International Infection Preventionist, or IP Week, celebrates the men and women on the frontlines of disease and infection prevention. An Infection Preventionist (IP) is a healthcare professional who works to prevent and control the spread of infections in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Their role is crucial because infections, including those resistant to antibiotics, can spread quickly in these settings, causing serious illness or even death. Here are some of the critical duties of an Infection Preventionist: Surveillance: IPs regularly monitor and analyze infection data from various hospital departments to identify trends and outbreaks. They might use sophisticated software to help with this. Education: IPs provide training and education to healthcare staff on infection prevention and control best practices. They may also be responsible for educating patients and their families. Policy Development and Implementation: IPs often develop and implement infection control policies and procedures. They must ensure that these policies comply with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines from organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Outbreak Management: If an infection outbreak occurs, IPs take the lead in managing it, including identifying the source, implementing control measures, and evaluating their effectiveness. Consultation: IPs work with other healthcare professionals on preventing and controlling infections related to anything from a specific patient case to the design of a new healthcare facility. Research and Quality Improvement: IPs participate in research to develop new infection prevention and control techniques. They also lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives related to infection prevention. Collaboration: IPs often collaborate with other professionals such as microbiologists, epidemiologists, public health officials, and hospital administrators. They might also be part of an interdisciplinary Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) committee. Infection Preventionists typically have a background in nursing, medical technology, microbiology, or public health. They also usually have specialized certification in infection control, such as the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) certification. Their role is critical in healthcare settings to protect patients and staff from infectious diseases.

Pet peeves accomplish nothing, and healthy relationships are bigger than that. Don't sweat the small stuff! What are some of the top pet peeves? 1. When people copy your idea and take credit for it. 2. People acting like they're hurt or sad to get attention (Playing the victim). 3. Rudeness and lack of ettiquette. 4. Messy/unflushed shared toilets. 5. Interrupting. 6. Talking over other people. 7. Invasion of personal space (this is an American thing—we need our 1-meter buffer). 8. Lack of respect for others' opinions. 9. Stopping in the middle of a crowded path, hallway or street. 10. Not covering mouth when coughing or sneezing. 11. Leaving grocery carts loose in the parking lot. 12. Not replacing the toilet paper. 13. Using a speaker on a cell phone in a public space. 14. Playing music or games without headphones in a public space. 15. Squeezing the toothpaste from the middle. 16. Driving slow in the left-hand lane (or right in Commonwealth countries). 17. USS Cole (YE)(2000): October 12

On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole, a Navy guided-missile destroyer (DDG-67), was hit by an Al Qaida terrorist attack while harboring and refueling in Aden, Yemen. Seventeen American sailors were killed in the attack, and thirty-nine were left injured. The USS Cole bombing was the deadliest strike against a United States Naval vessel in more than two decades. The last major attack against a peace-time US naval ship was the June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty by the state of Israel. Thirty-four died, and 172 were wounded in that 75-minute unprovoked assault; it is covered in-depth in LEEP Calendar. By 2002, US Intelligence would link the attack on the USS Cole to the events of September 11, 2001. The mini-series "The Looming Tower" covers this in detail.

Ahoi Ashtami (H): October 13

Ahoi Ashtami traditionally occurs mid-fall in October or November, a mother-son observance in the Hindu faith. Mothers of sons awaken before dawn, place pristine water into a mud container called a kora karawa and pray to the goddess Ahoi. The women then fast (vrat) for the entire day. Mothers believe fasting coupled with prayers endows their male children with good luck. At nightfall, the mother’s fast is broken with fruit. She continues to pray, offering pure water from the kora karawa to the stars in the sky and making an offering of sweets to a wall painted with the image of the goddess. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.
