Albie Awards (US-NY): September 26 (est)

Initiated in 2022, The Albie Awards recognizes leaders in the global justice movement. The awards are created by George and Amal Clooney's Foundation for Justice and named after Justice Albie Sachs of South Africa. Sachs endeavored to end apartheid at significant risk to himself and those he loved. Calls for sanctions, boycotts, and divestment from South Africa due to its apartheid regime began in the 1950s. Like calls today to end apartheid, the position was not popular worldwide. Those seeking to force an end to South African apartheid peacefully were often maligned in the press, accused of racism, imprisoned, and targeted for revenge. For Albie and South Africa, the tide would change with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991. Suddenly, the idea of not purchasing products and services from a country that treated half of its people as second-class citizens by forcing them to live in segregated areas and denying them equal rights was no longer acceptable. Nor was it financially and politically beneficial for global politicians to support that country as long as it continued the practice. By 1992, the business community in South Africa was feeling the pain, and they took action, helping lead the nation out of apartheid and into the peaceful multi-racial democracy it is today. Once apartheid ended, investment and trade returned, South Africa gained renewed status internationally, and divestment, sanctions, and boycotts were relegated to its history. Mission accomplished—after 38 years of trying.

Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival, Custer, (US-SD): September 26-28 (est)

The Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival and Craft Show features 150 exhibitors selling Native American and Western Arts and Crafts and South Dakota Made Products. Dancers, music, and poets provide full-on entertainment with educational programs throughout the weekend. The second day features the annual Buffalo Roundup, in which 1300 bison are branded before the auction. Each day starts with a pancake breakfast; buffalo burgers, brats, and chili are available throughout the day. This event first ran in 1965.

Lumberjack Day: September 26

Lumberjack Day (aka National Pancake Day) was invented in 2005 by Marianne Ways and Colleen AF Venable as an excuse to eat a TON of pancakes and waffles with friends. The women were sick of pirate-themed parties after the famous "Talk Like a Pirate Day." They created Lumberjack Day to change the tone. Over the years, Lumberjack Day has grown, and more people are celebrating, getting dressed up in plaid and beards (or sometimes even as giant pancakes or trees or oxen!), carrying fake axes, and throwing colossal lumberjack-themed parties.

US/Iran first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (US/IR)(2013): September 26

The US and Iran's first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (Persia) happened on September 26, 2013. The two nations dissolved diplomatic ties after the Shah's overthrow and the US Embassy's seizure in Iran by student radicals in 1979. The United States CIA and British MI-6 had led a coup in 1953, which overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. At the time, Iran was one of the region's most progressive, pro-Western nations and considered a bridge between Europe and Asia. With the installation of the Shah in Iran, the people's mood toward the west changed. He was a repressive and ostentatious leader and engendered hatred in his people. Leading up to and upon his overthrow in 1979, political leanings in the region moved in an anti-West, anti-American direction. The most notable manifestation of this was the arrival of austere, highly conservative interpretations of Islam becoming the norm throughout the Arabian Peninsula and Persia in both Shi'a and Sunni nations. In May 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the treaty agreed to with Iran, resulting from this historic meeting. In 2022, the nations of Europe, Iran, and the United States seek to repair and reinvigorate the treaty that Iran obeyed and the United States violated.
