Each Ekadashi has a different name and significance, though this observance can fall into two categories: annual and monthly. All Ekadashi honor Lord Vishnu. Varuthini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the waning moon (Krishan Paksha)fortnight of the Hindu month of Chaitra. Vamana, the avatar of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped on Ekadashi, with rituals strictly followed, including an all-night vigil and prayers. Songs are sung in the company of family members. Vesak (B)(H): May 12

Vesak or Wesak is commonly referred to as Buddha Day and is acknowledged by the United Nations on the full moon in May (Vaisakha, a month of the Buddhist calendar that Hindus share). It is the day the Buddhist faith marks the dawning of the age of enlightenment known as Nirvāna. The exact date varies depending on the country and traditions; the most common date is this. Buddhists mark this day with meditation, observing the eight precepts, partaking in vegetarianism, giving to charity, and bathing Buddha statues. Traditionally, Buddhists set this day aside to bring happiness to the unfortunate, including the elderly, handicapped, and sick. They do so by distributing gifts or cash to various charitable homes nationwide. Vesak became an official Buddhist holiday in 1950; it parallels in importance the Christian celebration of Christmas and the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

The sovereign's birthday is a Canadian since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. After confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a government proclamation was issued for the celebration on May 25. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada, establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day. Today, it is marked on the Monday before her birthday to create a three-day weekend.

It is believed to help reduce cholesterol and mitigate several factors linked to a risk of heart disease. It is a natural food preservative. Vinegar is also used in cleaning both the home and wounds. Its acidity naturally kills pathogens, effectively obliterates bacteria, treats nail fungus, warts, and ear infections, and kills lice. The most common types of vinegar are balsamic, cider, malt red wine, rice, white wine, wine, and seasoned.

Vision Health Month is Canada's annual awareness campaign that educates Canadians about their vision health and helps eliminate avoidable sight loss nationwide. The most important thing Canadians can do to save sight is to get an annual optometry examination. A staggering one in seven Canadians will be diagnosed with an eye disease in their lifetime, and a comprehensive exam is the best way to prevent damage that cannot be reversed. "The earlier an eye disease is detected, the greater the chance of preventing or minimizing associated vision loss through treatment," says Dr. Lil Linton, president of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and a spokesperson for Doctors of Optometry Canada. "That's why it's so critical to get your eyes examined regularly. By the time you notice a problem, it could be too late to save your sight." The CNIB recommends the following schedule for eye exams: Infants should have their first eye exam between six and nine months of age. Children should undergo at least one eye examination between the ages of two and five and then yearly once they enter school. Adults between 19 and 64 should have an eye exam every two years. Seniors should have an eye exam annually.
