BEAR NECESSITIES MONTH: HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAR CONSERVATION September is Bear Necessities Month, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about bear conservation and these majestic animals' vital role in our ecosystems. The Bear Conservation Alliance champions this month-long initiative with a coalition of wildlife organizations committed to protecting bear habitats and ensuring the survival of bear species. THE HISTORY OF BEAR CONSERVATION Conservation efforts for bears have a long and storied history, beginning in earnest in the early 20th century. As human activities such as logging, hunting, and urban expansion increasingly encroached on bear habitats, populations began to decline. In response, conservationists and wildlife organizations initiated measures to protect bears, including establishing protected areas, stricter hunting regulations, and public education campaigns. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 was a significant milestone, providing legal protections for several bear species and funding for conservation programs. TOP FIVE BEAR SPECIES NATIVE TO THE UNITED STATES American Black Bear—The most common bear species in North America, black bears live in forests, swamps, and mountains across the continent. Brown Bear (Grizzly Bear)—Found primarily in Alaska and parts of the western United States, grizzlies are known for their impressive size and distinctive hump. Polar Bear—Inhabiting the Arctic regions of Alaska, polar bears are well adapted to cold environments and depend on sea ice for hunting seals. Louisiana Black Bear—A subspecies of the American black bear, these bears are found in the lower Mississippi Valley and have benefited from recent conservation efforts. Kodiak Bear—A subspecies of the brown bear, Kodiak bears are native to the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska and are among the most giant bears in the world. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAR CONSERVATION Bear conservation is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Bears play a significant role as apex predators and keystone species, influencing the populations of other animals and contributing to the balance of their habitats. THE WORST SCHOOL SHOOTING IN HISTORY: BESLAN SCHOOL #1 It was the first day of school, September 1, 2004, at Beslan School Number 1, an elementary school in the small town of Beslan (population 30,000), Russia. At 9:20 AM, 32 Chechen terrorists attacked the school with guns, grenades, and bombs. The parents and students (approximately 1,200 people) were attending the annual first-day celebrations. Over the next three days, more than 334 people died, including 20% (186) of the school's children, most in the lower grades. Beslan is the worst terrorist attack targeting children in modern history.

Better Breakfast Month: September

Better Breakfast Month coincides with back-to-school. Better Breakfast Month seeks to remind parents and children to eat breakfast if they want to do well at school or work. In a 2000 study of Boston Public School pilot breakfast programs, students who increased their breakfast participation rates increased their math grades, decreased their school absence and tardiness rate, and decreased emotional/behavioral problems. Nearly 60% of staff reported a positive change in student behavior and attentiveness. (Dr. Michael Murphy and Ronald Kleinman, Massachusetts General Hospital) According to a 2002 study conducted by Theresa Nicklas of Baylor College of Medicine, adolescents who eat breakfast are two to five times more likely than breakfast-skippers to consume at least two-thirds of the daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of calcium, magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, B6 and D. Nicklas found that the intake of other vitamins and minerals – including zinc and calcium – as well as of protein and carbohydrates, was much higher among those who ate breakfast. Also, fat consumption was lower. (Journal of Adolescent Health, Volume 27, Issue 5). Better Breakfast Month appears to be the inspiration of Delaunay Communication Inc. in Seattle, Washington.

National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, as deemed by a resolution by the U.S. Senate, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of a brain aneurysm. It is a condition faced by 1 in 50 people in the U.S. each year. Most common in people over 35, brain aneurism occurs when a blood vessel swells in one spot and creates a balloon. Should this balloon burst or leak, it can cause strokes or kill. Aneurysms develop from various risk factors, including infection, tumors, traumatic head injury, drug use, smoking, hypertension, and a family history of brain aneurysms. Approximately 6,000,000 people develop a non-ruptured brain aneurysm every year; even when not ruptured, an aneurysm can lead to fatigue, short-term memory problems, speech problems, loss of balance and coordination, and changes in behavior.
