Wellcat Herbs has created a unique niche for itself by inventing crazy holidays, and this is one. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was once the home office of the David Letterman show. The logic goes if one media icon could make Amish country home, why not the rest of Hollywood or Broadway? There was a 2010 Indy film called Lebanon, PA. Though the film was titled for the city, it was filmed elsewhere in Pennsylvania. It hardly seems fair!

Shattila Ekadashi (H): February 5-6

Ekadashi is a Hindu observance that can fall into two categories: annually and monthly. Sattila or Tilda Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the waning moon (Krishan Paksha) during the fortnight of the Hindu month of Magha. Devotees consider it highly auspicious to bathe in the water mixed with sesame seeds on this day and to offer donations to the needy. The State of the Union Address is an annual speech delivered by the President of the United States to a joint session of Congress, typically held in January or February. The speech is an opportunity for the President to report on the state of the country, outline their legislative agenda for the upcoming year, and discuss other important issues facing the nation. The origins of the State of the Union Address can be traced back to the US Constitution, which requires the President to "from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." However, it was not until 1790 that George Washington delivered the first speech called the "State of the Union Address." At that time, it was not yet an annual event. The annual State of the Union Address tradition began in the 20th century, with Woodrow Wilson delivering the first in 1913. Since then, the speech has been an essential part of the political calendar, with the President setting their priorities and agenda for the coming year. The speech is an opportunity for the President to communicate directly with the American people, as it is broadcast live on television and radio. In recent years, the State of the Union Address has often been highly anticipated, with political supporters and opponents of the President paying close attention to what is said. The speech has also become a venue for political theater, with members of Congress often using the occasion to make political statements or show support or opposition to the President's agenda.

John Jeffries was born on February 5, 1744. He is considered America's first Weatherman (meteorologist). Jeffries began logging daily weather occurrences in Boston and providing reports to the population. In 1784, he made the first weather analysis using a balloon. National Weatherman's Day is observed on February 5 as a reminder of Jeffries' contributions and in recognition of the work done by today's meteorologists in monitoring climate forecasts, providing warnings of significant weather issues, and helping to keep people safe the world over.

Originally called Frogurt, HP Hood invented frozen yogurt in 1970. With the health food craze of the 1970s, it quickly gained popularity as an alternative to ice cream. In the 1980s, seizing upon the demand and opportunity, the TCBY chain of frozen yogurt stores opened. By 1986, frozen yogurt had become a 25 million-dollar-a-year industry, and in 2019 it became a 2.1 billion-dollar industry. Frozen Yogurt Day celebrates this dessert treat. Many retailers and restaurants will offer free samples on this day.

Lame Duck Day (1933): February 6

Lame Duck Day marks the anniversary of the 20th amendment to the US Constitution: 20TH AMENDMENT "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on January 20, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on January 3, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; the terms of their successors shall then begin." Lame Duck refers to the period when an elected official nears the end of his tenure after a successor is elected. Inauguration Day occurred on March 4 through 1932. Congress usually had two sessions, the second of which was traditionally held from December until March. The session was commonly called the "lame duck session." The 20th amendment moved the beginning of the new Congressional year to January 3 and the president's inauguration to January 20, thus shortening the lame-duck period from four months to two months.

Ronald Reagan Day celebrates the birthday of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States. Mr. Reagan served from January 20, 1981 – January 20, 1989. He was born in 1911 in Tampico, IL, and died June 5, 2004, in Los Angeles, California. Prior to becoming President of the United States, Reagan was a movie star and the Governor of California. Today his legacy is kept alive by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library. The 41st President, George H. W. Bush, was his Vice President for both terms in office.

Turkey's Twin Terror Earthquakes (TR/SY)(2023): February 6

On February 6, 2023, twin earthquakes, one at Gaziantep (7.8 magnitude) at 4 AM local time and the second eight hours later centered in Kahramanmarhas, Turkey (7.5 magnitude), rocked the region, destroying over 16,000 buildings and killing at least 5,000 people within the first 24 hours. The twin terror tremors represent the most significant quakes in Turkey since 1939's Erzincan earthquake, which killed 33,000 people. Structural damage and casualties remain concentrated in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria. Freezing overnight temperatures and hundreds of aftershocks continue to thwart rescue efforts, leaving thousands of people buried in the rubble and existing structures unsafe in both nations. Syria's ongoing war and sanctions against the government have made getting aid and rescue into that country difficult, despite over 50 nations sending rescue teams, assistance, and supplies. Turkey's leadership has declared a 90-day state of emergency. The ultimate death and casualty toll is expected to reach tens of thousands. Syria's leadership has yet to do so and has thus far refused most foreign aid. LEEP Calendar wrote this entry on February 7, 2023, as the story continues to develop.
