Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (US-NY): May 11-14

Founded in 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club held its first dog show in New York City at Gilmore's Garden (now Madison Square Garden). Present were 1,201 dogs. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is considered the most prestigious of all canine shows, with the two-day event televised worldwide. Check your local television listings for air times.

Fettuccini Alfredo Day: February 7

Alfredo Di Lelio owned a small restaurant in Rome in 1914. After his first son's birth, his wife Ines found it challenging to eat, and to help her, he created a dish of noodles, cheese, and butter. Isra'a Wal Mi'raj (M)(621 AD): February 7/8

According to Islam, Isra and Mi'raj are the two parts of the Night Journey, which the prophet Mohammad undertook during a single night in the year 621 AD. The Qu'ran states he traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem, then to heaven, and back to Mecca in one night. Marking this journey by Mohammad is one of the most important events in the Islamic Calendar. On Isra and Mi'raj, Muslims believe the prophet traveled from Mecca to the farthest mosque on earth, where he led other prophets (including Jesus Christ, Abraham, Moses, and others) in prayer. He then ascended into heaven to speak with God, where He revealed to Mohammed additional revelations, including the proper way to pray, when to pray and how often to pray—the ritual observant Muslims follow five times a day facing Mecca. The mosque he traveled to is marked today by Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, also known as the Dome of the Rock. Muslims believe it was from this point that the prophet Mohammed was lifted into heaven to speak with God. Islamic scholars argue whether this was a physical or spiritual journey. Whether his soul or person, it is believed he rode a stallion named Buraq to meet God. The prophet Mohammed died ten years later in 632 AD. PLEASE NOTE: Islamic holidays are determined in Mecca by the moon's position and can occur a day earlier or later than posted.

Preparation for Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, traditionally involved removing from one’s kitchen of rich and dairy-based foods like milk, butter, and eggs. Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) and Pancake Week evolved from this tradition. Pancakes are made with butter, milk, eggs, and flour, so using the ingredients is better than throwing them out. Pancake Week occurs during the seven days leading up to the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday, and runs concurrently with Carnaval and Mardi Gras. It is an entire week in the United States, and in the Commonwealth countries, it is the day before Ash Wednesday.

Periodic Table Day (1863): February 7

Periodic Table Day marks the anniversary of publishing the first table of elements by English chemist John Newlands on February 7, 1863. His is distinctive because he was the first to categorize elements based on atomic mass. Newlands' however, was different from what we're familiar with today. Russian Dmitri Mendeleev created the format in 1869. He is the man who organized the tables in columns and rows based on their atomic weight and the occasions of repetition of base elements. Like most science, the periodic table is an international affair. To reach the point of Newlands and Mendeleev, contributions from the French (1789, 1857, 1862) and Germans (1829, 1843) would add to the final product of an Englishman and a Russian.
