Daiquiri Day, Ntl.: July 19

National Daiquiri Day celebrates the Cuban invention, the daiquiri, a rum-based drink with lime juice, sugar, and crushed ice. There are two versions of how the daiquiri came to be. VERSION ONE An American mining engineer named Jennings Cox, in Cuba during the Spanish American War, is rumored to have created it and called the beverage after the town of Daiquiri near Santiago, Cuba. In 1902 US Congressman William Chanler brought the drink back to New York. World War II would become the catalyst in taking the daiquiri to the height of popularity. Rum was easy to get in the US then, but vodka and whisky were not. VERSION TWO Constantino Ribalaigua, a bartender at El Floridita in Havana, created the daiquiri. Ribalaigua is said to have been inspired by Earnest Hemingway. This rendition is doubtful due to the timing. However, Hemingway did list the daiquiri as one of his favorite drinks, calling it the ‘Papa double.’ The original cocktail was created by filling a tall glass with cracked ice, sprinkling it with sugar, and then squeezing the juice of 2 limes over the ice, followed by a shot (or two) of white rum. As time progressed, the daiquiri became mixed in a shaker. The modern version uses a blender to mix all the ingredients into a slushy drink, presented with a tiny umbrella garnish.

In Hinduism, Ekadashi is an important observance, with two occurring annually. The focus is the worship of Lord Vishnu. Devotees show reverence by partial fasting. They abstain from grains, beans, cereals, certain vegetables like onions, and specific spices. Devshayani Ekadeshi (Shayani Ekadashi / Maha-ekadashi / Prathama-ekadashi / Padma Ekadashi) is the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha within the Hindu month of Ashadha. Ashadha corresponds to June – July of the Gregorian calendar. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Disabilities Dignity (Pride) Month: July

Disability Dignity Month focuses on the 30% of Americans with a physical or mental disability. It celebrates the unique culture of various disability communities and their achievements. Advocates hope to teach the general population to avoid terms considered ableist. Ableist language uses common words tied to a disability that can be seen in a derogatory context. Examples include saying retarded instead of mentally impaired. Blind instead of saying vision impaired, or dumb instead of mute. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Due to the anniversary, July is chosen as Disability Dignity Month; some refer to this event as Disability Pride Month.
