Kraken Day, World: October 11

Who said scientists don't have a sense of humor? World Kraken Day is about celebrating cephalopods in literature and mythology. Two examples are the giant squid from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne and the Kraken of Scandinavian mythology (often summoned by Nordic gods and, more recently, by discredited American attorneys). The Kraken first appeared in an Icelandic story called Örvar-Oddr in the 13th century AD. The most recent cephalopod to gain fame in entertainment is the octopus in the 2021 Academy Award-winning Best Documentary from South Africa, "My Octopus Friend." Cephalopods are a species of marine animals and include squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. There are over 800 species worldwide, and they've been with us for over 300,000 years. Marine scientists celebrate International Cephalopods Awareness Days in October as a teaching tool and a call for marine environmental preservation.

Labour Day in Australia is a National Holiday. Still, it is a bit complicated as each territory has its day to celebrate, which can occur in March, May, and October. Labour Day represents the international celebration of organized labor and was conceived first in North America. A conference of American and Canadian unions in 1884 declared May 1, 1886, as a day of strike action in support of the 8-hour day. In Chicago, a crowd of 80,000 workers were attacked by police, and six workers were gunned down. In subsequent protests, another 11 workers were killed. A further seven workers were arrested, four hanged, and a fifth killed himself to cheat the noose. Two others received life sentences. In Australia, the "Sydney Morning Herald" reported in 1890 that in Vienna, the wealthy business owners and elites were so unnerved by worker support for May Day that they placed their valuables in banks' custody. Two years earlier, Australian workers rallied to the cause of British dockworkers during the famous 'Dockers strike' of 1888. Of $48,000 contributed from overseas, more than $30,000 was sent by Australian workers. In 1891 squatters in Queensland determined to break the 'Shearers union' employed scab labor. The Shearers truck and the Queensland government sent police and armed troops to arrest strikers and put them in goal. The call for an International May Day was only partly heeded due to ideological splits in the trade union movement. May Day has gathered in strength in Australia and is now part of the worldwide celebration. However, Australia's territories also maintain their state-supported Labour Day.

Lead poisoning continues to be a severe problem, especially in older buildings where paint peels and children often eat it. It can also be present in the dust and inhaled, in soil, water and air. Working with batteries is the most common way adults are exposed. Lead poisoning leads to mental and physical development problems, especially in children under six, it can be fatal. International Lead Poisoning Week of Action is a global call to remove the sources of lead poisoning and educate the public about its dangers and prevention.

October was designated in the United States as Learning Disabilities Month in 1985 through a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan. Learning Disabilities Association of Canada followed suit up north in 1987. Though no longer part of the national health calendar in either nation, it continues to be supported by several organizations and nonprofits throughout both countries. Learning Disabilities Month is a time to educate and inform the public of all that those with disabilities can do and how to support those struggling with learning disabilities in success.

Leif Ericsson Day (1001 CE): October 9

THE MAN WHO DISCOVERED AMERICA: LEIF ERICSSON Leif Ericsson, also known as Leif the Lucky, was a Norse explorer from Iceland and is often credited as the first European to set foot on North American soil, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Born around 970 AD, Leif was the son of Erik the Red, the founder of the first Norse settlements in Greenland. His explorations were part of the Viking expansion across the North Atlantic, which included Iceland, Greenland, and beyond. Leif's most significant voyage occurred around 1001 CE when he sailed west from Greenland and reached a land he called Vinland, in present-day Newfoundland, Canada. This journey is documented in the Icelandic sagas, specifically the "Saga of the Greenlanders" and the "Saga of Erik the Red." According to the sagas, Vinland was named for the wild grapes found in the area and described as a fertile land with plentiful resources. Leif's discovery of Vinland, which predates other European explorations of the New World by centuries, is a significant milestone in history. While the Vikings did not establish permanent settlements in North America, they briefly inhabited areas along the coast and engaged in trade with Indigenous peoples, thereby influencing the course of European exploration. Leif Ericsson, a pioneering explorer, is celebrated for his journey that marked the farthest reach of the Norse expansion. His legacy is honored annually in the United States on October 9th, known as Leif Erikson Day. Though less widely known than later explorers like Columbus, Leif's achievements continue to inspire, serving as a testament to the daring and adventurous spirit of the Viking age. Architecture has a long and rich history, evolving from ancient structures like the Egyptian pyramids and Greek temples to modern skyscrapers and eco-friendly buildings. Key architectural movements include Classical architecture, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Modernism, and Postmodernism, each influencing the aesthetics and functionality of buildings across different eras. These movements have shaped physical spaces and cultural identities, symbolizing technological advancements and societal values.

Leon Day, Day (1916): October 30

Leon Day celebrates Leon Day (October 30, 1916 - March 13, 1995), one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time. He played in the Negro Leagues between 1934-1949. On July 23, 1942, Day struck out 18 players from the Baltimore Elite Giants, setting the record for the league. Leon fought for the US military during WWII and continued his career in baseball by pitching a no-hitter on opening day in 1946. Day received induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Today is the anniversary of his birth.
