Islamophobia refers to a fear, prejudice, and hatred towards Muslims that leads to hostility, intolerance, and discrimination both online and offline. It is rooted in institutional, ideological, political, and religious hostility, often manifested through structural and cultural racism. Islamophobia targets symbols and markers associated with being Muslim and is driven by the perception that Islamic religion, tradition, and culture pose a threat to Western values. Some experts prefer the term "anti-Muslim hatred" to avoid stifling freedom of expression, but international human rights law protects individuals, not religions. Islamophobia can also affect non-Muslims based on nationality, race, or ethnicity. A report by the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief highlights that suspicion, discrimination, and outright hatred towards Muslims have reached epidemic proportions. Following terrorist attacks associated with Islam, institutional suspicion of Muslims has escalated, leading to disproportionate measures targeting them. Negative representations and stereotypes perpetuate discrimination, hostility, and violence against Muslims. Muslims often face discrimination in accessing goods, services, employment, and education, especially in countries where they are a minority. Xenophobic perceptions associate Muslims with national security and terrorism threats, leading to denial of citizenship or legal status. Muslim women are particularly vulnerable to Islamophobic hate crimes. Governments have implemented anti-hate crime legislation, prevention measures, and public awareness campaigns to combat Islamophobia. The United Nations General Assembly designated March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, emphasizing that terrorism and violent extremism should not be associated with any religion or group. The day aims to promote a culture of tolerance, peace, and respect for human rights and religious diversity. The UN Secretary-General has highlighted that Islamophobia is part of a larger trend of ethno-nationalism, neo-Nazism, and hate speech targeting vulnerable populations. In response to rising hate speech, the United Nations launched a Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Overall, addressing Islamophobia requires concerted efforts to combat discrimination, promote tolerance, and protect the rights and dignity of Muslims and all individuals affected by such prejudice.

He became the African nation’s first president, and its seventh president upon its independence. Liberia was created as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS) to provide freedom and prosperity in Africa for persons of African descent. Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847. JJ Roberts Day is a national holiday.

Joe Franklin passed away from prostate cancer on January 24, 2015.

Johnny Appleseed Day (1845): March 18*

Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds for lodging, old clothing, and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22. Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims. Both settlers and Native Americans respected Appleseed. He spoke several languages, protected the environment, and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants. The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month occurs in March in Canada and July in the United States. In Canada, approximately 61,500 children live with arthritis. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood, and it is characterized by persistent inflammation in the joints that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling. Physical activity is essential for children with arthritis. These children can develop weak muscles and low bone strength because of their condition and because they tend to be less physically active than children who don't have arthritis. The Linking Exercise, Activity, and Pathophysiology in Childhood Arthritis Canadian Collaborative Team (LEAP) studies the link between physical activity and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The work of the LEAP team will provide information and help develop safe and effective exercise programs to keep children with arthritis healthy and improve their quality of life. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is about supporting research and helping kids with arthritis be kids!

Kabaddi Day, World: March 24

Kabaddi is a contact team sport that originated in South Asia and is especially popular in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran. The sport involves two teams sending a "raider" into the opponent's half of the court to tag members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi," all in one breath. The objective for the defenders is to either evade the raider or tackle them before they can return to their half of the court. The sport is described in various ancient texts, including the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, and traces back over 4,000 years. It is one of the oldest games still in play and is believed to have originated in ancient India. The term "Kabaddi" is derived from the Tamil word "kai-pidi," which means "to hold hands." The sport includes several regional variations, including Sanjeevani, Amar, and Punjabi, with rules and styles differing from one region to another. The basic principle remains the same: two teams send a raider into the opponent's half of the court to tag or touch members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi" in a single breath. Kabaddi received international exposure when demonstrated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the Indian National Games in 1938. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity, especially in South Asia, and has become a regular feature in multi-sport events like the Asian Games. World Kabaddi Day seeks to increase the sport's appeal beyond Asia, the United Kingdom, and Canada to the rest of the world. World Kabaddi Day began in 2018 and is celebrated annually on March 24.
