Eliza Doolittle Day: May 20

06:20 AM | -
Who doesn't love My Fair Lady? It is the story of street urchin Eliza Doolittle who, through coaching, learns the mannerisms and speech patterns of the upper class to fool them and get the man of her dreams. George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion forms the basis of this timeless classic, which is replicated in dozens of modern storylines. How you speak and how well you speak continue to designate your level of education and often status in society. Like it or not, you are judged by how well you speak, read and write. Eliza Doolittle Day reminds us of the importance of elocution, grammar, and syntax in effective communication. There will always be differences by region. For example, consider how Americans and the British pronounce the metal aluminum. In America, we say Ah-lu-mah-nim. In England, you'll hear Al-loo-min-ee-um. However, well-spoken is recognized and understood everywhere a language is spoken. Happy Eliza Doolittle Day!

Ely Eel Festival (UK): July 11-13

06:20 AM | -
Ely Eel Festival in the United Kingdom celebrates the fish and its place in English culture over the weekend of Eel Day. The town of Ely holds an eel festival each year that includes folk music, parades, eel pottery workshops, music and dancing, historical displays and re-enactments, and lots of time to sample what was once a staple food in the Fens: smoked and jellied eels as well as more conventional forms of food. Highlights included the British Town Crier Championship and the World Eel Throwing Competition (no eels were harmed in this competition, just stuffed toys).

Emergency Preparedness Week, Ntl. (CA): May 4-10

06:20 AM | -
Preparing for an emergency is something that everyone has a responsibility to do. This year, Canadians are encouraged to learn about the specific risks and hazards in their regions and the actions they can take before an emergency to help reduce the impact of a disaster. To strengthen Canada’s emergency management approach, our government is shifting from a reactive model to one that allows us to predict better, plan for, and prevent natural disasters and the costs Canadians suffer. To this end, we are investing $200 million over five years in the National Disaster Mitigation Program to support provincial and territorial flood mitigation efforts. Through the Get Prepared campaign, our government has worked with provincial and territorial partners to encourage Canadians to know the risks, make a plan and get an emergency preparedness kit. With basic emergency preparedness in place, the next step is to take action to reduce the threats most likely to affect your family and community. Everyone can take simple steps to reduce disaster risk. For example, if you live in a flood-prone area, you can help prevent flood damage by using a weather-protection sealant around basement windows and ground-level doors. Make sure drainage around your home helps move water away from the building. Emergency management is a joint responsibility. This week, we also take the opportunity to recognize and thank first responders, volunteers, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and authorities at all levels of government for their support in emergency management. Together, we are building a strong and resilient Canada.” Follow Get Prepared (@Get_Prepared) on Twitter.

End of the Derg Day (ET) (1991): May 28

06:20 AM | -
May 28 is an important date in Ethiopia because it marks the downfall of the Derg regime and the end of the Ethiopian Civil War. On May 28, 1991, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a coalition of rebel groups, took control of the capital city, Addis Ababa, effectively ousting the military government led by Mengistu Haile Mariam. The Derg, a Marxist-Leninist military junta, had ruled Ethiopia since 1974 when it overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie in a coup. The Derg's rule was marked by widespread human rights abuses, economic hardship, and social unrest, which eventually led to the Ethiopian Civil War. The conflict lasted from 1974 to 1991 and claimed countless lives, caused massive displacement, and devastated the country. Although May 28 is not an official public holiday in Ethiopia, it is remembered by many as the day that marked the end of the Derg regime and the beginning of a new chapter in Ethiopian history. The date symbolizes the transition to a new political era and the hope for a more democratic and prosperous future.

Eosinophil Awareness Week, Ntl.: May 18-24

06:20 AM | -
Created by the US Congress in 2007, National Eosinophil Awareness Week (NEAW) addresses eosinophil-associated diseases. Eosinophils (pronounced “ee-oh-sin-oh-fills”) are a type of white blood cell that helps our immune systems fight off infections and parasites. They also play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system, tissues, organs, and bloodstream, without a known cause, they may have an eosinophil-associated disease. These conditions are characterized by the areas of the body in which the eosinophils have accumulated. A few examples include the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis), stomach (eosinophilic gastritis), or bladder (eosinophilic cystitis). Symptoms of eosinophil disease may vary depending on the area of the body affected and by age. Patients often embark on a long, frustrating journey of seeing many different specialists before a diagnosis is made. Although not commonly life-threatening, these chronic diseases require lifelong treatment and can cause debilitating symptoms. Most subsets of eosinophil-associated disease do not yet have an FDA-approved pharmaceutical indicated for treatment.

Escargot Day, Ntl.: May 24

06:20 AM | -
Escargot is French for "snail." Snails have been part of human diets for millenniums. In 54 BC, the army of Julius Caesar dined on snails throughout its conquest of what today we know as France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of Switzerland, Northern Italy, and parts of The Netherlands and Germany. Snails became popular as a dessert during the Renaissance. Being shelled gastropods and a form of land mollusk, they are classified as "fish" in religious diets. As fish, eating them didn't violate the Christian mandate to eat fish on Fridays or Lent's no-meat restrictions. By the 1890s, Escargots à la Bourgignonne (snails with butter-parsley-garlic sauce) had gone from dessert to appetizer and were considered a posh addition to any meal. Happy Escargot Day!

Etiquette Week, Ntl.: May 12-16

06:20 AM | -
National Etiquette Week came about in 1997 to improve civility in our society and revisit the customs and traditions that define us. Etiquette has become a lost art in the United States. Often considered a set of rules, etiquette is about the golden rule: do unto others, and you’d have done to you. It is about treating people with respect, observing boundaries, and having a set of protocols to use in unfamiliar situations. This day is an opportunity to learn new processes of etiquette and try them out on your family, friends, strangers, and co-workers.
