International Menopause Society hosts World Menopause Day on October 18 and World Menopause Month. A woman is in menopause when it has been 365 since her last menstrual cycle. Most women enter menopause in the late forties to early fifties, though it can happen in a woman’s thirties or sixties. Menopause is preceded by several years of fluctuating hormones and various physical symptoms, including dry skin, hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, night sweats, insomnia, and difficulty with libido.

The week of October 10 is National Metric Week. The United States is one of only three countries worldwide that does not use the metric system as its official measurement unit; the other two are Myanmar and Liberia. The metric system uses units of measure divisible by ten. These include millimeters, centimeters, kilometers, meters, liters, Celsius, and kilograms. The US uses inches, feet, yards, miles, gallons, Fahrenheit, and pounds. National Metrics Week is an opportunity for American citizens to learn the metric system, thus preparing them for a global economy.

Why Celebrate Migratory Birds? Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats, and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can tremendously contribute to maintaining healthy bird populations. By modeling what can be done and involving people, their interest and involvement in stewardship can grow. One of the most successful vehicles for public education on migratory birds is International Migratory Bird Day(IMBD). Mincemeat Day, Ntl.: October 26

National Mincemeat Day celebrates mincemeat, a mixture of finely chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits, spices, and sometimes suet (hard fat from beef, lamb, or venison). Alcohol and spices preserve the mincemeat, allowing the harvest to be stored and consumed for up to a decade. During Prohibition, in October 1922, the Old Victory Distillery in Chicago was able to get an exemption to the liquor laws for culinary arts. Mincemeat pies were one of the foods consumed to circumvent the Volstead Act by savvy gourmets, and they helped keep distilleries in business. Mincemeat originated in Palestine, and the spices used came to Europe during the Crusades. It is a spicy, sweet, and savory filling, customarily baked in a pastry and served for dinner or after the main course. Around the late 1700s, it became associated with the holiday season. In the United States, pumpkin, pecan, and mincemeat pies are associated with either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Today's mincemeat may or may not include suet, created instead from finely chopped dried fruits, nuts, and spirits.

Missouri Day Festival and High School Band Competition (US-MO): October 18-19

The Trenton Marching Band Festival is part of the Missouri Day Festival. For over 30 years, the community in and around Trenton has celebrated Missouri Day on the third weekend of October. Over the years, this hometown festival has grown to become a destination for thousands of people to enjoy such attractions as craft, car, quilt, baby shows, and many vendors and concessions. It is truly a "Fair" atmosphere enjoyed by all who attend. And don't forget the Band festival that has grown from the original 18 participating bands in 1997 to nearly 60 bands in recent years and the exciting Parade that kicks off Saturday's festivities! PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Mole Day brings awareness to a numerical equation. Celebrated by chemists, chemistry students, and science enthusiasts, it commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power), a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Hence, the date and the exact time of celebration: 6:02 10/23 in the American style of writing dates. The date also falls during National Chemistry Week, an annual event that unites the American Chemical Society, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry in everyday life. Avogadro's Number defines the quantity of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole of a substance. A Mole is one of the seven base International System of Units (SI) measurements. Mole Day in schools and universities motivates students' interest in chemistry; various activities, games, and competitions are organized that explore chemistry and moles. Annual awards on Mole Day include the George Hague Memorial Travel Award and the Mole of the Year Award. NMDF was created on May 15, 1991, by Maurice Oehler, a former high school chemistry teacher from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
