Seward's Folly, also known as the Alaska Purchase, refers to the U.S. government's acquisition of Alaska from Russia in 1867. The purchase was made under the presidency of Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward, who negotiated the deal with the Russian Minister to the United States, Eduard de Stoeckl. The purchase was initially met with widespread ridicule and criticism, with many people viewing it as a foolish and wasteful decision. At the time of the purchase, Alaska was largely considered a barren, remote territory with few resources of value. In fact, many people referred to it as "Seward's Icebox" or "Seward's Folly," a name that stuck due to the skepticism and criticism surrounding the deal. The purchase of Alaska, however, turned out to be a wise decision for the United States. The discovery of gold in the late 1800s and the development of the fishing industry in the early 1900s proved to be valuable resources. Today, Alaska is known for its oil, natural gas, timber, and fishing industries. It is also a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. In retrospect, the purchase of Alaska is viewed as a shrewd investment by the United States, as it secured the country's foothold in the Pacific Northwest and expanded its territory. The acquisition of Alaska also helped strengthen the United States' claim to the Pacific Northwest, which was being contested by the British at the time.

The International Day of Zero Waste is dedicated to promoting sustainable consumption and production practices and raising awareness about the contributions of zero-waste initiatives to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The waste sector is a significant contributor to the global environmental challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Each year, billions of tons of municipal solid waste and plastic waste enter ecosystems, while millions of tons of food are lost or wasted. Zero-waste initiatives can address these issues by promoting responsible waste management, minimizing waste generation, and preventing pollution. Adopting a zero-waste approach involves responsible production, consumption, and disposal in a closed, circular system. This includes designing products to be durable and using fewer resources, reducing pollution and waste throughout their life cycle. Consumers also play a crucial role by changing their habits, reusing and repairing products, and disposing of them properly. Achieving zero waste requires collective action at all levels. Governments, communities, industries, and stakeholders need to invest in waste management infrastructure, improve recovery systems, and support zero-waste initiatives through financing and policymaking. The Global Strategy for Sustainable Consumption and Production, established by the United Nations General Assembly, provides guidance for this transition by promoting sustainable consumption and production practices across all sectors by 2030.

Vietnam Veteran's Day (1973): March 29

March 29, 1973, is the anniversary of the day the last official US troops left Vietnam, eleven years after the beginning of the war—conflict. War was never officially declared. During those 11 years, over 58,000 Americans lost their life. Each name is commemorated in black marble at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. The Vietnam War forever changed American culture. It was the first prolonged conflict that was never won or lost and was hugely unpopular with the American public. It defined the 1960s, gave birth to the hippy movement, and ushered in the drug culture. It continues to plague many who lived through it on both sides, physically and psychologically. An estimated two million civilians and 1.1 million fighters for the Vietnamese also lost their lives. This day is set aside by Presidential Proclamation each year to honor the men and women who gave their lives during the Vietnam war.

BDS Global Day of Action (1976): March 30

BDS Global Day of Action is one day each year when activists shine a light on the necessity to end the occupation of Arab lands and apartheid policies placed on non-Jewish citizens by the nation-state of Israel. When this event began in 2009, it included a March to Jerusalem. Today the BDS Global Day of Action is acknowledged in over 100 countries by people of all faiths, including Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. BDS Global Day of Action coincides with Palestinian Land Day on March 30 each year. Land Day is the day in 1976 when Palestinians formerly protested the nation-state of Israel's confiscating of their land without compensation and by force, illegal under international law. This event stood out in 1976; Israeli forces killed six unarmed civilians marching against land confiscation and another 100 wounded. The BDS movement is a call for equal rights and justice and has nothing to do with the chosen national religion of the state or its people. All aspects of BDS will cease when the state of Israel: 1) Ends its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied by the state of Israel beginning in June 1967. 2) Dismantles its wall, now ten times longer than the Berlin Wall. 3) Recognizes all people's fundamental rights (with full equality) under its influence regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, or origin. 4) Respect, protect, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees seeking to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194. The BDS movement uses non-violent means to pressure the state of Israel into ending its apartheid, segregation, and racially applied policies within the state and its territories by withholding revenues and preventing the profiting from the occupation, denial of human rights, and violence through the following tactics: 1. Boycott products and companies (Israeli and international) that profit from violating Palestinian rights. Boycotting includes avoiding participation or support of Israeli sporting, cultural and academic events and institutions that facilitate or promote the occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied since June 1967. 2. Divesting from stocks, 401K, and pension funds that support companies facilitating or promoting the occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied since June 1967. 3. Sanctions are a diplomatic and economic tool that removes privilege and financial, military, and political support from the nation-state until it conforms with international law. The BDS National Committee administers BDS Global Day of Action. It includes NGOs, faith groups, activists, legal associations, educational alliances, unions, and human rights organizations. This day will continue each year until the occupation ends and all people in historic Palestine and the state of Israel have equal rights regardless of faith, origin, color, or race. ____________ Newsweek Magazine, in August 2018, produced a short film (4 1/2 minutes) explaining the origins of the 100-year battle between the Israelis and Palestinians and why it continues. Bipolar Day, World (1853): March 30

World Bipolar Day (WBD) is an initiative of the Asian Network of Bipolar Disorder (ANBD), the International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF), and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD). It is held annually on the birth date of Vincent Van Gogh (March 30, 1853). After his death, doctors believed he had bipolar disorder. World Bipolar Day brings awareness to bipolar disorders and seeks to eliminate social stigma by educating the global population about bipolar disorders and improving sensitivity towards the illness. This event first ran in 2014.
