Daylight Savings in Namibia commences on the 1st Sunday of September (Spring Forward) and ends on the 1st Sunday of April (Fall Back). On this day, we move the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM in September or one hour back in April at 2 AM on Sunday. The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895. Just in case you’ve concluded that the US Senate cannot agree on anything, on September 30, 2021, they did agree to designate September as National Democracy Month. It is a designation the American Democracy Month Council, a bipartisan group of former diplomats and politicians, has advocated for since 2017. The goal is to educate Americans about their government and increase appreciation for its unique status worldwide. Tools are available on the organization’s website. HISTORY Tracing its roots to ancient Greek democracy, the United States has evolved to become a leading democratic republic and a beacon of hope for many nations. This governance model has been replicated globally, yet, as reported by Freedom House, over a third of the world's population still lives in non-free states. The U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, bolstered by the Reconstruction Era amendments, safeguard American citizens' rights, emphasizing the significance of free and fair elections. However, maintaining democracy requires effort. Various leaders, including former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, have highlighted the importance of nurturing and protecting democratic values. Congressman John R. Lewis underscored that democracy is an ongoing act, while World War II starkly revealed democracy's vulnerabilities. Historical leaders, such as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, have voiced the significance of democracy and the education of the populace in upholding it. It was the first day of school, September 1, 2004, at Beslan School Number 1, an elementary school in the small town of Beslan (population 30,000), Russia.

At 9:20 AM, 32 Chechen terrorists attacked the school with guns, grenades, and bombs. The parents and students (approximately 1,200 people) were attending the annual first-day celebrations. Over the next three days, more than 334 people died, including 20% (186) of the school's children, most in the lower grades.

Beslan is the worst terrorist attack targeting children in modern history.

Better Breakfast Month: September

Better Breakfast Month coincides with back-to-school. Better Breakfast Month seeks to remind parents and children to eat breakfast if they want to do well at school or work. In a 2000 study of Boston Public School pilot breakfast programs, students who increased their breakfast participation rates increased their math grades, decreased their school absence and tardiness rate, and decreased emotional/behavioral problems. Nearly 60% of staff reported a positive change in student behavior and attentiveness. (Dr. Michael Murphy and Ronald Kleinman, Massachusetts General Hospital) According to a 2002 study conducted by Theresa Nicklas of Baylor College of Medicine, adolescents who eat breakfast are two to five times more likely than breakfast-skippers to consume at least two-thirds of the daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of calcium, magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, B6 and D. Nicklas found that the intake of other vitamins and minerals – including zinc and calcium – as well as of protein and carbohydrates, was much higher among those who ate breakfast. Also, fat consumption was lower. (Journal of Adolescent Health, Volume 27, Issue 5). Better Breakfast Month appears to be the inspiration of Delaunay Communication Inc. in Seattle, Washington.
