Throughout the country, rallies and vigils are held. Official National POW/MIA Recognition Day posters are displayed at schools and public buildings. First observed on July 18, 1979, the date moved to the third Friday of September in 1986.

COVID-19 Officially the Deadliest Pandemic in US History (2021): September 20

On September 20, 2021, US deaths from the COVID-19 virus officially passed the known death toll from the 1918 Flu pandemic, often referred to as the Spanish Flu. The 1918 - 1920 pandemic claimed 675,000 American lives and an estimated 50 million people globally. COVID-19 has officially claimed over 675,000 American lives, with the vast majority killing those refusing the vaccine between April and September 2021. As of September 20, 2021, 229,811,438 people worldwide have been infected. Of those, 4,713,516 have died. Those numbers are likely conservative due to a shortage of testing supplies globally and deaths not registered as COVID due to death at home or not in a hospital. The United States leads the world in infections and deaths due to political reasons. Nearly 35% of the population doesn’t believe in wearing masks or getting vaccinated, and many from this group do not believe COVID exists. Because of this, deaths and infections continue to rise, particularly in states with Republican governors and dominant evangelical Christian populations. Update: September 1, 2022 The United States has surpassed 96,149,016 recorded infections and over 1,069,748 deaths from COVID-19. Worldwide 607,503,134 infections and 6,492,964 deaths due to COVID have been recorded. Nearly three years since its inception, over 500,000 people become infected and over 1,500 people each day continue to die from COVID-19.

Hagioaica-Titu Fair (RO): September 20 - 21 (est)

In 2023, the traditional autumn Titu Fair in Romania triumphantly returned, drawing large crowds after being on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Located near the central city of Titu, northwest of Bucharest, the nearly 200-year-old fair serves as a critical community gathering point. Set up in the small village of Hagioaica, the fair features various attractions, including carousels, toys, and live music, offering a brief respite from daily challenges for some of Romania's poorest citizens. While the event maintains its original goal of bringing the community together, it also serves as an economic opportunity. Locals set up stalls to sell toys, vegetables, and other household items in preparation for winter. Although prices at the fair are generally lower than in stores, attendees noted increased costs due to the pandemic and ongoing war in Ukraine, one of Romania's neighbors. Despite Romania's progress as a European Union member state, many among its 19 million population still face economic hardships. The Titu Fair, therefore, not only preserves a tradition but also provides a temporary escape and financial relief for its attendees.
