The One Billion Rising for Justice campaign is rapidly building upon the energy and momentum created in early 2013 when one billion activists in 207 countries came together to strike, dance, and rise to end violence against women and girls. More than 100 countries are already signed on to Rise outside courthouses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, workplaces, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, or other public spaces for justice, marking the call to end the rampant impunity that prevails globally. The expanded One Billion Rising website features activist videos, daily news updates and photos, information on joining the campaign, and much more. Individuals and organizations can get involved with One Billion Rising online by adding to the thousands already signed up. The “This is What Justice Looks Like” project launches today as a forum where activists can share their definitions of justice in the form of text, images, and video in an online collage on the campaign website. The series debuts with videos from activists in Syria, Haiti, the Philippines, and South Africa and a new monologue by Eve Ensler. Contributors are encouraged to visualize justice, harnessing their power and imagination.

It is a fundraising and education campaign gaining support from children's charities worldwide. The United States and Canada adopted the event in 2008.

Australia's Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month raises awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. During the month, patients share the stories of those affected by the disease, highlight ovarian cancer risk factors, and educate Australians on ovarian cancer diagnosis and treatment. Ovarian cancer is still the deadliest women's cancer, and unfortunately, this has not changed in 30 years. Every day in Australia, four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and three will die from the disease.

Pancake Week, Ntl.: February 26 - March 4

Preparation for Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, traditionally involved removing from one’s kitchen of rich and dairy-based foods like milk, butter, and eggs. Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) and Pancake Week evolved from this tradition. Pancakes are made with butter, milk, eggs, and flour, so using the ingredients is better than throwing them out. Pancake Week occurs during the seven days leading up to the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday, and runs concurrently with Carnaval and Mardi Gras. It is an entire week in the United States, and in the Commonwealth countries, it is the day before Ash Wednesday.

Pangolin Day, World: February 15

World Pangolin Day raises awareness about the importance and plight of the pangolins. One aspect making pangolins unique is their scales, as no other mammal has them. Quiet and diligent, pangolins range from the size of a house cat to a medium-weight dog. The eight pangolin species live in Asia and Africa and are becoming endangered due to their status as the world's most trafficked animal. These gentle and shy mammals are highly sought after in Asia for their scales and tender meat, which is expensive and considered a status symbol when eaten. Like many rare animal parts, though nothing more than keratin (the material comprising fingernails), their scales are sought for several thoroughly debunked "natural" medicines; essentially, they're killed for superstition as fingernail clippings provide the same ingredient. Not a single medical application using pangolin parts, ranging from alieving arthritis to menstrual cramps, has been scientifically proven effective. Pangolin scales are sought as good luck charms for wealth attraction and to protect from evil spirits—a use also scientifically debunked. What about the ever-present quest for male virility for which many animals, from tigers to gorillas, are sacrificed on the altar of the masculine potency myth? Men in some Asian cultures believe eating a stewed pangolin fetus enhances their sexual efficacy and vigor. It doesn't. Pangolins reproduce just one offspring a year; each fetus destroys two—the mother whose belly is sliced open and the baby inside. Pangolins, when threatened, curl up into a ball. Their scales protect them from natural predators, but their position and their passivity make them very easy to handle, abuse, and cage by humans. Though they look like an anteater, they are closely related to wolves and bears. Pangolins support the ecosystem by reducing insect populations, and their preferred food is termites. That alone is a great reason to keep pangolins around.

World Peace and Understanding Day, celebrated annually on February 23, commemorates the first meeting of Rotary International in 1905. Peppermint Patty Day: February 11

If you've ever needed an excuse to eat chocolate and peppermint, today you have it. In 1940, Henry C. Kessler began selling peppermint cream covered in a dark chocolate patty. He named it after the city of York, Pennsylvania, where he lived. It is unknown if February 11, 1940, is the day it first went on sale or was invented. It remained a regional treat until 1972 when Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company purchased Kessler's company and took the product national in 1975. In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury, which Hershey acquired in 1988.
