The idea behind this event is believed to have originated in New Zealand during the free love and hippie years of the 1970s.

Nude Recreation Week: July 6-12

Lee Baxandall, a naturist and strong advocate for nude beaches beginning in the 1970s founded The Naturist Society (TNS). August 7, 1976, and inaugurated National Nude Beach Day. In 1992, TNS oversaw the expansion of the weekend event into the seven-day Nude Recreation Week. The event has occurred every year, with various organizations holding several occasions, from trying to break the Skinny Dipping Record to nude days at multiple parks, clubs, and beaches. The first king of Norway, a Viking, was Olaf II Haraldsson, affectionately referred to as St. Olaf. He is the patron saint of the nation. Born in 955AD, he reigned over Norway from 1015 - 1028. He was forced to abandon the crown and flee to Russia. He died in the battle of Stiklestad on July 29, 1030AD. His feast day is celebrated each year in Norway with festivities and bonfires.

Ommegang Pageant (BE): July 1-3 (est)

The Ommegang Pageant in Brussels, Belgium, includes a historical reenactment of the feast given June 2, 1549, by the Magistrate of Brussels in honor of Emperor Charles V, his son Philipe, Duke of Brabant and his sisters, Mary, Queen of Hungary and Eleanor, Queen of France, widow of François I, on the Grand Place of Brussels. It is an opportunity for people to experience medieval life as it once was throughout the festivities. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Orangemen's Day (UK)(1690): July 12

In Northern Ireland, July 12 is the Orangemen’s Day. Otherwise known as The Glorious Twelfth, this is a bank holiday celebrated Monday when it falls on a weekend. It commemorates the Battle of Boyne. Public offices, businesses, and transport services are on special holiday timetables, and marches organized by the Lodges of the Orange Order are held. March participants dress in suits with black bowler hats, white gloves, and collarettes, usually in orange and draped around the neck to form a V-shape. Collarets indicate the lodge number and position of the wearer. The Battle of the Boyne occurred on July 1, 1690, near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland between the forces of King James VII of Scotland and James II of England. Prince William of Orange, who later became King William III, emerged the victor. At its base, the Battle of the Boyne is the struggle between Catholics and Protestants for Ireland, with Prince William of Orange representing the latter and King James, the former. The actual battle did not happen on July 12 but on July 1. The dates differ today because the Gregorian Calendar replaced the Julian calendar in 1752.

They carry groceries, provide easy gift wrapping, hold fried or popped food, and can even calm us down when we're hyperventilating. They are a fantastic invention first created by Francis Wolle on August 16, 1852, and perfected by Margaret E. Knight with U.S. Patent 116,842 (Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines, July 11, 1871.) July 11 is the anniversary of the square bottom paper bag used worldwide and is, therefore, International Paper Bag Day. It is also a celebration of female inventors, of which Ms. Knight excelled.
