Wife-carrying originated in the United Kingdom over twelve centuries ago; on June 8, 793 AD, Viking raiders rampaged into Lindisfarne on the northeast coast of England, destroying the monastery and reportedly carrying off the local women who were forced to become wives and slaves. Such "wife-carrying" continued intermittently for around 300 years. Wife carrying, this time as a sport rather than spoils, was re-introduced to Britain in 2008 after an absence of nearly 900 years. The modern sport started in Finland, with the first Wife Carrying Championships held in 1991. In 1999, the United States added similar games.
