Hair Day, Ntl.: October 1

06:20 AM | -
LOVE YOUR LOCKS! IT'S NATIONAL HAIR DAY National Hair Day recognizes the importance of hair care and the impact hair has on personal identity and self-expression. Founded by It's a 10 Haircare, a leading brand in the haircare industry, National Hair Day aims to highlight the significance of maintaining healthy hair and to encourage people to embrace their natural beauty. Hair plays a crucial role in a person's life, often influencing their self-esteem, confidence, and even career prospects. Whether through personal style choices, cultural significance, or professional grooming standards, hair can be a powerful form of expression. A well-maintained hairstyle can enhance a person's appearance, help them feel more confident, and even contribute to making a positive impression in professional settings. National Hair Day aims to educate people about the importance of proper hair care and celebrate the diversity of hair types and styles. The event also serves as a platform to promote the latest haircare products and techniques, helping individuals keep their hair healthy, strong, and looking its best. Caring for your hair involves several key practices: —Regular Washing and Conditioning: Keeping hair clean is essential for maintaining scalp health and preventing the buildup of oils and products. Using a conditioner suited to your hair type helps keep hair hydrated and manageable. —Protecting from Heat and Damage: Heat-styling tools like blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands can prevent damage. When heat is necessary, applying a heat protectant spray can minimize harm. —Healthy Diet: Nutrition plays a significant role in hair health. A balanced diet of vitamins and minerals, particularly biotin, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids, supports strong and healthy hair growth. —Regular Trims: Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks helps prevent split ends and maintain overall hair health, keeping it fresh and well-groomed. —Using the Right Products: Selecting haircare products that suit your hair type—whether oily, dry, curly, or straight—ensures that your hair receives the care it needs, including choosing shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that enhance your hair's natural texture and condition. National Hair Day encourages everyone to take pride in their hair and invest in proper haircare routines that enhance appearance and confidence. The event promotes self-expression and the importance of self-care by celebrating the diversity of hair and the various ways it can be styled and cared for.

Hog-out Month (US-TX): October

06:20 AM | -
HOG-OUT MONTH IN TEXAS: BATTLING THE INVASIVE FERAL HOG EPIDEMIC Every October, Texas dedicates itself to a statewide effort known as Hog-out Month. The campaign is spearheaded by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and supported by local county governments, landowners, and wildlife management organizations. The initiative's primary goal is to control and reduce the population of wild hogs, an invasive species that has become a significant problem across the state. Wild hogs, also known as feral hogs or wild boars, were first introduced to Texas by Spanish explorers in the 1500s as a reliable food source. Over time, these animals escaped into the wild and with no natural predators and a prolific breeding rate, their population exploded. Today, Texas is home to an estimated 2.6 million wild hogs, making it the state with the largest feral hog population in the United States. WHY HOGS ARE A HASSLE The problem with wild hogs in Texas is multifaceted. These animals are highly destructive, causing extensive damage to crops, property, and natural ecosystems. Their rooting behavior, in which they dig up the ground for food, leads to soil erosion, water contamination, and the destruction of native plant species. Wild hogs also threaten livestock and can carry diseases affecting animals and humans. The economic impact of wild hogs in Texas is staggering. Each year, they cause an estimated $400 million in damages, affecting farmers, ranchers, and landowners across the state. This figure includes losses in crop yields, the cost of repairing damaged property, and expenses related to controlling the hog population. Hog-out Month raises awareness of this issue and encourages landowners to participate in hog control efforts. Throughout the month, counties across Texas organize hog hunting contests, trapping initiatives, and educational programs to inform the public about the best practices for managing wild hog populations. The TDA also provides resources and support to landowners dealing with hog infestations. The ultimate aim of Hog-out Month is to reduce the wild hog population and mitigate the extensive damage they cause. By bringing communities together in this effort, Texas hopes to protect its agricultural economy and preserve its natural landscapes from further destruction caused by these invasive animals.

Home Eye Safety Month: October

06:20 AM | -
Home Eye Safety Month by Prevent Blindness focuses on educating the public about preventing eye injuries at home. Prevent Blindness states that the average home is full of unnoticed dangers. Most accidents involving everyday household products cause 125,000 eye injuries each year. Ninety percent of these eye injuries are preventable through understanding, safety practices, and proper eye protection. Prevent Blindness notes you can reduce the risks of eye injuries for yourself and other family members by using this simple checklist for different areas of your home: INDOOR EYE SAFETY AT HOME • Provide lights and handrails to improve safety on stairs. • Install lights under cabinets. • Avoid Granite and other high gloss countertops in homes with people over 65. • Wear protective glasses when handling cleaning fluids, especially those with fumes like ammonia and bleach. OUTDOOR EYE SAFETY AT HOME • Inspect and remove debris from lawns before mowing. • Keep paints, pesticides, fertilizers, and similar products properly stored in a secure area. • Keep your tools in good condition; damaged tools should be repaired or replaced. • Wear safety glasses or dust goggles to protect against flying particles, and chemical goggles to guard against exposure to fertilizers and pesticides. CHEMICAL EYE SAFETY AT HOME • Wear chemical safety goggles when using hazardous solvents and detergents. • Read and follow all manufacturer instructions and warning labels.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Month, Ntl.: October

06:20 AM | -
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Month is an annual observance that focuses on maintaining clean and healthy air inside buildings and homes. Traditionally observed in October in the United States, this month-long campaign raises awareness about the factors affecting indoor air quality and the steps to improve it. HISTORY OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY MONTH The observance of Indoor Air Quality Month began in response to growing concerns about the health impacts of indoor air pollution. As people spend significant time indoors, the air quality in these environments is crucial to overall health and well-being. The campaign was initiated by health organizations, environmental groups, and government agencies, recognizing the need to address the often-overlooked issue of indoor air quality. Indoor Air Quality Month educates the public about indoor air pollution sources, such as mold, dust mites, tobacco smoke, household chemicals, and gases like carbon monoxide and radon. The observance highlights the health risks of poor indoor air quality, including respiratory problems, allergies, asthma, and other serious health conditions. It also aims to promote effective strategies for improving indoor air quality, such as proper ventilation, use of air purifiers, regular cleaning and maintenance of HVAC systems, and reduction of indoor pollutants. INDOOR AIR QUALITY MONTH ACTIVITIES Throughout the month, various events and initiatives spread awareness. These include workshops, seminars, public service announcements, and educational materials distributed through multiple media platforms. Health and safety experts and environmental advocates often provide tips and advice on improving and maintaining indoor air quality. Schools, workplaces, and community organizations are encouraged to participate in IAQ Month by conducting air quality assessments and implementing practices to ensure a healthy indoor environment. Since its inception, Indoor Air Quality Month has played a crucial role in bringing attention to the importance of clean air in indoor environments. It has spurred action and conversation about how individuals and organizations can mitigate the risks associated with indoor air pollution. The observance has also contributed to policy discussions and developments related to environmental health and indoor air quality standards.

Inktober: October

06:20 AM | -
Inktober is an annual event that encourages artists worldwide to engage in the art of drawing with ink during October. Jake Parker initiated the event in 2009 to improve his inking skills and drawing habits. It has since gone global, with thousands of artists participating annually. The year's topics post on September 1, and the rules of Inktober are straightforward: 1. Make a drawing in ink. 2. Post it online on any social media platform, blog, or website. 3. Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2023 (or whatever the current year is). 4. Repeat this every day of October. Topics for ink drawings change daily throughout the month. Each is a single word that participants can interpret however they like. Inktober helps artists to develop positive drawing habits, improve their inking skills, and create a body of work. It also fosters community as artists share their work, engage with each other, and gain exposure. THE INKTOBER COPYRIGHT AND PLAGIARISM SCANDALS In 2017, due to a scandal surrounding the trademarking of the name Inktober by Parker and the artwork produced by participants in the month, the month fell out of favor with artists. Artists started receiving cease and desist letters dating back to 2013 using "Inktober" in the title of their works for sale. The legal team behind the strategy sought to retroactively "clear the market" for Parker's upcoming art instruction book—Inktober All Year Long, due for release in 2020. The artists targeted took it as a legal shakedown, as the letters asked for compensation for their original artworks. Parker insists his lawyers acted overzealously, and Amazon and Etsy were responsible for the cease and desist letters that intimated compensation was owed him due to the new trademark. Ultimately, the trademark controversy alienated the art community, and by 2019 Inktober fell out of favor. Then, Parker found himself roiled in a second scandal that year over his book when Youtuber and author of the "Pen and Ink Drawing, a Simple Guide," instructional drawing series, Alfonso Dunn, accused Parker of plagiarism after seeing that a number of the drawings in his books were suspiciously similar to his own. Parker's book followed his using parallel presentations, layouts, and descriptions, as well as similar images, to teach artists to draw in ink, which is highly unusual as each artist has his or her creative process and style. Dunn posted his suspicions and examples on social media, and the global artist community quickly engaged, becoming amateur sleuths and testing the thesis. Social media exploded with examples and tutorials arguing for and against plagiarism. Ultimately, the publisher pulled the book from its 2020 release, and Deviant Art pulled out of hosting the awards. As of this writing, Parker's book has yet to be published. In 2023, the event is coming back with new partners and a professional PR firm behind the event.
