Jazz Festival, NN North Sea (NL): July 10-12

06:20 AM | -
NN NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL RETURNS TO ROTTERDAM FOR 50TH-ANNIVERSARY EDITION The NN North Sea Jazz Festival, one of Europe’s best-known jazz gatherings and a staple of the Dutch summer calendar, will return to Rotterdam Ahoy for the festival’s 50th anniversary. The three-day indoor festival is produced by Mojo Concerts (a Live Nation company) and stages a broad mix that extends beyond straight-ahead jazz into adjacent sounds such as soul, blues, and contemporary crossover programming. In its own history notes, the festival traces its roots to 1976 in The Hague, when it launched with six venues, roughly 300 artists and about 9,000 visitors, featuring celebrated performers including Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz. The event is officially presented under the name “NN North Sea Jazz Festival,” reflecting its title sponsor, NN Group, which the festival previously described as entering a multi-year partnership that placed the sponsor in the event’s name. The festival’s partners list also includes organizations tied closely to the host city and its international profile, such as the Port of Rotterdam, along with additional festival supporters. For attendees, the draw is scale and variety: multiple stages and a packed schedule that turns Rotterdam Ahoy into an all-day circuit of performances, food areas, and late-night sets. Rotterdam Ahoy’s event listing describes the festival’s genre-spanning mix and positions it as a major summer highlight returning to the venue for the 2026 edition. Participation is straightforward: fans typically choose single-day tickets or weekend options, then build personal schedules around the daily running order and stage timetables once the lineup and timetable are released. The festival’s official FAQ confirms the July 10–12, 2026 dates, and its ticketing page also references the same 2026 weekend. While the lineup details for 2026 may roll out in stages, the festival’s milestone year offers a clear hook for programming that can spotlight legacy artists, contemporary headliners, and new voices—often a North Sea Jazz hallmark. The festival’s own “About” page emphasizes its origin story and early ambition to place internationally known jazz figures alongside Dutch and European innovators, a blend that continues to shape its identity. Organizers point visitors to official channels for updates and practical information, including guidance that the event is produced by Mojo Concerts and provides a central email contact for inquiries.

Joke Day, Intl.: July 1

06:20 AM | -
International Joke Day occurs each year in July and is an opportunity for people to joke around or share the jokes they have collected over the years. Though International Joke Day began in the United States, the tradition of telling jokes originated with the Greeks. A man named Palamedes is credited with articulating the first joke. International Joke Day differs from April Fool’s Day; The latter happens every April and is about pranking. International Joke Day is about laughing at wit and delivery rather than hazing.

Jousting, Torneo della Quintana (IT): July 11

06:20 AM | -
ITALY'S TORNEO DELLA QUINTANA: A HISTORIC JOUSTING SPECTACLE The Torneo della Quintana, a historic jousting tournament, is a significant cultural event held annually in Foligno, Italy. The tournament dates back to the 17th century, with the first recorded event occurring in 1613. The Quintana was originally a military exercise designed to train knights in lance skills, but it has evolved into a grand celebration of history and community. During the month-long event, two jousts are held, one on the second Saturday of July and the second on the final day of the tournament in early August. These events draw thousands of local and international spectators who gather to witness the vibrant pageantry and thrilling competition. The tournament occurs in the Campo de li Giochi, an arena designed for the Quintana. Participants, known as knights, represent the ten districts (rioni) of Foligno, each donning elaborate costumes and riding beautifully adorned horses. The goal is to gallop at full speed and pierce a ring suspended from a rotating statue with a lance, demonstrating precision and skill. Behind the scenes, the Ente Autonomo Giostra della Quintana, a non-profit organization, orchestrates the event. This body works tirelessly to preserve the historical integrity and ensure the tournament's smooth operation. The event also involves the community, with locals participating in various roles, from organizing committees to performing in parades and reenactments. The Quintana is more than just a tournament; it is a vibrant celebration of Foligno's heritage, bringing together history, culture, and community spirit. Each edition reaffirms the town's dedication to preserving its past while engaging the present, making the Torneo della Quintana a cherished tradition that continues to captivate and inspire.

15th of Av (J): July 29

06:20 AM | -
Love, glorious love! The 15th of Av is a holiday in the Jewish faith, often referred to as the Jewish Valentine's day, and it is a celebration of love and future redemption. The tradition comes from The Talmud, a collection of books teaching Jewish law (Gemara) and the oral traditions (Mishnah) inscribed between the third and fifth centuries of the common era (CE). It is an encyclopedic collection used in Rabbinic Talmudism (Judaism as practiced after the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE). The Talmud describes this night as a time when young Hebrew maidens would dance in the vineyards, and any man seeking a bride could go there and find one. For this reason, the 15th of Av is called Jewish Valentine's Day.

21 to Drink Day (1984): July 17

06:20 AM | -
Mother's Against Drunk Driving officially lobbied for and passed the national law making the sale and public consumption of alcohol illegal to persons under the age of 21, July 17, 1984. Before this, many states had the legal drinking age at 18. According to the organization, the change in legal age saves over 1,000 lives each year.

7-7 London Bombing (2005): July 7

06:20 AM | -
Three years into the 'War on Terror,' the United Kingdom experienced its day of horror on July 7, 2005. Today is the anniversary of that event known as 7/7. It was a beautiful day in central London when four suicide bombers, in coordinated attacks using public transportation, killed 52 people and injured over 770 during the morning rush hour. Three bombs detonated in London's subway system, two outside Liverpool Street and Edgware Road stations. The third exploded between King's Cross and Russell Square in London. The last suicide bomber, the fourth, detonated on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square. Photograph: 7th July Memorial in Hyde Park, London Chris Dorney | Dreamstime.com

Agitágueda Art Festival (PT): July 4-26

06:20 AM | -
RAINBOW UMBRELLAS AND RHYTHM: THE AGITÁGUEDA ART FESTIVAL IS PORTUGUESE CREATIVITY Just south of Porto, Portugal, Águeda erupts in color, heralding the widely acclaimed Agitágueda Art Festival's return for its summer run. Born in 2006 amid the town's celebration of the FIFA World Cup, the festival has grown beyond its roots in sports to become a fixture of Portuguese culture and creativity. Initially a modest event featuring music and local artists, it quickly evolved. In 2011, it introduced its now‑iconic "Umbrella Sky Project," suspending thousands of vibrant umbrellas above the town's narrow streets, offering shade and spectacle. The umbrellas transformed the urban landscape, earning Águeda global attention and inspiring similar installations worldwide. In subsequent years, additional projects, including the floating balloon canopies and bubble installations, added layers of whimsy and ingenuity. The festival's appeal stems from its fusion of visual artistry, music, street performances, exhibitions, and artisan markets. Agitáguent's free concerts showcase a blend of established and emerging talent at the riverfront and central square venues called "Talentos AgitÁgueda." In addition to its open-air canopy art, the town's benches and stairways are painted in vivid hues, and large-scale installations echo the city's industrial history—including bicycle manufacturing. Beyond art, the festival nurtures the local economy, drawing thousands of participants—estimated at around 3,000 annually. Its free admission policy invites a broad demographic of families, music lovers and art enthusiasts. From its modest beginnings as a soccer‑themed celebration, Agitágueda continues to challenge the artistic spotlight—transforming the city's streets and the global perception of urban art. As the festival brochure puts it, July in Águeda is "a feast for the senses and a source of national pride."

Air Conditioning Appreciation Days: July 3-August 15

06:20 AM | -
Think of how life would be without air conditioning. It is a scary thought! The Romans were the first to attempt air conditioning, using fans held by slaves, water via aqueducts, and designing buildings with breezeways. The Persian and Arab worlds further perfected the use of architecture to create breezes. Electricity would finally make air conditioning possible, first with a fan and then via Willis Carrier's 1902 invention, a water-cooled, coiled air conditioner. Like many inventions, he didn't realize what he had for over a decade. His purpose was to reduce humidity in his print shop, and it did that, but he soon realized it could do much more. In 1922, he created the first room chiller debuting over Memorial Day weekend in 1925 with the first artificially cooled commercial venue, the Rivoli Theater in Times Square. Suddenly, places considered virtually unlivable, like the desert Southwest, areas of the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Australia, were suddenly attractive. Air conditioning made it possible, but it would take a while. In the 1960s, only 10% of homes had air conditioning in the United States. By 2007, 86% would have it. Cities including Phoenix, Dubai, Riyadh, and Sydney would not be the powerhouses they are today without air conditioning. Air conditioning changed demographics throughout the world. As the dog days of summer set in, please take this opportunity to be thankful for that cool breeze that allows us to work, sleep and make the most out of the hot (and often humid) summer months. John C Nash created Air Conditioning Appreciation Days.

Albariño Day and Festival (ES): July 29-August 2 (est)

06:20 AM | -
ALBARIÑO DAY CELEBRATING THE GRAPE AND THE WINE Albariño Day celebrates the Albariño grape and its renowned white wines, with roots deeply embedded in Galicia’s rich wine culture. It traces its origins back to a 1952 contest between two local winemakers—Bernardo Quintanilla and Ernesto Zárate—who challenged each other to determine the best Albariño of the year. The friendly rivalry led to the first official celebration in 1953. At the heart of Albariño Day is the Festa do Albariño—a weeklong festival held in Cambados, Pontevedra, culminating on the first Sunday of August. Attracting over 150,000 people annually, activities include wine tastings at casetas, musical performances, parades, sporting events, fireworks, and official ceremonies led by the Capítulo Serenísimo do Viño Albariño, which honors outstanding contributors to the region’s wine tradition. Participants engage by sampling a variety of Albariños, joining peñas (wine clubs) in festive attire, and taking part in tastings and workshops. The event celebrates not only the wine’s distinctive citrus-floral profile but also Galician cultural identity and heritage. Critically important, Albariño Day—and its larger festival—play a pivotal role in promoting Galicia’s wine industry both nationally and internationally, highlighting the region’s maritime-influenced terroir and reinforcing Albariño’s status as Spain’s signature white varietal. The event’s designation as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest (since 1990) and its 2018 elevation to International Tourist Interest underscore its cultural and economic significance. Held annually in Cambados, Galicia, Albariño Day remains a vibrant tribute to wine, tradition, and community, affirming its place as one of Spain’s most beloved enological celebrations.

Flowers grown in the United States support the farmers, small businesses, jobs, and the economy.
