National Realtor Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the Association of Realtors on May 12, 1908, in Chicago. The organization began with 120 members, 19 boards, and one state association. In 1913 a Code of Ethics was adopted with the Golden Rule as its theme. In 1916, the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges changed its name to The National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB) and adopted the term Realtor® for its members. This term and its derivatives were trademarked on Sept. 13, 1949, and Jan. 10, 1950. In 1972 the organization became the National Association of Realtors® (NAR). Today, membership has surpassed 1.2 million members with 54 state associations, including Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands territories.

He founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The International Federation of the Red Crescent Society was created in 1919 and operates within the Islamic world. The two organizations coordinate together, use the efforts of over 97 million volunteers, and are governed by International Humanitarian Law to protect human life, alleviate suffering and provide life-saving and emergency care worldwide.

Red Nose Day is an annual fundraising event by Comic Relief, wherein people purchase red noses (like a clown) and wear them to increase awareness. Proceeds raised through the event provide support and resources to people living incredibly tough lives in the United Kingdom, the United States, and many of the world’s poorest communities. It strives to end world hunger. This event first ran in 2015. Since the pandemic, fundraising has continued throughout the year. Individual cities, towns, and nations hold Red Nose Days at their discretion throughout the year.

Renaissance Period Officially Begins (1453): May 29

May 29, 1453, is the anniversary of the beginning of the Renaissance Period and marks the day Constantinople, today called Istanbul, fell to the Ottoman Empire. This event signaled the end of the Byzantine period and Christian rule in the East. The Renaissance period would cover the next 300 years, ending in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution (or, some might say - in 1815, with the close of the Napoleonic era). The Renaissance is one of European history's most interesting and disputed periods. National Rescue Dog Day is about finding forever homes for the more than 3.3 million dogs in shelters yearly. Event champion Tails That Teach, Inc. makes the following suggestions on how best to observe this day: ADOPT: If there is room in your life for a dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home. FOSTER: Many dogs abandoned in shelters benefit from socialization or would thrive better away from the shelter environment. Others may require medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. DONATE: Shelters always need donations. In addition to financial contributions, shelters have a list of much-needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming them, and giving them affection improves their socialization. Spay/neuter: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist. Responsible Animal Guardian Month: May

Whether it's an aquarium, terrarium, gilded cage, or four paws, pets add to your life. National Responsible Animal Guardian Month in the United States focuses on the needs of your pets and services that keep them in their best health and happiness. This event is believed created by the California non-profit In Defense of Animals. Per their 2017 press release, the organization outlines its objectives. As animal guardians, we urge all who share their homes with one or more animal companions: 1. To make a lifetime commitment to them, cherish and love them, and always treat them as family, with respect, compassion, consideration, kindness, and gentleness. 2. To care for their emotional needs and address behavior issues. 3. To promise only to adopt and never buy or sell a living creature. 4. To commit to sterilizing your animal companions. 5. Always provide them with nutritious food, fresh water, and daily exercise, and avoid using toxic cleaners and chemicals in your home. 6. always refer to yourself and others as guardians and family of your animal companions rather than owners or masters. 7. Treat all our fellow beings with whom we share our homes and planet with respect, consideration, kindness, justice, and compassion. 8. To protect our and their environments, to preserve their habitats, to work to end their enslavement, and to terminate any cruel and outdated customs and traditions in our country and around the world. In Defense of Animals invites you to pledge to drop the word "owner" and become, from this day, a "guardian" to all animals. Thank you for doing your part.

Ride of Silence, Intl.: May 21

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and killed. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. During National Bike Month, the ride aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police, and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those killed or injured. As of 2010, this has become an international event, with riders worldwide joining in solidarity to honor those who have died in bicycle accidents. This event occurs on the third Wednesday in May unless rained out, and the alternate day is the Saturday following the third Sunday.
