Down Syndrome Week (UK): March 18-24

06:20 AM | -
Beginning with the third Monday of March, the United Kingdom observes National Down Syndrome Week. It aims to raise awareness about the nature of Down Syndrome and encourage people and society to treat persons with it as human beings rather than disabled. Down Syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been part of the human condition and exists everywhere in the world. Today people with Down Syndrome can be found throughout society, including in high-profile careers like acting and film. This week celebrates the possibilities rather than limitations of life with Down Syndrome and seeks to educate the public about what it is and is not.

Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW), Ntl.: March 18-24 (est)

06:20 AM | -
National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® links students with scientists and other experts to counteract the myths about drugs and alcohol teens get from the internet, social media, TV, movies, music, or friends. It was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug use and addiction. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism became a partner in 2016 when alcohol was to the week. NIDA and NIAAA are part of the National Institutes of Health.

Fertility Day, Goddess of: March 18

06:20 AM | -
Goddess of Fertility Day traditionally celebrates Aphrodite and other gods and goddesses of fertility. The ancient Greek goddess, Aphrodite, is perhaps the most well-known goddess of fertility. In ancient Egypt, this was goddess Isis, and people called her Venus in ancient Rome. People would pray and make offerings to the goddess of fertility, seeking to create a family. Today, those of the Hindu faith pray to Parvati (Uma), seeking help with love and fertility. Whether you practice faith with gods and goddesses, or you’re just looking for an excuse to practice your pro-creation skills. The Goddess of Fertility Day is celebrated a few days before the Spring Equinox.

Johnny Appleseed Day (1845): March 18*

06:20 AM | -
Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds for lodging, old clothing, and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22. Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims. Both settlers and Native Americans respected Appleseed. He spoke several languages, protected the environment, and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants. The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.

LegalWeek (US-NY): January 29 - February 1

06:20 AM | -
Legalweek New York is a trade show symposium focusing on the legal profession's needs. Each year over 8,000 people attend. The week features workshops, boot camps, case studies, TED-style talks, panel sessions, networking events, and hundreds of exhibitors.

PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Lent, Orthodox (C): March 18 - May 1

06:20 AM | -
The Christian season of Lent is a religious observance that begins 40 days (the days Jesus fasted in the desert and resisted temptation by the devil) on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Maundy Thursday. The purpose of Lent is to prepare for the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abram and the new covenant created with mankind through Jesus Christ. It is a season observed by all Christians, though more stringently in the Catholic and Orthodox faiths. Traditionally there is prayer, penance, and atonement leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is customary to fast during Lent. Fasting can be food or giving up something else of pleasure, such as drinking or smoking, and other temptations like sweets or meat.

Happy Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day. There are two standards for oatmeal cookies: the thick round cookies and the thin Florentine wafers known as Lacy Oatmeal Cookies. These crispy wafers are often seen in ice cream parlors decorating a sundae. However, they're good if you need to nip a craving. Oatmeal entered the American diet in the early nineteenth century. Cookies or "oat cakes" quickly followed.

06:20 AM | -
Global Recycling Day was launched in 2018 to recognize and celebrate the natural resources of our planet and the necessity of giving each a new life. The day's mission is two-fold: 1) To tell world leaders that recycling is too important not to be a global issue and that a joined-up approach to recycling is urgently needed. 2) To ask people across the planet to think of resources, not waste when it comes to the goods around us. We will only award recycled goods their actual value and repurpose them as they deserve once this happens.
