Mosquitos seem to really like some people, and this writer is one of them. If a mosquito is within fifty feet, I will be bit, multiple times. These little insects form the foundation of several food chains but can also be deadly. World Mosquito Day honors Dr. Ronald Ross of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's discovery of the malaria parasite in a mosquito on August 20, 1897. He received the Nobel Prize for his work in 1902. Currently, 350-500 million cases of Malaria occur worldwide each year, with over 1 million dying from the disease. The American Mosquito Control Association champions World Mosquito Day each year as a public service designed to educate people about the need for mosquito control and what each of us can do to minimize mosquito infestations around our homes and in our communities.

Pecan Pie Day, Ntl. Chocolate: August 20

National Chocolate Pecan Pie is the food celebration. A Thanksgiving and Christmas time table staple, pecan pie was first baked by the French in New Orleans. However, it was Native Americans who first introduced pecans to the French. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that you had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!"

Radio Day, Intl. (1920): August 20

International Radio Day marks the anniversary of 8MK (WWJ) radio Detroit's first broadcast on August 20, 1920. It was what we'd call a 'beta test,' not really for public consumption. But, it was the first. The station would officially go live with the first radio newscast on August 31, 1920. At the time, creating a for-profit business in the newly emerging radio industry was a radical idea. News Radio was officially born! A few months later November 25, 1920, the first live sportscast occurred on WTAW, a college station in central Texas. August 28, 1922, saw the first paid radio commercial on New York's WEAF for apartments in Jackson Heights. However, the first public radio broadcast occurred in New York City on January 13, 1910. Though a historical anniversary, in 2013, Sabrina Roach of Brown Paper Ticket's Doer's Program made an effort to have this day marked internationally. Today, radio stations globally celebrate International Radio Day. The radio itself as an invention occurred through the efforts of multiple people. With its complex transmission and reception methods, different technologies were involved in its development, as were various inventors.

Reading and Leeds Festivals (UK): August 20-24

If you're into rock, indie, punk, and metal, the Reading and Leeds Festival is the place to be. It's two cities, on in the north (Leeds) and one in the south (Reading), with simultaneous festivals. The Reading Festival is one of the oldest popular music festivals in the world. It originated in the early 1960s as the National Jazz Festival, but the focus shifted to rock and alternative music over time. The Leeds Festival is a bit younger and was added in 1999 due to the high demand and the Reading Festival's capacity limitations. They're held simultaneously over the bank holiday weekend in August, and they share the same bill, alternating the lineup between the two sites. Over the years, these festivals have hosted some of the biggest names in rock and alternative music, including Nirvana, Metallica, Arctic Monkeys, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The lineups are always solid. Like most festivals, camping is a big part of the experience. The fields around each are filled with tents, music blasting from multiple stages, and groups of friends laughing, singing, and just having a good time. The festivals span three days, from Friday to Sunday, with campers able to arrive from the Wednesday before. Most festival-goers choose to camp on-site. Food options are pretty varied. You've got your typical festival food stands, but there's also a decent selection of international cuisines, vegan and vegetarian options. Both Reading and Leeds Festivals offer an unforgettable weekend of music and camaraderie. Cute note from the writer: When I first visited the UK, I stayed in Devon. We traveled down the M4 and passed the "Reading rest area." My comment to my friend was, "Oh, that is so sweet! You have reading rest stops in England, so you can stop a bit and enjoy a novel." He nearly died laughing. Of course, in England, Reading is pronounced "Redding" and has nothing to do with books. But this West Coast US girl didn't know that at the time. I still smile every time I hear the city's name. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Sidi Mohammed ben Yusef, Sultan Mohammed V of Morroco, was exiled on this day in 1953 by the French colonial authorities. The Morrocan people rose in protest and took to the streets. Their protests forced the sultan to abdicate in 1955, temporarily. However, he regained the throne by negotiating with the French to vacate their colonial rule. Upon independence, King Mohammed V ruled Morroco from 1957 until he died in 1961. Revolution of the King and People Day is a national holiday.

They're pollinators, control insect populations, and are a vital part of the ecosystem. As part of International Bat Night, there are bat walk events and bat talks, usually near dusk. International Bat Night is sponsored by various global bat groups and the Bat Conservation Trust. UNEP/EuroBats created the original event in 1996 in Bonn, Germany, which is now celebrated worldwide.
