idea of playing God. However, while "playing God" is a phrase that usually has a negative connotation and can be considered blasphemous in many faiths, in this case, it's meant to encourage people to think about what they would do if they had the power of a god. What would they do for humanity? How would they help people? Once you know what you would do, find a way to make it happen, even if it's something as simple as holding the door.
