Bowdler's Day in the UK celebrates the life and achievements of Thomas Bowdler (July 11, 1754 - February 24, 1825). Bowdler was a physician and a philanthropist, best known for publishing "The Family Shakespeare," an abridged edition of William Shakespeare's work, edited by his sister, Henrietta Maria Bowdler. The editing was censored words and ideas deemed inappropriate for women and children at the time. "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and parts of the Old Testament of the Bible round out his notable works. Bowdler may be considered the original Cliff Notes, cheat sheets cherished by high school and college literature students!

Buddhist Lent marks the start of the Wan Khao Phansa, a period of three lunar months during which Buddhist monks return to their temples and sequester. It is a reenactment of the habits of The Buddha. He chose to stay closed in a temple during rainy seasons to preserve life by avoiding killing by stepping on an insect or a plant. Monks today spend this period studying, meditating, and teaching. They are allowed to briefly go outside the temple during the day and sleep in the same temple nightly. Banks close on the first day of Wan Khao Phansa in Buddhist countries, and alcohol is avoided.

Created seven years ago, this has become the biggest butterfly counting survey event in the UK, with more than 400,000 butterflies counted each year. Calgary Stampede (CA-AB): July 3-12

The Calgary Stampede is the world's largest annual rodeo, drawing over 1 million people annually and nicknamed "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth." The event's roots date back to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. Beginning in 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized a rodeo and festival called The Stampede. When he returned in 1919 following World War I, he organized the Victory Stampede in honor of soldiers returning from the war. The modern version of the Calgary Stampede began in 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. The 10-day event includes: Competitions including bull riding Barrel racing Steer wrestling Tie-down roping Winners receive significant prize money, and the ultimate winner receives the coveted Calgary Stampede Championship buckle, one of the highest awards on the rodeo circuit. In addition to the rodeo, the Calgary Stampede includes a large parade, midway rides and games, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon races, First Nations exhibitions, and various stage shows. An attendee highlight is the Stampede breakfasts held in neighborhoods throughout the city with free food and entertainment. On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act was enacted, creating the country of Canada within the British Empire and empowering it with full self-governing authority. Before this day, the Canadian territory was three different regions. The holiday was known as Dominion Day until 1982 when it changed to Constitution Day. 1982, Canada finally declared its independence from the British Crown and ratified its constitution. Today this compilation of historical events is known as Canada Day, a day equivalent to the 4th of July in the United States for the Canadians. However, Canadians did not need to fight a revolution to establish and enact their constitution. The monarch in the United Kingdom continues as their monarch. When Canada Day falls on a weekend, it is observed as a national holiday on the following Monday.
