Cherry Tart Days, Ntl.: June 17-18

Cherry Tart Day began in Michigan during the National Cherry Festival. Although cherries were abundant, where to use this berry was very limited. Organizers thought of creating a festive day to focus on the cherry, and National Cherry Tart Day was born. Through custom, the day has migrated to June. However, the Cherry Festival still occurs in July.

Child Labor, World Day Against: June 12

World Day Against Child Labor Day is sponsored by the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC). This day seeks to raise awareness of the issue of child labor worldwide. Each year focuses on a different theme. In 2015, education as a means to stop child labor was the topic of concentration. IPEC falls under the International Labour Organization(ILO), which created this event in 1992 to eliminate child labor by providing means to countries to strengthen their efforts to combat child labor and promote global awareness of child labor. IPEC is the most extensive operation program of the International Labor Organization.

Child Victims of Aggression, World Day of (1982): June 4

World Day of Child Victims of Aggression brings to light children's suffering, particularly those who are victims of war and abuse. It is a United Nations (UN) affirmation to safeguard children's rights in peace and war. Many organizations, celebrities, and VIPs work together to affect positive action toward improving child welfare. This UN awareness campaign began on August 19, 1982, when the General Assembly observed the immense number of Palestinian and Lebanese children who had become victims of Israel's latest war on its northern neighbor. The event that shocked the world was the massacres of the Sabra neighborhood and the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. SABRA & SHATILA In concert with Phalanges Christian Lebanese militias, Israeli forces supervised and assisted in two and a half days of horror that led to the slaughter of over 3,000 people during what was supposed to be a cease-fire. The massacre is considered a war crime. Afterward, June 4 became a reminder and applied to children globally as the World Day of Child Victims of Aggression. June 4, 1982, is the anniversary of the first bombing in this war by Israel of Lebanon. It occurred two days before the official declaration and is considered the commencement of the siege of Beirut. During its first ten days, June 4-14, 1982, the International Red Cross reported 9,583 people killed and another 16,608 injured, 80 percent of whom were civilians. Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc sponsors Child Vision Awareness Month. It's a reminder to schedule your child's annual optometry exam. With over half of Americans needing glasses, contacts, or laser surgery to correct vision problems, the chances of your child developing sight issues at some point are about 50/50. Children with excellent sight can quickly go from good to bad over a few months. If you notice your child is complaining about not being able to read the whiteboard at school, he or she tends to hold books and other items close to their eyes or finds him or herself tripping over things he or she doesn't see, your child's eyesight may be the issue. During June, many charities nationwide offer reduced cost or free eye exams.

Stand for Children Day raises awareness of childcare and safety throughout the US. Over the years, advocates have used this day to rally for reforms in child care. Fairs that focus on the health and the welfare of children are held. In some locations, advocates write petition letters and hold political roundtables. Stand for Children is an advocacy group based in the United States that was founded in 1996 during the Children’s Defense Rally in Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC. Each year various activities are held throughout the country to encourage awareness.

International Children's Day was first declared in 1925 at the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland. The date varies around the world. In the United States, this event is marked as National Children's Day on the first Sunday of June, as declared by President Bill Clinton in 1998. In other countries, it can occur in May (the third Friday in May for Jamaica) or later in June. The official international date is always June 1st, and China is the largest country to celebrate this event on the first. It is a day to celebrate children's rights and focus on the joy of being a child. The United Nations sponsors a second International Children's Day on November 20th, Universal Children's Day.

Children's Day observations in the United States predate Mother's and Father's Day, and the first such was acknowledged prior to the 1860s. Since 2007, the governor of Illinois has proclaimed "Children's Day" on the second Sunday in June. Also, such cities as Aurora, Il.; Batavia, Il.; Fort Collins, Co.; Vancouver, WA.; and other American cities have issued proclamations. Numerous churches and denominations currently observe the second Sunday in June, including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The significance of the 2nd Sunday in June is its proximity to Father's Day, which occurs on the 3rd Sunday in June. There is a grassroots attempt to make National Children's Day part of the official US observance calendar. June 1 is International Children's Day, and November 20 is Universal Children's Day.

Chimborazo Day (EC): June 3

Chimborazo Day commemorates the non-active volcano representing the closest point on Earth to the Moon and the farthest point from the Earth's center. Though Mount Everest is the highest peak, in relation to the sea level, Chimborazo protrudes into space 1.5 miles further than Everest due to its location at the equator. The Earth bulges in the middle (equator), making this Ecuadorian mountain higher than the tallest mountain on Earth if seen from the Moon. Edward Whymper of England was the first to reach Chimborazo's summit on January 4, 1880. Chimborazo is a UNESCO world heritage site in the Sangay National Park of Ecuador.
