Peter Ganine patented his sculpture of what would become the 'rubber duck' in the 1940s and chose to reproduce it as a floating toy, resulting in over 50 million sales. Rubber Ducky day honors the character Rubber Ducky's birthday, proclaimed by Sesame Street as January 13. The yellow duck became a popular character on the children's television show through its appearances with the character Ernie who first sang the "Rubber Ducky Song" on an episode in February 1970. The song, surprisingly, made it to 16 on the Billboard Top 100 charts on September 26, 1970.

Today is the birthday of Ray Stanton Avery, January 13, 1907. Avery invented the first self-adhesive labels for pricing, known as the Kum Kleen Pricer Stickers. This single invention grew into the company we know today as Avery Dennison Corporation. From the humble price sticker developed, an entire industry of commercial and copyrighted colorful stickers, ranging from gold stars and smiley faces to well-known cartoons and characters. National Sticker Day celebrates the contributions of Avery to commerce and popular culture and occurs annually on the day of his birth. Avery died on December 12, 1997.

Caesarean Section Day marks the anniversary of the first successful Caesarean Section, performed in America by Dr. Jesse Bennett on January 14, 1794. This first procedure, done in the patient's home in Virginia, was without equipment or antiseptics. The official note in his medical journal is: "January 14, 1794, J.B. on E.B. Up February 15, cured March 1." Shortly thereafter, he performed the same operation on his wife, saving her life and that of their only child, a daughter. Before the Caesarean Section or C-section, babies that couldn't be born naturally either died in childbirth or, if operationally extracted, killed the mother to save the child. The C-section permitted the safe removal of the child without killing the mother.
