Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the United States. It is the day when the slaves of Galveston, Texas, finally learn of their release from slavery. A reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and the singing of traditional African American songs continue the public celebrations. Juneteenth is a national holiday in the United States.

Just One Day, Day (2001): June 11

These animals would be dead were it not for Just One Day. Thousands of organizations in every state take part. LGBTQ Equality Day marks several Supreme Court ruling anniversaries. June 26, 2003: Lawrence v. Texas States can no longer criminalize the private conduct in which same-sex couples engage. June 26, 2013: United States v. Windsor Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. The Federal Government may longer restrict married same-sex couples from receiving Federal benefits and protections. June 26, 2015: Obergefell v. Hodges Same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, and States can no longer discriminate against same-sex couples when recognizing or licensing a marriage.

Lightning Safety Day, Intl. (2011): June 28

International Lightning Safety Day was created in 2015 to mark the anniversary of the June 28, 2011, lightning strike that killed 19 people. On June 28, 2011, a lightning strike at Runyanya Primary School in western Uganda killed 18 students and their teacher, sparking concern among officials due to a recent spate of deadly lightning strikes in the country. The incident occurred around 1630 local time while students waited inside classrooms for a downpour to cease. The police reported that the victims included 15 girls and three boys, with another 36 students admitted to the hospital for injuries. The absence of lightning rods atop several buildings, including schools and health centers, is the believed cause of the high casualty rate. Uganda's Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru, labeled the omission of lightning arrestors during construction as "negligent." He pledged to rectify the issue moving forward. Marx Kabi, a specialist at Uganda's National Forestry Authority (UNFA), highlighted another major cause of increased lightning strikes: deforestation. He noted that with fewer trees to absorb or channel lightning, most areas now covered by shrubs were more vulnerable to strikes. The incident brought the total lightning-related fatalities that week to 28.

National Little League Baseball Week began with President John F Kennedy in 1961 and is to occur on the beginning on the second Monday of June each year. The following is the presidential proclamation establishing this week. Proclamation 3407—National Little League Baseball Week April 18, 1961 By the President of the United States of America "Whereas active participation by youth in appropriate physical activities contributes to their fitness and to the maintenance of our national vigor and vitality; and Whereas Little Leagues in communities throughout the Nation have made it possible for thousands of young boys to take an active part in our national game of baseball; and Whereas Little League baseball not only promotes the physical well-being of the players, but also instills into them the qualities of fairness, cooperation, and discipline-qualities which contribute to the development of good citizenship; and Whereas the Congress, by House Concurrent Resolution 17, agreed to June 1, 1959, has requested the President to designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of each year as National Little League Baseball Week, in recognition of the national and community benefits resulting from Little League activity: Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of 1961, and the week beginning the second Monday in June of each succeeding year, as National Little League Baseball Week. And I invite the people of the United States to observe that week in schools, parks, athletic fields, and other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies and activities designed to emphasize the importance of the physical development of our Nation's youth. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.
