Mars Month celebrates the month's namesake, the Roman god of war, Mars. In early Roman history, he was a god of spring, growth in nature, fertility, and the protector of cattle. Mars is a chthonic god (earth god), which could explain why he became a god of death and war. He is the son of Jupiter and Juno and the father of Romulus and Remus by the Vestal Ilia (Rhea Silvia). Because he was the father of these legendary founders of Rome and thus of the Roman people, the Romans styled themselves 'sons of Mars.'

March is National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®). Throughout the month, music education becomes the focus of schools nationwide. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973 and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month-long celebration of school music. MIOSM aims to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children.

Mustache March: March

Mustache March is a cultural movement and fundraiser for a variety of causes. Men grow mustaches for March and collect charitable donations for the MACC Fund. The MACC Fund, Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, is a charitable organization formed in 1976 to support research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer. www.maccfund.org Mustaches can be politically charged. They've been banned by kings, forbidden by employers, and used as a form of protest. The popularity of mustaches has ebbed and waned throughout the ages, and in America today, we find ourselves at a low point of mustache acceptance. What better way to start a cultural movement than to embrace an unpopular social practice to raise money for charity? The Follicle Freedom Foundation was born of this idea. The goal is threefold. Revive a once-glorious grooming practice, humiliate ourselves, and raise cash for a worthy cause.

Noodle Month, Ntl.: March

National Noodle Month celebrates the wheat-based (or rice at times) long squiggly food we call noodles. Noodles differ from pasta in that they're made from milled wheat flour; pasta is made from durum semolina, which is coarser. Noodles are mixed, flattened, rolled, and cut. Pasta dough is passed through a mold or die, which is why it can come in various shapes, sizes, and textures. Noodles, however, are always long and either tubular or flat. Pasta is usually purchased dry (or fresh in gourmet shops) and boiled or baked. Perfectly cooked pasta is soft on the outside but firm on the inside. The Italian term for this is "Al Dente." Pasta tends to hold onto sauces much better than noodles. Noodles are usually purchased fresh and baked, fried, stir-fried, boiled, or steamed, and can be eaten raw. National Noodle Month is an unofficial event. The National Pasta Association sponsors National Pasta Month in October.

Nutrition Month, Ntl.: March

National Nutrition Month is an opportunity to get educated about the fuel that feeds you. The first National Nutrition Week campaign launched in 1973 with a presidential proclamation, TV and radio public service announcements, news releases, and bumper stickers, all featuring the theme “Invest in Yourself—Buy Nutrition.” From the beginning, American Dietetic Association (ADA) members enthusiastically embraced National Nutrition Week as an opportunity to promote the profession and serve as a vehicle for delivering nutrition education messages to the public. Armed with a promotion kit produced in year two, dietetics professionals began planning special events in schools, healthcare facilities, and community centers. Radio announcements and news releases gained the attention of the media.

Omizutori Water Drawing Festival (JP): March 1-14

This Buddhist Festival in Japan occurs each year between March 1 and 14, culminating with water drawing at the Todaiji Temple. Each night, believers carry giant torches to the balcony of Nigatsudo and shower onlookers in embers. This shower is believed to ensure all those below experience a safe year. In addition to the torches, on the 12th and 13th, priests draw water from a well that flows once a year and distribute this water. The waters are believed to restore health to the sick and afflicted. The spectacle is accompanied by horns and bells and goes into the early hours of the morning. Omizutori Water Drawing Festival is one of Japan's most popular Buddhist festivals.

National Optimism Month occurs in March each year. Its purpose is to encourage people to look at their life and see the glass half-full. Optimists tend to have greater prosperity and happiness than people who look at the negative side of life. Optimism in the face of adversity often serves as the best medicine. This observance month originated with a husband and wife relationship expert team and authors, Dr. Michael and Mary Ann Mercer.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month (UK): March

Ovarian Cancer Action of the United Kingdom hosts Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month each March. The goal is to reach women in the UK with the tools and knowledge each needs to know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Currently, only 20 percent of women in the UK can name the symptoms of ovarian cancer. These are: Persistent stomach pain Persistent bloating Difficulty eating/feeling full more quickly Needing to urinate more frequently The campaign also seeks to promote early diagnosis of cancer. If caught in the early stages of ovarian cancer, a woman has a 90 percent chance of surviving for more than five years, but this reduces to 22 percent when diagnosed in the later stages. The month also encourages women to explore their family history of ovarian cancer and discover if they’re at risk. Women who inherit a faulty gene known as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have a 35-60 percent of developing ovarian cancer.

Paws to Read Month: March

Focusing on therapy dogs and cats and the benefits children (and the animals) receive when children read aloud to them. Studies show a child's confidence, comprehension, concentration, and reading level significantly improve with regular reading to animals. Paws to Read Month is designed to raise awareness of animal/children reading programs and help more communities create them. This event first ran in 2016.

Peanut Butter Lover's Day, Ntl.: March 1*

Peanut butter has existed since 1890 when a Saint Louis physician developed the idea of packaging peanut paste for people with bad teeth; peanut paste was sold for six cents per pound. Today it is a regular staple in school lunches and prisons.

The peanut industries recognize National Peanut Month throughout the US. The Texas Peanut Producers have created a tiny Peanut IQ for the event.
