In 1920, this was the day women gained the right to vote in the US. Created in 2007 by Claude Vorilhon's Nevada-based GoTopless, women are encouraged not to wear shirts and bras, and men are encouraged to wear brassieres. Vorilhon is also the leader of the Raël, a UFO religion.

On this day in 79AD that Italy's Mount Vesuvius erupted, violently destroying the city of Pompeii and several surrounding towns. The mountain remained active for the next 1500 years, erupting periodically. Vesuvius is perhaps the most famous volcanic eruption in history. It happened so quickly that residents in the city of Pompeii were encased in ash and the outline of their bodies remained intact. They were discovered in 1748 by a surveying engineer and have provided a unique look into life during Roman times.

Every August since 1985, competitors from around the globe descend upon Britain's smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales, for a competition stuck in the mire: the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. The hamlet created the event as a novel fundraiser for a local community center; since the World Bog Snorkeling Championships have grown into an international attraction. Competitors, wearing snorkels and flippers and often dressed in outlandish costumes, are tasked with completing two consecutive lengths of a water-filled trench cut through a peat bog using only flipper power—no conventional swimming strokes are allowed. The 60-yard (55-meter) race attracts around 170 participants each year from nations as varied as Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Eire/Ireland, Finland, Poland, South Africa, and the US, testing their endurance, strength, and tolerance for cold, murky waters in an event that is as entertaining to watch as challenging to compete in. In addition to individual races, there are also categories for juniors, relay teams, and even a fancy dress competition, which adds to the festival-like atmosphere of the day. Additional activities and refreshments include food and drink stalls, crafts, a bouncy castle, live music, and an ale and cider bar. The World Bog Snorkeling Championships draw spectators and participants from far and wide, making it one of the most unusual and eagerly anticipated events in the British sporting calendar. Banana Split Day (1904): August 25

Banana Split Day celebrates one of the most decadent desserts of all time, the banana split. The Banana Split was introduced at the Tassell Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on August 25, 1904, it is believed. Whether this is the actual date cannot be confirmed. What is known is that 23-year-old pharmacist David Evans Strickler created the banana split that summer for the pharmacy's soda fountain to out-sundae other soda shops. It sold for a whopping 10 cents, twice the cost of other fountain treats. The original banana split continues to be served in Latrobe restaurants (long after soda fountains faded from glory) courtesy of Valley Dairy restaurants since 1938. A banana split is assembled on a dish called a boat. A banana is split into two lengthwise and placed on each side. Scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream are added in the middle. Toppings like pineapple on the strawberry ice cream, a drizzle of chocolate syrup on the vanilla, and strawberry toppings on chocolate are the usual add-ons. Garnishes include slivers of almonds, whipped cream, and cherries complete the whole thing. The banana split had its 100th birthday in 2004.
