Radha Ashtami (H): August 31

06:20 AM | -
Radha Ashtami (Radha Jayanti) celebrates the birthday of Radha, the goddess of love and the companion of Krishna. Depictions include renderings of a milkmaid and the embodiment of the soul. Radha Ashtami falls on the Asthami tithi during Shuka Paksha of the Hindu month Bhadrapada (Bhado). Devotees fast during the day and worship Radha. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

American Artist Appreciation Month (1928): August

06:20 AM | -
AMERICAN ARTIST APPRECIATION MONTH: CELEBRATING CREATIVE EXCELLENCE Each August, American Artist Appreciation Month is observed to honor and recognize the contributions of American artists to the cultural and artistic landscape. This month-long celebration, established in 2016 by art enthusiasts and cultural organizations, aims to highlight the importance of American art and its impact on the global stage. It marks Andy Warhol's birthday, August 6, 1928, and the birthdays of 13 other famous American artists. FAMOUS AMERICAN ARTISTS The United States has produced many renowned artists who have left an indelible mark on the art world. Among them are iconic figures such as Georgia O'Keeffe, known for her stunning depictions of flowers and southwestern landscapes; Jackson Pollock, a pioneer of abstract expressionism; Andy Warhol, a leading figure in the pop art movement; and Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose work blends graffiti with abstract art. These artists, among many others, have helped shape American art into a dynamic and influential force. American Artist Appreciation Month is important because it fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of the diverse artistic expressions that reflect the nation's history, culture, and social issues. This celebration encourages the public to explore the rich heritage of American art, visit museums and galleries, and support contemporary artists. It also provides an opportunity to educate younger generations about the significance of art in society and its role in shaping national identity. UNIQUENESS OF AMERICAN ART American art is distinct in its ability to reflect the country's unique cultural diversity and historical experiences of a melting pot society. Unlike art from many other countries, which often adhere to long-standing traditions and techniques, American art stands out for its innovation and eclecticism. It frequently incorporates elements from various cultural influences, resulting in a vibrant and evolving artistic landscape. From the realism of the 19th century to the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, American artists have continually pushed the boundaries of creativity and expression. WHERE TO CELEBRATE Cultural organizations, art museums, and galleries across the country spearheaded the initiative behind American Artist Appreciation Month. These entities collaborate to promote events, exhibitions, and educational programs that celebrate the achievements of American artists and inspire new generations of creators. As American Artist Appreciation Month grows in recognition, it serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to connect, inspire, and transform society. Back-to-School Month: August

06:20 AM | -
BACK-TO-SCHOOL MONTH IN NORTH AMERICA: PREPARING FOR A NEW ACADEMIC YEAR Every August, families across North America prepare for the start of the new academic year, marking the annual observance of Back-to-School Month. This period, designated to prepare students and parents for the return to classrooms, has been a longstanding tradition in the region, stretching back to the early 20th century. TRADITION The practice of returning to school in August or early September is deeply rooted in the historical agricultural calendar. In the 19th century, schools scheduled a long summer break to allow children to assist with farming during the crucial planting and harvesting seasons. This tradition, born out of necessity, has persisted, providing students and teachers with a much-needed break and time for family vacations. In North America, the end of summer and the beginning of August signal the start of a flurry of activities aimed at preparing for the school year. These include purchasing school supplies, enrolling in extracurricular activities, and adjusting to new routines. Retailers also recognize August as a key period for back-to-school sales, making it a significant month for economic activity related to education. BACK-TO-SCHOOL AROUND THE GLOBE Not all countries adhere to the same school calendar. In many European nations, the school year begins in September, while in parts of Asia and Australia, the academic year may start as early as January or as late as April. Regional climates, cultural traditions, and historical factors influence the variations in start dates. IMPACT OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL MONTH A single entity does not officially sponsor back-to-school month; instead, it is a cultural and societal marker acknowledged by educational institutions, retailers, and families. School districts across North America typically set their specific start dates. Still, the collective anticipation and preparation during August create a unified sense of renewal and readiness for learning, fostering a shared experience among all involved. This month-long observance underscores the importance of education and its pivotal role in shaping the future. It also reminds us of the communal effort required to support students' academic journeys, from parents and teachers to local businesses and policymakers. As students don their backpacks and head to classrooms, Back to School Month encapsulates the excitement and promise of a new beginning, fostering a sense of optimism and hope in all involved.

Black August (1971): August

06:20 AM | -
Black August recognizes the contributions of living and past black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and black revolutionaries who challenge the status quo for equal rights. The month falls on the anniversary of the death of George Lester Jackson (September 23, 1941 – August 21, 1971). Jackson was a member of the Black Panther movement in the 1960s, a prison gang leader, a radical advocate for prisoner rights, and a murderer. He often used violence to make his points. Jackson died while holding and killing five hostages during an attempted prison escape at California's San Quentin prison. Jackson documented his time in Soledad Prison in the book "Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson," which brought him global attention.

Boomers Making a Difference Month: August

06:20 AM | -
Until the 21st Century, Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, were the largest generation the world had ever seen. They earned their name due to the 'baby boom' ensuing as soldiers worldwide returned home from WWII. Boomers are split into two groups: Premier baby boomers from 1945-1954 and secondary boomers from 1955-1964. Boomers Making a Difference Month, first run in 2010, highlights the contributions of the Baby Boomers to society.

Braham Pie Day (US-MN): August 1

06:20 AM | -
Braham is the homemade pie capitol of Minnesota, and Pie Day is how the state shows off. You'll find baking competitions, a lot of pies, a car show, live music and vendors from all over the state demonstrating products and services. The Braham Pie day draws over 5,000 people annually. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.
