The Veterans of Foreign Wars work to care for US military personnel who have fought overseas, providing humanitarian aid, training, psychological assistance, and anything else needed as they re-enter American society.

Ballerina Day (1863): September 30

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the first Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Perinea Legnani, on September 30, 1863. Legnani first gained worldwide recognition in 1893 when, as Cinderella, she performed 32 consecutive fouettes en tournant at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time of her career, she was considered the best ballet dancer in the world, and her brilliance was in her technique. On Legnani's birthday, Lario Danza International Ballet holds an annual competition for young dancers. The Pierina Legnani Award is given. Only 11 women in history have earned the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Ms. Legnani died on November 30, 1923, in Italy.

Chewing Gum Day: September 30

Chewing Gum Day celebrates the frustration of all janitors, gum. The practice of chewing a substance goes back to the 1st century AD, when the Greeks, the Mayans, and other civilizations chewed various substances to clean teeth and freshen their breath. By the 18th century, the South American sapodilla tree's milky extract, chicle (think Chiclet's Gum), became chewing gum, what we call latex today. The next incarnation came from John B. Curtis, who developed the original commercial chewing gum, "The State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum," in 1848. It was the gum of a spruce tree. Modern chewing gum originates with William F. Semple, who used a flavored synthetic rubber to help patients strengthen their jaw. A dentist by trade, he filed the patent for his chewing gum on December 28, 1869. Amos Tyler of Toledo, Ohio, filed a similar patent on July 27 of the same year. Semple's patent is the one that reigned.

Day of Reunification (RU)(2022): September 30

Russian President Vladimir Putin commemorated the first Day of Reunification on September 30, 2023, marking the anniversary of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions becoming part of the Russian Federation. On September 30, 2022, these regions were officially incorporated into Russia, following what Putin described as a "defining and truly historic event." He emphasized that, via referendums conducted in line with international norms, millions in these areas had chosen to align with their "Fatherland." The Russian leader took a moment to reflect on the courage and resilience of these regions' inhabitants. According to Putin, Russia's decisions were made despite significant external pressure, including intimidation efforts and what he termed as nationalist-driven attempts to strip them of their cultural and linguistic heritage. He referenced the events of 2014 in Kyiv, criticizing "nationalists and their Western patrons" for instigating a coup and subsequently sparking a large-scale civil conflict. This turmoil, Putin asserted, led to significant hardship in Donbas, including constant shelling and punitive actions. In his speech, Putin passionately spoke of the unity between the Russian people and the residents of the newly incorporated territories. He noted that the recent elections in these regions reaffirmed their commitment to being part of Russia and expressed gratitude towards their contributions to Russia's strength and unity. He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to rebuild and develop these regions, mentioning the construction of schools, hospitals, roads, and cultural sites. Contributions from volunteers, religious and civil organizations, entrepreneurs, and other entities were celebrated as evidence of a united country working in harmony. Looking forward, Putin acknowledged that challenges remain. He voiced his commitment to implementing a comprehensive program for the socioeconomic revival of these historically significant regions. In announcing the new holiday, the Russian President expressed his gratitude to the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republic residents and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. "Thanks to you, your fortitude and determination, Russia has become even stronger," he stated. "We are one people, and together we can overcome anything and meet any challenge." Ending his address, Putin wished everyone a happy Day of Reunification with Russia.

Influenza activity peaks at the end of August in most regions in Australia, with Tasmania and the Northern Territory experiencing a late rise. Meanwhile, Western AU reports increased activity from mid-August through September. Although the World Health Organization has reported that influenza activity has continued to decline in all temperate countries of the southern hemisphere, that doesn't mean people shouldn't take the necessary precautions. Influenza-like illnesses have increased in many European countries.

Truth and Reconciliation, National Day of (CA): September 30

Residential schools are a shameful part of our history that continue to have a deep and lasting impact on Survivors, their families, and their communities across the country. We cannot forget this truth. As Canadians, we must all learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Only when we face the hard truths of our past, can we truly move forward together toward a better future. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was joined today by the Executive Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), Stephanie Scott, the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller, and Survivors from across the country to raise the Survivors’ Flag on Parliament Hill. This flag will fly in memory of the 150,000 Indigenous children who were forcibly separated from their families and communities to be sent to residential schools. It will honor the Survivors, their families, the communities whose lives were forever changed, and those who never came home. The residential school system in Canada robbed Indigenous children of their childhoods. It attempted to assimilate them, forcing them to abandon their languages, cultures, spiritualities, traditions, and identities. Many suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and many never returned home. The painful legacy of the residential school system lives on today for Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast. The orange and white Survivors’ Flag was designed by the NCTR in consultation with Survivors from across Canada as an expression of remembrance and to be shared with all Canadians. It features nine distinct elements, each with a special meaning. For example, the seeds depicted underneath the family and children represent the spirits of the children who never returned home. We still have work to do. Reconciliation is not the responsibility of Indigenous Peoples – it is the responsibility of all Canadians. It is our responsibility to continue to listen and to learn. The Government of Canada will continue to do just that and support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in their healing journey. Together, we will build a better future for everyone.
