The day aims to raise awareness of a disease that many people believe is extinct, when in fact, around 210,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The first documented case occurred near 600 BC. The last Sunday in January was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul Follereau in 1953 as the third Sunday from Epiphany from the Catholic calendar. The Catholic Church then reads the story of The Gospel of Luke, where Jesus meets and heals a person with leprosy.

The ultimate goal of Manuary is to improve cure rates and quality of life for patients suffering from this disease. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Historically linked to tobacco and alcohol use, new associations link it to the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is on the rise. Head and neck cancers and their treatment can profoundly impact patient quality of life, as facial appearance, voice, breathing, and swallowing can all be compromised. Survival with contemporary treatment consisting of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy can be successful; however, up to 50% of patients with advanced cancers die from the disease.
